American screenwriter, actress and contemporary artist Miranda Julai has launched a new art project “We Think Alone”. As part of this virtual performance, Julai sends everyone a personal correspondence of his equally famous colleagues, including the author of the Girls series Lena Dunham, actress Kirsten Dunst and basketball player Karim Abdul-Jabbar. To receive such a letter of happiness, you need to leave a request on the We Think Alone website by typing your email address into the appropriate field.
Mailings take place on Mondays and will last until November 11. All the letters from the participants were written by them long before the start of the project and relate to a variety of topics, from messages for mothers to angry tirades. Compilations from letters of all project participants, grouped according to thematic criteria, will be sent to the mailing address of subscribers. So, last Monday, Julai sent a selection of messages about money. It included an original letter from Lena Dunham, originally addressed to an assistant, in which the screenwriter was horrified by the high cost of the $ 24,000 sofa.
The “We Think Alone” project is part of the large-scale exhibition “On the Tip of My Tongue” by the Stockholm gallery Magasin 3. As Miranda Julai commented on the experiment: “I thought I knew all my friends very well, but this is not so. And this project helped me to realize this. Our personal life has nothing to do with how we behave, hiding behind a monitor screen. The same communication via e-mail has changed dramatically over the past few years, we no longer write such long letters as we did in the early 2000s. And in the next ten years, we may stop using email altogether.”
