"Cold Front" is a hermetic drama played out for three, which sometimes pretends to be a mystical thriller about people who have not found a place for themselves in life. The ideal couple, Sasha and Ilya (Dasha Charusha * and Alexander Molochnikov), got stuck in their personal hell, which until a certain point looked more like heaven: the house of friends in the north of France, morning jogging along the surf line, wilderness and quiet, “after lunch I will start writing book ". A certain time comes when Sasha's former classmate, Masha, suddenly appears on the doorstep - she is played by Svetlana Ustinova.

The film is still at the post-production stage, that is, all the key moments and the picture will not change, but some scenes may still appear, and some disappear. In addition, they will complete the sound and details that we would never have noticed, but the authors from them are twisted into a ram's horn. Intermediate options and excerpts are shown to focus groups, I get into one of the last.

There is a scene in the film where Sasha tells how she wakes up at night and howls at how ideal the man lying next to her is - despite the fact that she obviously sees and even hates all his flaws. I begin to realize that the film does the same to me: I think about it for three days in a row and I seem to fall in love. I make an appointment with Dasha and Sveta, who invented and forced all this; Roman Volobuev warns me that it is very difficult for Sveta to talk, "but Dasha is the same as in the film." This does not bode well: the imagination paints a nervously smoking silent blonde and a pretentious brunette in a red dress and leather jacket. Everything turns out to be completely different.

Good artists

and there are more good artists than good roles

Sveta and Dasha, without saying a word, come to the interview in T-shirts from the movie: Dasha in gray with the inscription “Don’t Worry Be Jewish”, Sveta - in white with “All Good Things Are Wild And Free”. I want to, but I forget to ask if they got them after filming or if the girls were in theirs. In any case, art immediately begins to intertwine with reality. “It is impossible to release the film, there is always some amazing inner work on it,” says Sveta. She generally says more at first, but within ten minutes after the start of the interview, both finish each other's sentences and intercept questions if someone took a sip of coffee at the wrong time. I think that when deciphering their speech, it is quite possible to take it for a monologue of one person.

They say that they met nine years ago on the set and have been friends since then - less before, recently very close. They were united by a common sense of unfulfillment, which haunts many in Russian cinema and television - actors, screenwriters and directors alike. “Sveta was more fortunate, because several directors with a capital letter met on her way,” says Dasha. - Looking back, I realized that I do not have a single piece that I could show to my parents or children. Say, look, your mom, grandmother, girlfriend or daughter is an actress.You wonder why you are doing this at all, if you can just make money, travel around the world and do yoga? I got this feeling, plus Naishuller (Dasha's husband, director and clip maker Ilya Naishuller. - Ed.) Launched his project, and it became clear that the starting point was here and now, that I made a decision to do something. And Sveta was at the same point. " Sveta adds that it's much easier to do things together, especially if you are thinking in unison.

I ask if the Russian film industry pushed them to the decision to do something of their own, where it is generally difficult with powerful dramatic roles, not only for women. At first the girls object, but then they agree: “There are more good artists and good actors than good roles, it's true. There is very little material. Therefore, perhaps, we set about such a responsible business as the creation of our own material. As a result, we were not the only ones who realized: we have a lot of debuts in our project. And we managed to express what we wanted to say, and Roma wrote the script and made a film that he had for a long time in his head - about France, about people who are lost somewhere and are trying to find a way out of their inner impasse. Our cameraman Misha Khasaya made his film debut, before that he shot clips and commercials. Ilya Stewart, Misha Finogenov produced a full-length film for the first time. It turns out that everyone with this project has entered some kind of new life."

Using Volobuev's metaphor, I ask if it was scary to jump into the water with a team, where no one can swim. Sveta says that it happened, although they considered, for example, experienced operators: “When you are doing your young project, it is very inspiring that serious eminent people are interested, trying to clean up their schedule in order to do it. So they like the script and our approach. " Mikhail Khasaya was not the first, but, as it turned out, the ideal candidate: even from the teaser, you can see how strong camera work it is.

“Misha was a complete discovery for me,” Sveta says. - It was so that we were sitting, waiting, then suddenly Misha explodes, says: “We are running!” The whole group rises, with suitcases, with coffee, it doesn't matter. We all knew that we needed to run after Misha, because now is the very moment when we need to shoot. Or: "That's it, we are not filming." In general, on the site there was tremendous trust in each other and the understanding that everyone knows what he is doing. To the best of their experience, not necessarily professional, everyone took on a new responsibility. Life always starts outside your comfort zone. And we went beyond it to do something new - first of all for ourselves."

Roman Volobuev wrote the script for the film based on the idea of ​​Dasha and Sveta, with which they came to him about a year ago. I was going to talk to them as the initiators of the project and actresses, but I very quickly understand that no one here is limited to one role, in the best traditions of independent cinema. Both girls are also listed as screenwriters and co-producers of the film, and Dasha, who has a musical project Charusha, also wrote a soundtrack to it: “Usually I sit down and think - so, I need to write a track now. You sit and think for a day or two, and then you decide - let me start. Because if you go around and wait for it to come together, then you will never write anything."

Both Dasha and Sveta talk a lot about how important it is to kick yourself in the ass and get down to business, and not promise to start a new life tomorrow. Deciding to act consistently, they met every day at ten in the morning for a month and worked until three: they painted the characters, came up with their motivation, and built schemes of their relationship. The result of this work was one page of a thoroughly thought out script application. “We really worked, brainstormed, we were broken and twisted, and not that the portal opened and descended on us,” laughs Dasha, and shows her favorite motivator on Instagram: “Don't wait for a muse, start without her.”

In pursuit, she tells an anecdote about a drowning Jew: “My husband's surname is Naishuller, I can have no anti-Semitism. The Jew drowns and prays to God to save him. A boat arrives and they shout to him - kamon, guy, come here. He answers - no, no, God will save me. Then another boat sails, then a steamer, then a helicopter arrives, but it refuses to everyone and eventually sinks. And so he sits in paradise and says - I prayed, prayed, why didn't you save me. And God tells him - I sent you so many things! And the boat, and the third, and the fourth, and the fifth, and the steamer, and the helicopter. " Dasha adds that when everyone around is doing something, and you are not, then there are only two options, as she explains, "depending on moral fulfillment": to seek excuses for oneself and suffer or envy.

In the film, the main characters flee from Moscow on a sabbatical, because here "it is impossible to do anything." “When you are looking for excuses for yourself, this is usually the very first thing. But if you try to escape from something, then everything bothers you, you will feel uncomfortable everywhere,”Sveta explains. We are pondering why many Russian independent films still take place outside Moscow: at Khomerika in Vladivostok, at Popogrebsky in Chukotka, at Zvyagintsev in Teriberka. I suppose that this generation has not yet comprehended either the capital, or how to shoot it. Dasha says that a person who will open Moscow in terms of cinematography will take a huge step, but she also explains this with prosaic reasons: “There is a problem with light in Moscow: the angle at which the sun's rays fall here creates a very strange reality. A beautiful picture without other light sources can be obtained only twice a year - in May and late September. In the summer everything will be flat, but the winter is absolutely terrible here."

Sveta adds that the decision to shoot in Normandy was dictated not so much by the beauty of the landscape as by the very idea of ​​the film: “We wanted to take the Russian guys into a completely different reality, so at first we had Hong Kong in mind, and then the English coast. Why did Lost in Translation work like that? Because two people, in fact, are in a very busy city, but this is a foreign city, a foreign culture, they are alone there. We thought a lot about what kind of place we would have, up to mystical interpretations: that the heroes were stuck in some kind of intertime. And now they have been given a chance: either they will take a step forward, or they will remain there forever."

I share the impression that the enclosure of space in the film (despite the fact that it is formally open - desert hills and the sea recede into the horizon) reminded me of Bela Tarr's "Turin Horse". There, a couple of farmers are also unable to break out of the outskirts while the apocalypse looms: there seems to be no peace outside of it at all. Sveta and Dasha unanimously confirm that this is exactly the feeling they wanted to achieve.

“It's a metaphor. A person must give up consumption and think about what fills him. If you do not evolve morally, if you are a black hole that devours everything, then in the end there will be nothing left of you. Ilya and Sasha are stillborn and sterile, they are consumers. They are chasing to seem like someone, not to be: he is a writer, she is a modern artist. The only person who still has hope is Masha, but she bet on the wrong and hopes that, having returned the past, she will be reborn like a phoenix. There can be no rebirth from the outside, it is possible only from the inside,”says Dasha.

This is a story about a collision of two strong girls who could not understand each other

It amazes me how skeptical she is of her heroine, whose archetypal image of a gorgeous femme fatale actually seriously impresses many - both men and women. If you wish, you can also see an autosatire in this.Wasn't it hard to play? Dasha says that no, the role was given to her simply, besides, she carried it for a long time: "Yes, because of my voice or manner of speaking, many people think that I am such a pretentious, unpleasant and superficial chick." Sveta, by her own admission, was given the role by pain and blood - Masha is indeed the most complex and uneven character in the film: “Dasha's heroine is from herself, she has everything out, everything gushes into the air. And mine - into myself. I had few words, so everything was cooked inside. There are psychological trainings - if you feel bad, go get it. And Masha, instead of throwing herself out, began to destroy."

The girls say that they did not invent heroines for themselves and were not even always sure who exactly would play whom. Sveta immediately stipulates that the only autobiographical moment in the film is the scene with the lobster (which is better not to be spoiled). Although the film, like any triangle, can be viewed from one of three sides, for the girls it is definitely about the relationship of their heroines: "In fact, this is a story about the collision of two girls so strong that because of this they could not understand each other." In front of me are two strong girls who could do it.

They confirm that they want to continue working together. “We are now thinking of making a short film, and I want Dasha to be the stage director,” Sveta says. “She already has directing experience: she invented and directed her own video”. Dasha, in turn, says that her ambitions are not so much to shoot something, but to show Sveta as she sees her: “She is just a fantastic woman and a fantastically beautiful image. And it seems to me that from the point of view of femininity, which is given to her by nature, he is not yet sufficiently revealed. " Will it be a drama? The girls say that they want to make a genre movie, and they laugh that the idea of ​​the script already exists. “When we were working on Cold Front, we had a general chat on Facebook, where we discussed everything. And we always think that we can make another movie out of this chat. Only, unlike what we filmed, it would be a comedy. But she would not be inferior to the Cold Front in terms of the intensity of passions."
