Cleansing is one of the most traumatic daily procedures for the skin. but it is necessary to get rid of makeup, dust, sebum and sunscreen residues that accumulate on the face during the day. Smart cleansing also allows caring tonics, serums and creams to be absorbed better and act more effectively.
In recent years, the Asian two-step system has become especially popular, consisting of a hydrophilic oil for removing makeup and a foam for subsequent additional cleansing of the skin. Cosmetologists and skin care specialists advise adhering to this method of cleansing to keep the skin in good condition: in an amicable way, to the immutable rule "never go to bed wearing makeup" should be added one more thing - "always cleanse the skin in two passes." Another thing is that you can use a variety of cleansers - here it is worth focusing on the type and condition of the skin.
In the heat, the desire and need to cleanse not only the body, but also the face, often turns into mania - you want to wash yourself every couple of hours. If only for this reason, it makes sense to use as gentle means as possible. Excessive cleansing and the use of aggressive gels and foams on any skin, even oily and problematic, leads to dehydration, peeling and inflammation. We will tell you how to choose the means for each of the stages of cleansing and which proven oils, foams, balms and lotions you should take a closer look at.
As the first stage of cleansing, in order to wash off mascara or lipstick, it is convenient to use either micellar water or two-phase products. Their task is to dissolve and remove dirt and cosmetics on the face without irritating the delicate skin around the eyes and lips. Two-phase products usually contain oil as a solvent component and therefore additionally care for the skin without letting it dry out. The oil can leave an unpleasant film, but this problem is easily solved by the next step of cleaning.
An alternative to two-phase products is micellar water, which is essentially a weak solution of surfactants. Chemist Michelle Wong explains in detail and very interesting how micelles manage to remove cosmetics and dirt from the surface of the skin so effectively in his Lab Muffin blog. There you will also find the answer to the most popular question about micellar - whether it should be washed off with water. It is important to clarify: despite its wonderful properties, micellar water is not able to completely remove all impurities from the skin, especially if you love and wear thick makeup. Caroline Hirons even recommends using it exclusively as a means for the first stage of cleansing.
MAC Makeup Remover Wipes
A convenient express tool that you can use on the go and take with you on trips. The wipes are generously saturated with liquid, quickly wash away persistent cosmetics and do not irritate the skin.
Garnier Micellar Water
for all skin types
Makeup artist's must-have is a micellar water for removing make-up, which can also be used for washing. It is important to remember to rinse it off the face, as micelles can cause irritation if left on the skin for a long time.
Maybelline Expert Eyes Biphasic
One of the many products of this format, designed to remove eye makeup, but it can be used all over the face. When washing off the mascara, we advise you not to rub your eyes, but to attach a cotton pad with the product and wait a little - the cosmetics will wash off by itself.
A product that came to us from Asia is an oil (or oil-based product), which, in contact with water, turns into an emulsion and is easily washed off without additional effort. These oils are now produced by a large number of non-Asian brands. They are great both as the first stage of cleansing for removing makeup, and as the second - for complete cleansing of the skin and preparation for the application of care products.Apply hydrophilic oils to dry skin with dry hands, actively massage and rinse with either warm water or with napkins or sponges. The Asian cleansing system involves the use of a foaming agent after a hydrophilic one, but here you need to focus more on your own comfort and choose the options that are right for you.
The Face Shop Rice Water Bright Cleansing Oil
A Korean hydrophilic oil that dissolves even stubborn makeup and does not leave an oil film on the face after rinsing - Asian oils often sin with the latter.
The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil
Hydrophilic make-up remover with chamomile based on sunflower oil with a pleasant scent. In this series, The Body Shop also has a cleansing solid balm.
L'Occitane Shea Butter
Cleansing Oil 5%
Shea butter is one of the most nutritious, but at the same time the heaviest components of cosmetics. This L'Occitane oil dissolves makeup, nourishes the skin and washes out easily.
Cleansing gels and foams
Soap products cleanse the skin by breaking down fat and helping it dissolve in water. From what kind of surfactant is contained in this or that means for washing, its aggressiveness towards the skin depends. One of the most common surfactants that effectively breaks down fat is sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS, and its analogues. Numerous studies have proven that SLS irritates and dries out the skin, as it not only breaks down dirt, but also breaks down the skin's natural lipid layer, which is necessary to retain moisture. However, there are now a large number of products on the market with milder active ingredients. However, we do not recommend using foaming products on dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin, as they can aggravate the condition.
Mizon Egg White Bubble Cleanser
A product for those who like a lot of foam, but want a gentle cleansing. Contains mild cleansing ingredients and therefore will not wash off cosmetics, but is perfect for the second stage of washing.
La Roche-Posay Cleansing Micellar Foaming Water
Micellar foam free from soap, alcohol and dyes. Suitable for cleansing even sensitive skin. It will definitely not cope with the removal of persistent make-up, but for the morning wash it is the very thing.
Clinique Liquid Facial Soap Extra Mild
Among Clinique's cleansers, this is the only one that does not contain soap. It practically does not foam, but at the same time it cleans and refreshes the skin well, and also removes light makeup.
Rich balms and oils are a luxury from the world of cleansing, because they not only remove impurities, but also soothe, nourish the skin, and can also be used to massage the face. Care professionals recommend using these products especially for dry, tired and mature skin, and in winter for all skin types.
Oily products cleanse the skin thanks to the well-known chemical principle "like dissolves in like": sebum, dirt and makeup are easily dissolved in the oily base and are removed from the face without leaving any residue. As a rule, balms and oils are difficult to rinse off the face with just water, therefore, cleansing wipes or sponges are often sold along with them. A small life hack: for cleansing, you can use not only special cleansing balms, but also ordinary multifunctional ones.
Lush Ultrabland Facial Cleanser
One of the most inexpensive balsams with a dense texture. Softens skin, brightens and soothes. Contains honey, so it is better for allergy sufferers to pass by.
Darphin Aromatic Cleansing Balm with Rosewood
Cleansing balm for all skin types with marula oil, essential oils of rosewood, ylang-ylang and sage, vitamins C and E. Despite its small volume, it is guaranteed to last for more than one month of daily use.
REN Rosa Centifolia No. 1 Purity Cleansing Balm
Balm with a strong rose scent makes the skin soft and smoothes fine wrinkles from dryness.
Cleansing Creams, lotions and milk
Cleansing creams and lotions also typically contain oils to help dissolve dirt on the skin. They also contain many ingredients (such as clay, hyaluronic acid, and herbal extracts) to help fight dry, oily or dehydrated skin. They do not contain sulfates and therefore do not dry at all, but some may contain alcohol or ingredients that cause allergies. Remember - the denser the texture of the product, the more it is suitable for dry and sensitive skin. Another life hack: if you have an unsuitable face cream, then it can be used as a cleanser paired with a sponge, cotton pads, or a napkin.
Natura Siberica Facial Cleansing Fluid
A simple and straightforward everyday cleanser that will suit all skin types. The brand also has options for oily and dry skin.
Weleda Mandel Reinigungsmilch
Cleansing milk for sensitive skin with a rather bright almond scent. Despite the presence of a water-alcoholic infusion of flowers in the composition, it does not irritate the skin at all and removes impurities well.
REN ClearCalm 3 Clarifying
Unfortunately, there are very few gentle yet effective cleansers on the market for oily and problem skin. This milk contains clay and cleans the pores well, but does not dry out, so it can be used by owners of even dry skin types in the summer.
