The results of the 69th International Film Festival in Locarno have become known: the main prize, the Golden Leopard, was awarded to the film Atheist, the debut film by the Bulgarian Ralitsa Petrova. The best actress of the festival was Irena Ivanova, who played the main role in the Bulgarian film - a social worker selling passports of her dying wards.
The jury's second-ranked special prize went to Radu Jude for the film Tormented Hearts. Portuguese João Pedro Rodrigues was named the best director for his film "Ornithologist". Andrzej Severin was named Best Actor for his work on The Last Family. Italian Tizza Covey and Austrian Rainer Frimmel received special mentions for the film "Mr. Universe".
The Audience Award went to Ken Loach's I, Daniel Blake, which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
The festival was held in Switzerland from 3 to 13 August, 279 films were shown as part of the show. 17 films competed for the main prize of the main international competition program, eight of them were shot by women directors. This year's jury was chaired by Mexican director Arturo Ripstein.
