Scientists from the 3D visualization laboratory at the Australian University of New South Wales (UNSW) have created a large three-dimensional model of a cancer cell in virtual reality: wearing VR glasses, you can get inside the cell, bypass the nucleus and see other parts of it. The head of the research group, John McGee, believes that such imaging can be used by scientists studying how drugs enter and act inside cancer cells.

The model was created based on data obtained with an electron microscope at the University of Queensland. When working with virtual reality, the specialists used the Unity video game development platform. Scientists can not only observe what is happening inside the cell, but also control the process using a controller.

Another McGhee project involves the creation of a 3D image of the arteries of patients with a heart attack or stroke, based on MRI data: this initiative is being developed in conjunction with St. Vincent's Hospital in Sydney. With the help of three-dimensional models, doctors can visually show patients what exactly happened to them, and explain how the treatment will proceed. McGee sees great educational potential in 3D models of cells or organs in virtual reality: using this technology, it is possible to visually explain to people without medical education the phenomena that occur in their bodies, and motivate them to comply with the doctor's prescriptions.
