THE WEEKEND IS HARDEST TO SOLVE TWO KEY THINGS: what to cook and what to see. So that you do not rush for a long time, sorting through the lists of the best by genre, author or year, we have compiled a recipe for the perfect vacation. Here are five ideal comedies from the classic Hollywood era: black and white, with top-notch actors, beautiful and funny.

It happened one night

The spoiled daughter of the rich man Ellie (Claudette Colbert), against her parental will, marries a rogue pilot, but ends up under lock and key on her father's yacht. Having escaped, the girl tries to get to New York on her own and meets the unfortunate journalist Peter Warne (Clark Gable) on the way, who gives her a choice: either he helps her get to the chosen one in exchange for history, or informs her father about her whereabouts. Love does not keep itself waiting long. One of the best comedies of the genre wizard Frank Capra and the first film in history to win all five major Oscar awards. Among the devoted fans of the painting are Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler.

Easy life

The wife of one of the largest bankers in America buys another fur coat without demand, which infuriates her husband, who throws the new thing out the window. The fur coat falls on Mary's head, barely making ends meet. As a result of a series of misunderstandings, some of the banker's clients begin to consider the girl his new mistress and try to bribe her in every possible way. Mary herself, meanwhile, falls in love with an employee of a night diner, not suspecting that he is in fact the son of the same rich man. In the lion's share of the comedies of the height of the Great Depression, money was just as important a part of a happy ending as love. Plus, by today's standards, the film's recipe for female happiness can raise a number of questions. It is nonetheless one of the finest examples of the genre, written by the great Preston Sturges.

Awful truth

Returning from a trip to Florida, Jerry (Cary Grant) discovers that his wife Lucy (Irene Dunn) has spent the night with her music teacher Armand. She, in turn, finds out that Jerry lied about the trip to Florida, and in the end the couple decides to divorce. Waiting for the end of the divorce proceedings, the spouses in every possible way prevent each other from re-establishing their personal lives and in the process realize that they still love each other. The Awful Truth made Cary Grant a star and is considered one of Leo McCary's best comedies. He subsequently tarnished his reputation somewhat with anti-communist dramas, but still managed to remain in history as one of the main and original masters of the genre.

Raising a crumb

A shy and clumsy paleontologist (still the same Cary Grant) is trying to convince a wealthy patroness to make a large donation to the museum in which he works. By coincidence, the hero meets her eccentric niece (Katharine Hepburn), who is imbued with sympathy for him and tries in every possible way to prevent his impending wedding from taking place. In particular, she asks a paleontologist to help her with the education of Little, a leopard from Brazil, which she plans to give to her aunt. Despite the absurd script, Howard Hawkes' film became the most important comedy of the decade, ahead of its time for a number of reasons. For example, it is believed that in "Baby" for the first time in the history of cinema the word "gay" sounds in relation to orientation (in the most famous joke of the entire film, invented by Cary Grant during the filming). The heroine Katharine Hepburn, meanwhile, is considered the progenitor of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl image, which flooded rom-coms many years later.

Adam's rib

Having discovered treason, a woman wounds her husband with a pistol and ends up in the dock. A married couple of lawyers, having quarreled over breakfast about the case, undertakes to defend the interests of opposing parties. The husband believes that the main thing is to follow the letter of the law, the wife is convinced that the double standards of a patriarchal society are used against the defendant. Along the way, the marriage of lawyers begins to burst at the seams. George Cukor's film Adam's Rib is the sixth collaboration between actors Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, famous for their indescribable chemistry on the screen and uneasy, long-term and touching extramarital relationships in real life.
