"Light in the Ocean" is released - a leisurely and beautiful tape about a childless family who found a child in a boat on the shore. When Michael Fassbender begins to talk about himself as a young man, the classic tabloid ploy about celebrities before they became famous rises before our eyes. He recalls playing hard rock, wearing a bad ponytail of long hair, suffering from acne and losing his virginity at 18: "Impossible, is it?" The word "self-aware" is badly translated into Russian, something between self-confidence and a slight degree of narcissism - Fassbender is aware of the impression he makes and knows for sure that 18 years will not return: the era of his own inexpressiveness is in the distant past. Now he even depicts fishing in the Letterman show, sitting in the pose of a 19th century nobleman.

Acting in serials since the early 2000s, the actor from an intellectual German-Irish family hit the big screen with two extremely opposite roles - a homeless romantic soul in the not-so-famous film "Angel" by Francois Ozon and the pretentious role of Stelios in "300 Spartans" by Zach Snyder. Since then, both the sentimental and the heroic have turned out to be human and direct: not everyone has been given the posture of a bygone era. Just like playing Magneto from the Marvel Universe or in the Alien prequel, as soon as Michael appears in the frame, the heavy structures of the blockbuster become invisible. Fassbender jokes that he is playing on autopilot and has no idea where his roles are born - the fact is that when his tactility is added to neutral remarks, it is impossible to break away.

With the body, Michael Fassbender began working with director Steve McQueen when they came up with Hunger. According to family legend, Fassbender is a descendant of the Irish fighter for independence Michael Collins, the most important symbol of resistance to tyranny. In Hunger, the actor carries the banner with full awareness of the magnetism of his vulnerability: bruised skin, bruises, sunken cheeks and protruding ribs. No empire of temptation - a lot of work, control, plans, realized and unrealized ideas: Fassbender seizes one of the main characters of the XXI century as a translucent, productive superstar invisible. In a black turtleneck and jeans, he ricochets cues and situations, reflects and absorbs impulses and processes them into simple solutions - but as a person, not a machine: with errors and irregularities.

What is behind "normalcy" and how we transform human experience into theoretical is a question that is addressed by another memorable role of Michael - Carl Jung in David Cronenberg's Dangerous Method. In it, the triangle of the uneasy relationship between Freud, Jung and patient Sabine Spielrain becomes a source of reflection and introspection for all three. When science is just emerging, you yourself are both a scientist and a field of experiments. Anxious, self-critical and hesitant, Carl Jung is the most interesting character in the Cronenberg triangle. No matter how much Michael tries to dissuade, this is not played on autopilot.

Inglourious Basterds

Quentin Tarantino's magnum opus was invented for many years and acquired new details and characters - built around several long scenes, it introduces the main characters gradually. Thus, the key character of Michael Fassbender, Archie Hickox, appears already in the second half of the film: he plays a British intelligence officer, encrypted as a Nazi officer, who is planning a terrorist attack against Hitler. The story of Bobby Sands, a fighter in the Irish Republican Army, actually took place in Northern Ireland in the early 80s. During the years of police brutality and heightened xenophobia under Margaret Thatcher, bullying of political prisoners was common practice. Bobby Sands decides to protest with a prolonged hunger strike, which has enormous consequences not only for him, but for the whole of Britain.

Hunger is a dance-film, a tangible, physiological experience that easily unbalances. Fassbender captures the transformation of an earthly man into a hunted beast, who suffers for a generation and sacrifices himself so that others do not have to do it. Steve McQueen's film won the Best Debut in Cannes and became one of the main political expressions of the 21st century. “Innovation comes from constraints,” Fassbender says of his roles, and that has a lot to do with his Bobby Sands.

Aquarium

The independent drama by British director Andrea Arnold is about a teenager living in a concrete jungle on the outskirts. Her only salvation from the rudeness of her mother and a dull environment is dances in which she transforms and finds new boundaries of herself. She leads another search for boundaries with the hero of Michael Fassbender: this is her mother's too cute boyfriend, who is foolish enough to get involved in a relationship with a minor, but does not have the courage to take responsibility for it. A light-hearted rider, sweatpants and hoodies, absent gaze and weekly stubble, Fassbender perfectly captures the image of the dream man in the eyes of a young teenage girl.

It is her vulnerable, simple and not giving up Jane Eyre that does not match the figure of Sir Rochester on horseback - a wealthy owner, whose daughter she works as a governess. The brilliant Sir Rochester is, of course, Fassbender, who is not a match for a girl in a modest dress, no matter how kind and well-read she is. Only a tragic denouement softens the contradiction of their unequal union.

Ridley Scott's catchy thriller about merciless corruption is an example of a simple and powerful crime story, made by the rules of cinema on the verge of bad taste. Michael Fassbender plays an advisor in a border state - a few kilometers away is the most dangerous city in the world, where life is worthless: this is Mexico. The advisor has an ideal lover, wealth and a desire to have everything at once - he is not able to refuse a single offer to earn more. Pleasant by the standard and disposed to himself, he does not see the edges and does not know how to calculate the steps - a conditional evil with blue eyes, which does not feel evil, the actor succeeds in the top ten.

Anyone who has watched "The Advisor" will say that it is definitely worth spending time with him for the sake of the "catfish in the aquarium" scene and the perfect caste: Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender meet in a fast-paced chess game - they win, of course, money. A story similar in terms of the alignment of forces is Steven Soderbergh's outstanding action "Knockout", where Fassbender plays an insidious MI6 agent and, in general, another bastard.
