FOR THE HEADING "WARDROBE" we photograph beautifully, distinctively or oddly dressed people in their favorite things and ask them to tell stories related to them. This week our heroine is Nailya Golman, event manager at Dewar's Powerhouse.
One rule seems important to me in clothes: if you want to dress up, dress up. Walking to a bakery in a red dress, throwing garbage in a fur coat on a satin robe, going for cigarettes in chains and earrings - all this adorns life. The opposite is also important: if you don’t want to dress up, don’t do it wherever you have to go today. It's better to dress up from the heart, otherwise you will feel like an idiot later.
In addition to this simple law, my wardrobe is built on three pillars: second-hand, swaps and lack of a sense of proportion. In this regard, it is much more than I need, and there are many similar things in it. Three beige skirts, three red dresses, four sequined T-shirts - just a bunch of identical pieces, because I drag everything home in search of the ideal. Where that came from, I do not always remember. From time to time in this heap I just find something and start wearing it - that week, for example, this is how wonderful pants with a python print were discovered.
Every morning I wake up among these deposits and think: we must throw everything out. Or at least half - because the second is definitely enough to live smartly for another year or two. But in general, swaps help a lot in this situation. A couple of years ago, my friends and I came up with the idea of changing unnecessary things, and since then I and another 150 friends (and not very familiar) girls spend ten times less on clothes, and we get more joy. Changing is easier than buying: it’s fun, relieves the agony of choice, costs nothing, and most often brings unexpected results. If you are not yet exchanging clothes with your girlfriends - start urgently, I strongly advise.
Strange Ways patch, second-hand fur coat, Strogo Vintage jeans, DPH T-shirt, adidas sneakers
When I worked as a festival selector, I was sent on business trips - for example, to the Berlin Film Festival. It was a beautiful life that was not easy to afford: the travel allowances were paid small even six months later, so as a student I managed to go there and eat there on micro-sums cut out of occasional part-time jobs and pocket money. For the nine days of the Berlinale, I took pocket money with me, it seems, 100 euros - 70 of which on the very first day were spent on a dream fur coat, in which I have been wearing it for the fifth year, every season neatly patching holes in it. I don't remember what I ate the rest of that week, but what difference does it make what you eat if you have an astrakhan fur coat on your shoulders.
The cap was just found at home - I don't know where it came from. But the patch on it is a dear present from a friend. “Power squared” is also a special thing: this is a T-shirt of a bar, which I used to love to go to, and this summer I came to work. A year ago I looked at these T-shirts and was embarrassed to ask the guys for one. Now she ordered them herself and was terribly happy when, taking advantage of the position, she took for herself as many as three pieces of different colors.
Zara coat, flea market bag, unknown brand loafers, Strogo Vintage jeans
The shoes, which look like fashionable herring, came from a stylist friend, who, in turn, received them from a stylist friend. A challenge trophy of unknown brand and amazing beauty. The coat is 12 years old. Mom gave it to me when I was in the tenth grade - all these years I have been wearing it, and it invariably produces a magical effect on others. Ideal, by the way, clothing for dating. All of my jeans over the past year have been bought from the girls at Strogo Vintage - they always have a selection of nice, good old plain denim pants. And not only them, by the way.
H&M Pants, Second Hand Jacket, Kimchi Riot T-shirt
A ninja suit, aka the perfect hangover outfit: soft, black, not distracting from anything. Both things were bought by a fluke for a penny. The pants came to hand at a five-dollar sale, and the jacket turned up on a cold day in St. Petersburg, when I went into a thrift store in search of a sweater, as I arrived dressed not for the weather. Mike is a gift: kimchi is my favorite food, and when I saw on my friend's Instagram that she got into a bar called Kimchi Riot, I expressed my delight so violently that a week later she just brought me a T-shirt of this institution.
H&M trousers, fur coat and T-shirt of unknown brands
When I came to my new job at the height of summer, I saw this huge piece of cotton candy in a basket in the corner in the office. After asking a colleague what it was, I found out that it was a fur coat that she did not wear, but her dog was chilling on it. I thought that I needed more than the dog, and took it. So far, I have found exactly one case to leave the house in this form - when the dress code was indicated by the phrase "Come in the costume of a diva" to the Pika-Pika party. But I believe, I believe - there will be more cases.
Second-hand dress, unknown bomber jacket, Nike sneakers
Once I bought a Chinese qipao dress at the Megastil store, which was not enough for me. On the same evening I presented it to my friend Ole Austreich, as she is exactly one size smaller than me. A couple of days later, Austreich gave me the same red - which, as it turned out, had been with her for a year and was exactly the size of her. A bomber is also a gift, one of those things that are sometimes given to me with the words: "Nelia, I don't know what to do with such clothes, but I think you know, so here you go."
Monki sundress, backpack and shoes from the Istanbul market
The sundress is another success from the swap, I got a completely new one. These are the most comfortable summer clothes I've come across: they don't fit tight, they fit nicely, they have two huge pockets. If I had to wear a uniform, I would like it to be like that.
I hunted for a carpet backpack and slippers for a long time. The last time I went to Istanbul, I specially planned a day to search for these two things among the endless shops in the Grand Bazaar. I searched for an hour, bargained for two more.
Skirt from the Megastil store, Topshop skirt, H&M turtleneck
Everything is clear here - this is a Kim Kardashian costume, in which, as it were, there is nothing to be ashamed of. Like many women in the world, most of my life I was terribly worried about my figure: I am short, not thin, I have a big butt, and there is no way to hide it. Fortunately, at some point it dawned on me that there was no need to try to hide such obvious things - and from that moment my life became much easier and more pleasant.
Strogo Vintage fur coat, dress made by mom
Zoo costume: a fur coat with a leopard and a dress with swans. An artificial spotted fur coat is a thing in which everything is done a little more imposing than without it. It’s even strange that I got it just two weeks ago, because I went to her all my life, I think so. Here, of course, you have to be careful: she is from the category of things that begin to dashingly manage your life as soon as you find yourself in them. Having bought it, I didn’t take it off for some time, until I realized that the way of life to which she persistently disposed, I simply couldn’t stand it physically for more than three days.
Mom once made a dress for herself, but in the end I got it because I had a plan. It consisted in the fact that I waited for a long time and moaned a little. One of the most beloved and most successful dresses in my wardrobe - she always receives compliments from others, which are especially pleasant to answer, because in return you can tell me what a cool mother is.
Vintage kimono, Zara decoration, H&M pants, Econika sandals
There is a point of view that wearing a kimono outside of tradition is not very beautiful and, perhaps, not very ethical. I respect this point of view very much, but I do not share it - as well as in general I do not share the scrupulousness about the appropriation of one or another traditional national style in 2016. Moreover, how to resist when such beauty. It looks like new, if you do not look closely at the lining, which shows that it is 40 years old. Also, by the way, everyone usually thinks about the turquoise dragon - but it's just Zara. Also, by the way, I got it on a swap.
Jean-Jacques de Castelbajac coat, H&M trousers, Dr. Martens
The red martins are the perfect surprise swap, I don't think I would have bought them myself if they hadn't come into my hands. But the coat was bought at a garage sale on Wonderzine's birthday, which we made together with the editorial staff this summer. There I met the reader Masha and fell in love with her sense of taste: in addition to this coat, I bought two more things from her, and later I also received my favorite perfume from her at the moment.
This coat is a "house" type thing that you put on and just live in it. It is cut from some kind of crazy blanket, it is impossible not to notice it, and also no one has yet been able to understand at first glance how exactly it is arranged. When I doubted whether to buy it, my friend and moral guide Rita Popova said: “Nailya, this coat is an interesting person. I think you should buy it to live the life of an interesting person. " She, as in the overwhelming majority of cases, was absolutely right - this is how it works.
The red heart medallion is a souvenir from Thailand that I have never been to. I wear it inside Thailand, imagining it as part of a costume of some princess from a cartoon: just a plastic red heart. Badges are gifts from friends. One is a reminder of people who are far away and dear to me now living in Japan, the second is a test of the pen of two people who are going to make a line of the best enamel pins. My dream is to wear them all, but so far I've only got this one.
JNBY jacket, unknown brand skirt, SEE glasses, Strogo Vintage rubber flip flops
Sometimes I try to be very serious - these days I dress like this and also paint my lips in a dark color. It almost always works. This suit has another very important practical feature: all things here are completely or almost waterproof. So this is primarily a good way to leave the house on a rainy day - I don't use umbrellas (it's useless, I lose umbrellas, and they are also uncomfortable), so I have to come up with waterproof outfits. By the way, from the experience of this shooting, I learned that people look like complete idiots if they seriously look into the frame with dark glasses.
Bathrobe from the Istanbul market, H&M jeans
Robe - Same Day Harvest as Carpet Backpack a few frames above. For a minute I honestly bargained for him in English, but it quickly became clear that the old man who was selling him was from Uzbekistan, so he spoke to me in wonderful Russian for another 20 minutes, treated me to tea and eventually threw off the price four times. I got the perfect summer jeans from the wardrobe of the same Olya Austreich, and the jewelry from Alisa Tayozhnaya. It is noteworthy that if you sing, you can loudly beat out the rhythm on it, thus getting a full-fledged musical instrument at your disposal.
Chinese second-hand shirt, trousers from Megastil store
I have seen few things more beautiful than this shirt in my life, and I have nothing to add here.
Strogo Vintage cardigan, trousers from Megastil store, Econika sandals
The best find in a year of my friendship with Strogo is a serious, but bright and extremely comfortable cardigan, in which I feel like a smart and responsible adult. I wear it to events where you need to keep your posture. Sandals are just a holiday, it's a pity that they were disgusting and after five exits from the house they began to look as if I had been wearing them for a couple of years.
All jewelry - homemade or vintage
Tassel earrings are my fix idea. I keep losing them and making new ones, like these burgundy and gold, collected from scrap materials. Wooden earrings are a gift from the Stameska carpentry workshop, in which serious tables and cabinets are sculpted from all sorts of wood with finishing of the hundredth level of complexity. Separate city and joy.
Perfume: L'Artisan Parfumeur, Dolce & Gabbana, Yves Saint Laurent
Until this summer, I was a film critic. And, of course, she dreamed at least in some way to be like Boris Ridiculous, because Boris is an outstanding person and cultural figure. If you do not know anything about Boris, this is generally normal, but I advise you to find out something about him, you may open up to the magical world of extraordinary cinema. So, to be like Boris is not so easy. But one day I succeeded - it was when he told me that he also wears Yves Saint Laurent Noble Leather perfume. Since then, I began to appreciate them even more.
Also, when I was a film critic, I sometimes - rarely - wrote large and important texts. One of the main such texts in my life was a hefty essay about the director Alejandro Khodorovsky for the Seans magazine. If you do not know anything about Khodorovsky, this, again, is generally normal, but I strongly advise you to find out. For this text, among other things, I had to read and listen to lectures about Tarot cards for a month. And then I went to buy perfume - and, of course, I could not buy anything except the scent named after the Tarot arcana.
There is no story about the third perfume - they smell so that I eat this smell for breakfast every day instead of dessert. Sometimes I just go to the shelf to smell them once more, because I can't breathe. I got them from that very reader Masha. Masha, thank you very much. I'm so happy.
