The Guardian reports that in 2017, HarperCollins will publish John RR Tolkien's previously unpublished novel The Tale of Beren and Lúthien, a story of the love of a common man and an immortal elf. The powerful father of the main character, the ruler of the enchanted elven kingdom of Elu Thingol, was against the marriage of his daughter with a mortal - therefore he gave Beren incredibly difficult tasks that the young man managed to complete, and Lúthien sacrificed her immortality for the sake of life with her lover.

This plot meant a lot to the writer and was repeatedly reworked by him, one of its versions is presented in the collection of myths and legends of Middle-earth "The Silmarillion". According to Christopher Tolkien, who publishes the story, the new book will be the first to publish the first version of the work, many of the details of which were lost in The Silmarillion. It is known that the prototype for the beautiful Lúthien was Tolkien's wife Edith Brett: the names of the elf and her lover are engraved on the graves of the author of The Lord of the Rings and his wife.
