There is hardly a single person in the worldwho does not know what crocs are: these slippers were scolded and included in the lists of "the ugliest shoes in the world", despite their convenience and comfort. But in September, an amazing thing happened: Christopher Kane brought girls in crocs to the podium - those same rubber (in fact, they are made from a special crosslight material) clogs.
The appearance of slippers on the podium for most viewers remains a joke for a joke. Crocs are still a shameful wardrobe item
Kane not only took the famous design as a basis, but entered into an official partnership with the manufacturer. Predictably, the public rebelled, ridiculing the "marble" crocs in stones on all social networks. The Scottish designer even had to make a public statement in defense of his new creation: at the presentation, he advised everyone who criticized “if they are not God” to keep their opinions to themselves. About the collaboration itself, confessing his love for Crocs products, Kane says: “I always work with unexpected items and combinations, transforming everyday life into affordable luxury. Marble prints give a very earthy feel, and crocs are a very earthy thing, no matter if you wear them with an evening gown or jeans. Crocs are arguably the most comfortable shoe ever, and I love that they are pretty weird and that they are often referred to as “ugly”. There is something very naive, childish in their form, and they look awkward on the leg."
It's not hard to feel a designer's fondness for these ridiculous shoes, especially after his convincing explanations. It is difficult to argue with the fact that there is nothing more convenient than it in the summer. So far, however, their appearance on the podium for most viewers remains a joke for the sake of a joke. Crocs are still a "shameful" wardrobe item, you can only walk a dog or wander around a summer cottage in them - 70% of participants in a survey conducted by British Vogue on Twitter are convinced that they will never wear these sneakers. 10%, however, are ready for experiments - but only if their pair of crosslight clogs is Kane's authorship. Will the defense eventually collapse and, if so (of which there is almost no doubt), how long will it last? We'll see in the spring.
The first to raise the topic of crocs in public space, by the way, was not a Scot: in different shots, sneakers flicker, albeit rarely, but neatly, and one of the editors of the ManRepeller blog, Haley Naman, suggested at the beginning of September that they could become the new “white sneakers "- that is, universal footwear for any look. The material that said this was prepared in direct partnership with Crocs - which means there is every reason to believe that the company is actively storming the fashion industry. Slipper makers hope to rehabilitate the publicly despised footwear and stop closing their own stores for lack of interest in the product. It is customary in the company to take pride in the fact that “crocs are bought alone and for life,” but this approach cannot constantly increase sales. Capturing a more fashionable audience, which buys even without urgent need, would just help the cause.
Crocs are not the only such case. UGG is also actively trying to change its reputation as a manufacturer of “shameful” shoes for a manufacturer of “fashionable” shoes, for which the word “fugly” is firmly entrenched to describe its products. Sheepskin shoes, which just six years ago were incredibly popular, have managed to acquire conflicting connotations. In order to make it fashionable again, the UGG team brought in Briton Alex Chang, who, in turn, called for help from the Starship Troopers. The collaboration with Demna Gvasalia became a lucky ticket to the fashionable present for another star of the 2000s, the plush Juicy Couture suit. The designer opened the last couture Fashion Week with a modern version of the famous clothes.
We remember many examples of how things that were once considered exclusively signs of bad taste make their way into great fashion. Socks with sandals, tracksuits, fake nails, shuttle tartan bags, underwear sticking out from under clothes - all these things and combinations had golden times when "bad taste" suddenly became good. Some of the lucky ones were finally recognized and, possibly, irrevocably. Even thin nylon tights, which just yesterday were branded by all and sundry, have recently returned en masse to the shows.
Several years ago, I accidentally left the house wearing socks and rubber flip flops - those that were then worn exclusively in the pool. I discovered the mistake only in the metro: by that time I was already catastrophically late for the university, so I had to spend the whole day in this form. Then I did not want at all that the people I met saw in me as a person who, without hesitation, puts on rubber slippers with socks. The whole day to all the acquaintances who came across on the way, I always told the story of my impossible absent-mindedness, pushing them with my elbow in their hips, so that they would certainly not decide that I was one of "these".
Plaid bags, tracksuits with three stripes, leopard mini, rhinestones - all this is alien to a person who is keen on fashion, as long as these details are not taken into circulation by someone
It's embarrassing to think about it now. Would a similar little thing provoke the same reaction now? Of course no. Firstly, with age, I want to believe that people pacify snobbery, reacting to the little things of life much more calmly. Secondly, you won’t surprise anyone today with rubber flip flops in tandem with socks or not. They lost their negative connotations, establishing themselves in the official fashion and appearing in several dozen fashion shoots. Rihanna's fluffy slippers for Puma or rubber ones from the Vans / Nintendo collaboration are now on the hunt. He put his hand to the rehabilitation of massive slippers, by the way, all the same Christopher Kane, who brought them to the catwalk in the spring-summer 2012 season. Checkered bags, tracksuits with three stripes, leopard mini, rhinestones - all this is alien to a person who is passionate about fashion until these details are taken into circulation by some of the designers and placed in a completely different context.
Ghosts of the 2000s like rhinestones, logos, plush costumes and false nails in Russia are not easy at all. Many are so accustomed to the fact that all this, put together, must certainly sound a fashionable alarm that they still cannot relax. But it is precisely to relax, allow yourself to open up to something new and finally start looking at “not yours” without prejudice - this is what needs to be done now. Instead of waiting for designers to remember and cult this or that thing again, you should take it out of the closet and start wearing it right now - just because you want to. Snobbery is generally a bad thing, and no one should make excuses for their love of crocs or uggs.
