Winter is not the most popular time to release albums. In addition to a small number of interesting January releases, they like to keep most of the new products until spring. The announcements of new works planned for 2017 should not be expected earlier than the beginning of the year, when the press and music lovers will already sum up the results. Nevertheless, this does not mean that we will have absolutely nothing to listen to - we are talking about what should not be missed in the next three months.

The rolling stones

Blue and Lonesome

The last album of the classics of rock music was released, scary to say, 11 years ago. Unfortunately, until the moment when they release new tracks, it is worth counting not days, but months or years, because while they are releasing a cover album for the first time. "Blue and Lonesome" will only consist of rehash of classic blues standards, and I must say that the songs of Buddy Johnson and Little Walter are very good for the group. Nevertheless, it is somewhat sad and even unexpected to realize that The Rolling Stones are already in such a status that they can afford everything, including a cover album (as Bob Dylan recently released a recording with Sinatra's rehash). Although the mood of the songs themselves and, as a result, the rollings are exactly the opposite - they are not busy with cheerfulness.

Childish gambino

Awaken, My Love

Over the past year, Donald Glover has added a lot of notable lines to his resume: now he can be represented not only as a rapper, writer of the series "30 Rock" and Troy from "Community", but also the creator of the TV series Atlanta, as well as the future Lando Calrissian. Despite the fact that his previous album, "Because the Internet", was meticulously thought out and unusually treated with the familiar hip-hop sound, Glover is still rather condescending as a musician. The new songs, judging by the first single "Me and Your Mama", should finally change that. The title of the track is rather confusing - behind it is a two-part composition, reminiscent of both the experiments of Kanye West and the band King Crimson (which is not that far from each other). Glover himself promises that there will be practically no hip-hop on the album - which makes everything even more interesting.

Run the jewels

RTJ3

Hip-hop veterans Keeler Mike and RP conceived Run The Jewels as a reaction to the genre and tried (successfully) to show that hip-hop fun can be technical. Much more social comments appeared on the second album - the duo put lyrics about police lawlessness, robbery and other terrible things on the same incendiary beats. Now that Donald Trump has won the election, their music may become even sadder - Killer Mike, who fervently supported Bernie Sanders, reads in one of the tracks: "We told you, but you did not listen, so we will continue to talk." So far, the calendar of winter albums is replete with titles that have been carried over from time to time - here are Beck, and Fergie, and Scryptonite - but Run The Jewels vows to release the album before the end of the year, even at the end of December.

Drake

More Life

On his birthday, Canada's most famous rapper put three new tracks on his OVO Sound Radio on Apple Music and announced that his new album, More Life, will follow his April album Views in December. The musician said that it will not be an album or a mixtape, but a playlist. What this means is not really clear, but Drake's new tracks speak for themselves: he has become even darker and more touchy. In one of the new compositions, "Two Birds, One Stone," he drives through two colleagues, Pusha T and Kid Cudi, the latter of whom is now being treated for depression in the clinic - this detail adds unpleasant touches to Drake's portrait. Nevertheless, the rapper and his team still have not forgotten how to write the biting pop songs - although three new tracks do not attract hits yet, “More Life” clearly has something for discos.

The flaming lips

Oczy Mlody

The Flaming Lips are such a prolific band that it is strange to be surprised at their 16th album. It is striking, though, that since the release of their tribute to Sergeant Pepper two years ago, they have only acted as a backing band for Miley Cyrus and helped her record the eerily underrated Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz. No six o'clock songs, no recordings with a bunch of guests, nothing - all the more interesting in contrast to listen to new compositions recorded for the LP, whose name is translated from Polish as "Young Eyes". The Flaming Lips are unusually calm here (especially after the past "The Terror"), peaceful and at times almost enter the territory of R&B and pop music, albeit in their own special style.

The xx

I See You

The already modest and secretive trio The xx said practically nothing about the recording of their third album. In an interview about his solo album, the member of the Jamie xx collective was mostly silent or said that nothing was clear about the group yet. The very first song "On Hold" practically does not add new information: well, yes, it is noticeable how much Jamie's passion for electronics influenced, but the album as a whole may turn out to be completely different (although a more optimistic mood cannot but rejoice). It is worth saying that the presence of the composition "A Violent Noise", conceived as a continuation of Jamie's track "The Rest Is Noise", hints that with last year's "In Color" there can be intersections not only in terms of sound, but also in terms of mood.

Austra

Future Politics

Austra Canadians from gloomy music, pressing on the listener, quickly switched to cold, but moderately danceable music. On the new album with a topical title, they continue to make tenacious and melancholic songs. They will be dedicated to the escape from the dystopia, into which, according to the group, we are gradually sinking, as well as liberation from boundaries and conventions. Contrary to the description, the music has not become more experimental, and it rather speaks of her mood. It really does have some iridescent notes that make you think about a utopian, not evil and uncomfortable future.

Cloud nothings

Life Without Sound

Cloud Nothings' Americans initially played noisy rock music that could easily be mistaken for thoughtlessness. However, on the third album "Attack On Memory" they both sounded clearer and made it clear that in fact their songs are about how difficult and sad life can be. In general, Cloud Nothings, along with the Wavves group, revived interest in pop punk, but not in the context in which it was played in the 90s and 2000s. Unlike the teenage rebellion, this is more a story about your feelings, just the melodies remained simple. “Life Without Sound”, judging by the fresh song “Modern Act”, will be much lighter than the previous records, but not necessarily cheerful - it's just that hopelessness has been replaced by optimism, that's all.

Japandroids

Near to the Wild Heart of Life

On the same day with Cloud Nothings, the Canadians Japandroids are releasing their album - another rowdy group that devoted most of their lyrics to their youth. On the new album, however, they have matured a little too - it is promised that the lyrics will rather not be memories of a stormy youth, but a story about dynamic events that are taking place right now. If earlier the group's instrumentation was quite simple, just a guitar and drums, now they promise synthesizers and girlfriends on backing vocals, as well as a seven-minute track that will be closer not to perky rock, but to house. Apparently, the group was prompted to experiment by the fact that they took some rest from recording (their last album was released four years ago), as well as the constant change of places.

Sampha

Process

The singer Sampha, who is just releasing his first album, has already managed to work with Solange Knowles, Kanye West, Drake and a number of British electronic engineers - many music lovers have been waiting for his debut for many years. The reason for the delay was both the creative block and the literal inability to sing - the doctors discovered that he had a sore throat. Overcoming all the difficulties of life, the musician sings very beautiful songs, some of which at first seem deliberately difficult - only the singer's voice helps the listener to understand them.Judging by the first singles from the album, Sampha will maneuver somewhere between experiments and British pop sound of the 2000s, which is not at all shameful, but, perhaps, will help him finally enter the major pop league, which, strictly speaking, he deserves. …
