On August 1, the Basmanny Court of Moscow ruled to deport a citizen of Uzbekistan, a journalist for Novaya Gazeta, Ali Feruz (Khudoberdi Nurmatov). He was found guilty under Part 3.1 of Article 18.8 of the Administrative Code (violation by a foreign citizen of his stay in Moscow, expressed in the absence of documents). After the ruling, the journalist tried to commit suicide, but he was stopped by the bailiffs. The journalist said that he would rather die than return to his homeland, where he was persecuted by the security forces.
“Khudoberdi Nurmatov was born in Russia. His mother lives in Russia, in the Altai Territory. Therefore, its issuance to another state is impossible by law. I also want to note that Nurmatov has filed an appeal with the court and is in the process of preparing a whole package of documents that will help him finally gain the right to legally exist, "said Dmitry Muratov, editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta.
The Union of Journalists of Russia has already stood up for Ferouz, as well as the representative of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe on Freedom of the Media, Arlem Desir.
In addition, a petition has appeared on the Change.org website demanding to stop the procedure for the deportation of a journalist, you can sign it here.
