Heavyweight

The man in the baseball cap and glasses on the cover of the podcast is by Jonathan Goldstein, and this is really his signature look. Goldstein, the son of American-Canadian Jews, was born in Brooklyn, raised in Montreal, and returned to New York decades later; wherever he lived, despite his neurotic nature, he always managed to find friends. It is thanks to the latter that the first season of "Heavyweight" appeared, in which the presenter does what we all are forbidden from childhood - namely, pokes his nose into other people's affairs.

Once a week, Goldstein invites his acquaintance to reflect on the past and finally face life's biggest disappointments, whether it be unreturned CDs, the undiscovered ashes of his father, or bullying at school. The presenter says so - I will be your "podcast psychotherapist". His experience in journalism helps the author not to miss the choice of plots: before joining Gimlet Media, he studied writing and producing with Ira Glass on This American Life, after which he hosted his own radio show for eleven years.

Despite the triviality of the situations to which the heroes return, the experience catalyzed by Goldstein is literally transformative. It is the format that provides intimacy and reality of experiences: casual non-stop conversations, awkward pauses and endless phone calls. Empathy, philanthropy and kind irony - all this is in "Heavyweight".
