Often, documentaries are just as good as on the intensity of the passions of feature films. Ups, downs, incredible success stories - stories that could easily become the basis for several biopics. We have collected the best festival films of recent years, centered on the stories of the most important people from the world of fashion: from the acclaimed legend Vivienne Westwood to the real prodigy Zach Posen - without them the industry would be completely different.

Westwood: Punk, icon, activist

Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist, 2018

Documentary filmmaker Lorna Tucker, who previously worked with short films, received her first Grand Prix Jury nomination at Sundance for this film, which in itself is a good start to her career. In front of her lens, the main punk icon of Great Britain Vivienne Westwood recalls the most important moments of her own path: from the early years of the Sex Pistols, which she reluctantly talks about due to the conflict with Malcolm McLaren, to her “repeated” return to the catwalks and world recognition. The director pays special attention to Westwood's relationship with her husband Andreas Kronthaler, who has become her constant collaborator - both in life and in her work - and co-author of each new collection.

Dries van Noten

Dries, 2017

Director Rainer Holzmer managed to get to places where strangers do not often find themselves. Namely, to the studio and home of Dries van Noten, one of the most interesting and distinctive designers of our time. Combining patterns and materials that at first glance do not match each other, he makes a real revolution and transforms everyday silhouettes. The film's geography moves viewers from a show inside a giant warehouse in Paris to a factory in Calcutta, where each embroidery for the Belgian's collection is hand-crafted, and then to a country house in which all things speak of their wearer's unique taste.

Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards

Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards, 2017

The name of this designer sounded from the lips of Carrie Bradshaw almost more often than the word "sex", which is placed in the title of the series. It is not surprising that everyone admits Manolo Blahnik's love: from the reserved and stingy with compliments Anna Wintour to Sofia Coppola, who invited him to work on creating the image of Marie Antoinette. The film's director, Michael Roberts, is a former fashion and style director at Vanity Fair and an old acquaintance of the designer himself, as can be seen in the ironic tone of the first-person story, the author of which is not averse to making fun of the audience.

McQueen

McQueen, 2018

Collected from archival records and a series of interviews with relatives and friends of the early deceased Alexander McQueen, the story of Ian Bonhot and Peter Ettedga became a postscript of his career eight years after the tragedy. All the images that he somehow created emphasized the best in man, revealed his inner beauty, but at the same time paradoxically exposed the fragility of the internal structure. It is difficult to imagine a designer of this magnitude; with his departure, another era began in the fashion world with its own rules, which he once successfully avoided.

House of Z

2017

The youngest designer on this list, Zac Posen, by the age of thirty-eight, had managed to hold many shows, abandon contracts with Gucci and Dior and develop his own brand. But the story that TV producer Sandy Kronopoulos has chosen to tackle reveals a darker side of the fashion industry that is rarely spoken about. Along with admirers of talent, ill-wishers always follow the designer, ready to do everything to discredit his work. Posen managed to survive the almost complete disappearance of the brand from the covers to a real renaissance in his career.

We, Margiela

We Margiela, 2017

The experiment, unique in its idea, tells the story of not one designer, but a whole team of employees of the Martin Margiela brand. Those same "people in white coats" who created collections first under the guidance of a mentor, and then on their own. In pursuit of the final result, they erase any boundaries of personality and call themselves "We". You should not expect the designer himself to appear on the screen: the idea of the director Menna Laura Meyer was not to reveal the identity of Margiela, but to strengthen the myth about him. A special role in the film is played by the main character - the master's muse Jenny Meyers, who tragically died a year before the premiere.

The Gospel of Andre

The Gospel According to André, 2017

The man who has worked in American Vogue for thirty years and who is rightfully called Anna Wintour's right-hand man occupies a special place in the list of those who influenced the fashion industry. Director Keith Novak, choosing an immodest title with a reference to the Bible, examines the phenomenon of Andre Leon Telli's success. As witnesses of his talent, she invites designers Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs and Diane von Fürstenberg and many others. So viewers will find out what makes him a truly unique influencer after so many years and why he is called "Nelson Mandela in the fashion world."
