PRODUCER: Alma Harel

Shia Labeouf's love of performances led him to create an autobiographical drama in which the actor played the role of his own father. The protagonist Otis Lorte began his career in Hollywood early, he has several successful roles and a difficult relationship with his father suffering from alcohol addiction. Young LaBeouf is portrayed by Noah Joop, known for the films A Quiet Place and Miracle, while Lucas Hedges, who can be seen in Lady Bird, portrays the older actor. "Sweetheart" director Alma Harel says that she received a draft of the script from the actor when he was being treated in a rehab. After reading it, she realized that she had to film this story and help him cope with his childhood trauma.

PRODUCER: Jennifer Kent

After the incredible success of the horror "Babadook" about the fears of every mother, Jennifer Kent's new project was expected no less than the premiere of the final part of "The Avengers". This time the action of the film will take place not in the modern world, but during the period of colonial rule in Australia. A young girl who has lost her child and husband intends to take revenge on the officers of the British army who were involved in the murder. On the way to her goal, she meets an aborigine who is ready to help her, and then - according to the estimates of the first viewers - a bloody massacre begins, in no way inferior to "Oldboy". The main role is played by Ashling Franciosi, who plays Lyanna Stark in two episodes of Game of Thrones.

Handsome, bad, ugly

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile

PRODUCER: Joe Berlinger

While a documentary series about one of America's worst maniacs was released on Netflix, the character of Ted Bundy embodied the scary Zac Efron in the feature film. However, instead of the alarming atmosphere of the real chronicle, director Joe Berlinger, who took part in both projects, builds a dashing crime story about a "handsome" criminal. Despite the significantly simplified tone of the narrative and conflicting reviews from critics, the film deserves attention as an attempt to understand the motives of the maniac. Ted Bundy firmly entered American pop culture and served as the basis for the creation of images of Hannibal Lecter and Patrick Bateman.

Paradise Hills

PRODUCER: Alice Waddington

A gated establishment for girls, futuristic interiors and a local warden duchess - set for the most unexpected debut of Spanish director Alice Waddington. Strictly speaking, in the utopian world, those who do not meet the standards of society are sent to re-education on the island. In terms of its description, the film is more likely to be categorized as guilty pleasure, but it fits perfectly into the Sundance festival program, where there is always room for experimentation. In addition, for the sake of starring in Hills of Paradise, Emma Roberts temporarily escaped Ryan Murphy's "horrors" on Fox and returned to indie projects, where she always managed to show her best side.

Wounds

Wounds

PRODUCER: Babak Anvari

Another interesting point of the program for those who follow "Sundance", but by no means obligatory for the mainstream viewers who come to the film because of Dakota Johnson and Armie Hammer in the lead roles. Bartender Will brings home a phone that a customer forgot at the establishment. After several attempts, he unlocks the screen, from where photographs of dead bodies and severed heads will fall on him and his girlfriend. The festival version of "Black Mirror" with a gloomy morality has already been scolded for the fact that at a turning point the characters discover in themselves not the best qualities, but the most terrible vices. However, the other half of the critics agree that the impotence of the heroes is inevitable and therefore more frightening than ever.

After wedding

After the wedding

Producer: Bart Freundlich

The family contract of actress Julianne Moore and her husband, director Bart Freundlich, took on the filming of a remake of the film of the same name by the Danish Suzanne Bier. Unlike the original melodrama, the emphasis will be shifted from male characters to female characters, and the action from Denmark was moved to New York, but this does not interfere with the development of the plot. Michelle Williams' heroine works at a children's orphanage, which is on the verge of closing. One day she receives an offer from a generous benefactress played by Julianne Moore, who promises to pay the missing heroine the amount of money in exchange for an assignment - to become a guest at the wedding. This is how a series of situations begins, leading to the fact that everything secret becomes apparent and the past makes itself felt.

Souvenir (part one)

The souvenir

PRODUCER: Joanna Hogg

British director Joanna Hogg brought to Sundance the first part of the dilogy, which received high marks from critics and the Grand Prix of the international competition. The story of a film school student named Julie, who finds herself in a contradictory and painful relationship with Anthony, destroying all her plans. He does not look like his usual environment and therefore looks more attractive than other friends. Anthony is well-read, loves classical opera and gives them a weekend in Venice. But behind the facade of well-being is his addiction to drugs, which will lead to unexpected consequences. The role of Julie was the debut for Tilda Swinton's daughter Honor Swinton-Byrne, by the way, her mother also appears in the film. A24 has already announced the filming of the second installment, with Robert Pattinson joining the cast.

Vacation home

The lodge

DIRECTORS: Severin Fiala, Veronica Franz

After the tragic denouement for Riley Keough's character in The House That Jack Built, the actress took revenge and starred in a horror film that sends viewers back to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. The concept of a house cut off from the rest of the world is aggravated in this case by the fact that the main character in the past survived after the ritual ceremony of the sect in which her father was a member. The director's post here was divided by another family row: Veronica Franz and her husband's nephew Severin Fiala. Together, they have been surprising the festival jury for years with their cruelty and realistic depiction of violence. Unlike the traditions of their compatriot, Austrian Michael Haneke, they do not hesitate to confess their love for the horror genre, which the director of "Funny Games" so diligently avoids in his films.

PRODUCER: Garrett Price

One of the most productive and talented young actors in Hollywood, Anton Yelchin, died in 2016 at the age of twenty-seven. The accident that ended his life was a real shock for many colleagues, but first of all, his death was a tragedy for Irina's mother, with whom he was very close. The director of the film, Garrett Price, brought in Jodie Foster, Kristen Stewart, Sophia Boutella, JJ Abrams, the entire Star Trek caste and other celebrities whose memories of Anton are built into a story about the importance of following your dreams. Throughout his career, he wanted to achieve mathematical precision in each of his roles, kept work diaries and studied not only acting, but also directing. Unfortunately, he did not manage to shoot his first film.

Leaving Neverland

Leaving neverland

PRODUCER: Dan Reid

The four-hour documentary, long before its premiere at Sundance, caused a major scandal.Michael Jackson's family called the HBO project a "public lynching" and criticized it for being unreliable. In the center of the plot were Wade Robson and Jimmy Safechuck, who in childhood communicated with the musician and spent a lot of time at his estate "Neverland", and then years later participated in the case on charges of pedophilia. Despite the fact that Jackson's innocence was proven in court, the film shows the other side of the fairy-tale world created around a man who was robbed of his own childhood.

Untouchable

Untouchable

PRODUCER: Ursula Macfarlane

The rapid decline of Harvey Weinstein's credibility and the numerous sexual harassment lawsuits took place a little less than two years ago, but the premiere of a documentary about these events was just a matter of time. The untouchability of the main producer of Hollywood collapsed at one point, and with it his career, which he had been building over the years. The events of Ursula Macfarlane's film begin in 1978, long before the very publications of The New York Times. Critics who watched the film note that with the help of the stories of several witnesses, she managed to find the right approach, but there was not enough time to fully disclose the story. However, this is still the first documentary evidence that makes it possible to realize the scale of the consequences of what Weinstein committed.
