It looks like the headwear fashion continues in 2019. We have already studied the trend for balaclavas and concluded that fancy hats and hats will stay with us for a long time. This time we are talking about the tight headdresses we saw at the recent shows of Saint Laurent, Dior and Valentino, reminiscent of either the models of the beginning of the 20th century, or comforters, or caps for the pool.

How it all started

According to one of the versions, sports comforters, which became popular thanks to skiing (as well as balaclavas), became the prototype of the now fashionable hats. The first images of such hats could be seen in the 1920s on the pages of fashion magazines and in the catalogs of major brands at the time, such as Hermès or Jean Patou. Designers drew attention to ski fashion for a reason: after the first Winter Olympics in 1924 in Chamonix, skiing suddenly became an extremely fashionable leisure and cultural phenomenon, and in famous Parisian department stores like Le Bon Marché and La Samaritaine, entire departments dedicated to outdoor activities began to open, for which at home fashion and supplying equipment and accessories.

Among the latter were hats that emancipated women (who for the first time put on a uniform as close as possible to the "male") wore so as not to freeze at ski resorts. Much later, a similar silhouette returned to the USSR - we think many with nostalgia remember touching helmets from childhood.

According to another version, the latex bathing caps that appeared in the same era, which were fastened under the chin just like pilots' hats, became the inspiration for modern designers. In the 1920s, there were many of the most seemingly bizarre designs today - some manufacturers even copied popular women's hairstyles. In the 1950s and 1960s, the fashion for bathing caps took a step further, with cheerful models embroidered with flowers at the head of the trend. Now many people are skeptical about bathing caps, but then they were not just a functional accessory, but a real fashion statement (just look at the option with a crown - we would not refuse such). So it is not surprising that the accessory has appeared in modern collections as well - as a more versatile alternative to the same balaclava.

How comforters became fashionable

In recent seasons, skin-tight hats have begun to appear on the catwalk more and more - only this week, shimmering hats resembling swimwear were seen at the Saint Laurent catwalk, while Courrèges continued the theme of puffed hoods and released fluffy hats reminiscent of the ones we wore as children. … In previous seasons, Mary Katrantzou, Miu Miu and Prada have shown variations on the theme of bathing caps or comforters. They even appeared at couture shows - in the collections of Valentino, Chanel and Dior. St Petersburg brand M_U_R makes similar wool hats from Russian brands. Among other things, comforters were once a real hit of the Vika Gazinskaya brand - pioneers in the revival of this trend.

As for celebrities, it seems that only Amber Heard, who appeared in Valentino total look at the London premiere of Aquaman, dared to try on a bathing cap so far. However, one cannot forget the more familiar option that Rihanna chose for the 2014 CFDA prize. Her hat became part of the famous "naked" outfit, which will later be entered into the context of feminist pop culture.

What to wear them with

Tight hats look great with any minimalistic sets, but designers recommend not to be shy and immediately wear them with evening dresses. Such a headdress can be combined with a tuxedo dress, as did the stylists of Saint Laurent, or even just with a formal suit. Another option is to balance the multi-colored beanie with an equally cheerful coat, as in the Miu Miu show.In summer, a bathing cap will line up with woven hats or panamas with ties - by the way, another headdress that will be popular very soon. As for warm helmets, they will become a less radical alternative to balaclava and will successfully protect from the cold of early spring.
