According to The New York Times, after twelve years, doctors managed to recover a patient, whose name was not disclosed, from HIV infection. A detailed study of this case will be published in the journal shortly.

In May 2016, an anonymous patient from London underwent a bone marrow transplant. His donor was a man with a CCR5 gene mutation, which allowed him to be resistant to HIV infection. After surgery, the patient was prescribed strong immunosuppressants, and a year later he refused antiretroviral therapy. According to the latest tests, no infected cells were found in his body, which may indicate complete remission.

Recall that the first person to recover from HIV infection was the American Timothy Brown, also known as the "Berlin Patient". He also underwent a bone marrow transplant from a mutated donor. After this incident, many doctors tried to repeat the experiment with other patients, but the surgery failed due to the possible risks and side effects of such a method.

According to the publication, the patient from Dusseldorf also underwent a bone marrow transplant from a donor with a rare CCR5 mutation. Doctors confirm that he has not been taking antiretroviral therapy for the past three months as he is in remission.
