Any outdoor enthusiast knows that a mobile phone is a very unreliable thing: the connection disappears exactly when it is most needed. And if the hike drags on and you find yourself outside the cellular coverage area for a long time, relatives and friends may start to worry seriously, without waiting for news from you.
In 2018, Somewear Labs ran a successful Kickstarter campaign with the Somewear Global Hotspot, which is much smaller than other satellite communicators and looks prettier. It can be easily attached to a backpack or put in a jacket pocket: the gadget allows you to send and receive messages, get directions or give an SOS signal. The device connects to the Iridium satellite network that covers the entire earth's surface. At the same time, Somewear Global Hotspot costs about four times less than a satellite phone connected to the same network.
