"High Society" is released is an existential fantasy drama by the French director Claire Denis, inspired by Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris. Robert Pattinson plays a member of a forced space odyssey: young delinquents are sent to the stars to find a way to tame the energy of a black hole. This is far from the first daring role of the actor: after the "Twilight" franchise, Pattinson basically works only in auteur films, starring in David Cronenberg, James Gray and Brady Corbett. In the coming year, with his participation, the horror film by Robert Eggers ("The Witch"), the anti-colonial film adaptation of Coetzee "Waiting for the Barbarians" (directed by Ciro Guerra's "Embrace of the Serpent") and the new film by Christopher Nolan are to be released. Understanding how Robert Pattinson reimagined his destiny and became the strongest actor of his generation.

“It took a very long time, we filmed for ages,” - Robert Pattinson did not hide his joy at the end of the "Twilight" saga, which brought the actor incredible popularity and the largest fee in his career. The vampire hit interfered with other filming and, worse, fueled prejudices about the actor's weak abilities: critics joked for years that, under red lenses and a thick layer of white makeup, Robert's skill could be discerned only with a strong desire. Like his co-star Kristen Stewart, Pattinson faced a real fan obsession (the last time something of this magnitude seems to have happened to the young Leonardo DiCaprio), but the next films he chose not projects to make money, but complex jobs from not the most obvious directors … Flights in the pine trees and kissing at the sunsets ended in 2012 - since then, the actor has not had a single pop studio project. Tired of a modeling career and a well-fed life in the UK, Pattinson settled in the States and switched to something completely different.

Pattinson made his way to the Cannes red carpet from posters of teenage gilti-plege. Strict costumes, light unshaven, Dior's bow accompanied a new approach to the choice of roles: not everyone dares to try himself in a criminal detective without world ambitions - and Pattinson, for example, decided on "Rover". Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis" became a pivotal film that made viewers reconsider their attitude towards the actor. A little "American Psycho", a little "Wall Street", modest in visual presentation "Cosmopolis" comes to mind almost like a one-man show by Robert: his hero sits in a limousine and takes turns receiving profitable visitors - each plays a function, but none of them touches the feelings.

A billionaire with a cold heart and a sober mind, who fell for money at a very young age and whose psychopathic behavior is socially encouraged, is a timely image: in parallel with the filming of the film, real people moved to the streets under the slogan "Occupy Wall Street". Later, the story rolled back and thousands of heroes appeared who were not too far from the character of "Cosmopolis": within a couple of years, technological billionaires inhabited Silicon Valley, earning to the third ten on the budget of an average European country.

Cronenberg immediately offered Pattinson a role in the next poisonous film, the Hollywood satire Star Map, in which Robert gets behind the wheel to haul moody superstars from point A to point B. Like any young man in Hollywood, Pattinson's character is actually. of course, he wants to be an actor, and also writes scripts in the hope of showing them to the right person. While young Damien Chazelle is filming dancing idealists-optimists in La La Land, Cronenberg crumbles skulls and makes all Southern California dwellers, without exception, mired in self-deception as idiots - there are no and never will be musical numbers.

Long awaiting the very project he will invest in both as an actor and as a writer, Pattinson seized on the American indie script Good Time, a humble gangster story of desperate brothers going to crime. The filmmakers passing by the radar, the Safdie brothers were suddenly in the spotlight, Robert received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival and showed everything he could, in case anyone had any doubts - intense acting for two hours on a shaking camera. And also the production dedication: like any indie, Good Time was harder to do than a big studio project.

The growing self-irony of the actor, his self-confidence and mocking skepticism in relation to the types that most Hollywood beauties fall out to play, began to be more conspicuous. No longer acting in franchises, he fondly recalls ridiculous castings, first kisses and cravings for the magical and subversive. The sudden caricature role of the adventurer in the Wild West in the parody indie western "Maid" was the final nail in the coffin of the red-eyed vampire. Pattinson plays the cowardly bungler Samuel Alabaster in the anecdote film with the pony Toffee: he goes to rescue a cute girl from the clutches of an armed gang and propose to her.

A very Cohen-like film about the times when horses and children in villages were treated by the same doctors, and in bars one could meet only murderers - the most ridiculous and revealingly stupid role of an actor. By his own admission, he dreamed of playing a game in the spirit of "Dumb and Dumber": in "Maid" everyone's favorite squeals like a pig, is engaged in senseless heroism, and most importantly, he does not hear the woman with whom, according to him, he is madly in love. … The black comedy proved to be capable of Pattinson, as well as previous experiments with classics, dystopia and satire. With five different promising projects for the coming year - from indie horror to the next sensation by Christopher Nolan - he no longer needs advances from critics and viewers: the star was definitely born long ago, if we suddenly did not have time to notice it.

Leader's childhood

Allegorical biography of a dictator who did not exist in reality. The actor Lars von Trier takes as a basis and sets the story of Jean-Paul Sartre about the circumstances of growing up a man who brought an irreversible nightmare to this earth. The fiend of hell looks harmless enough: the boy rushes around the house in a starched shirt, grows up in a progressive family of an important American diplomat in France, does childish mischief and refuses to speak French.

A classic cold mother with sadistic inclinations, corporal punishment, an obedient governess who became the first sexual impression, an expensive house where everyone is strangers - this is how terrible people are brought up. But the main mysterious variable in this equation is the figure of family friend Charles Marker played by Robert Pattinson, whose relationship with the protagonist's mother becomes that betrayal that triggers irreversible reactions in the future despot. We find out the real role of Marker only in the finale - he was always something more than just a family friend.

Dear friend

The beginning of a long journey is an underestimated, but cute and correctly capturing the essence of the book, the film adaptation of the most important novel by Guy de Maupassant. Georges Duroy, played by Robert Pattinson, is not just a careerist and seducer of the late 19th century, whom the author pounces on with morality. This is an eternal and popular type of person who is used to achieving results exclusively through the location of others, long-term parasitism and skillful skills of social life.

Duroy remains unrevealed for years, he owes great victories exclusively to the environment - especially to the female: all the views of the sanctimonious community are turned to a promising man. "Dear friend" did not gain national fame: the attachment of many viewers to the original prevented them from seeing in Robert Pattinson (still under the yoke of the reputation of a red-eyed lover in "Twilight") a virtuoso actor who embodied the idea of timeless superficiality and hypocrisy.

High society

A pessimistic fantasy, or a dystopia of the most important director of our days. Robert Pattinson has long dreamed of playing for Claire Denis - and she decided on the first English-language film in her career about a group of criminals sent into space to serve humanity. Dany, who makes an intimate and highly controversial movie in all genres - from family drama to bloody horror - read the true story of Americans in the provinces who refused to tax criminals for free and asked for public compensation. Violators of the law, in their opinion, had to fulfill their duty to society.

Claire Denis formulated this duty in her film fantasy: on an autonomous space station, where young prisoners die from overwork one after another, Monty (Robert Pattinson) lives and reflects on the meaning of life, about whose misdeeds and guilt before humanity we know nothing. He - a loner in this cosmic link - must figure out how to get humanity energy from a black hole, occasionally recalls earthly life and becomes the father of the miracle of a cosmic fertilization experiment. Heroic in non-heroic, stupor and alienation in the eyes of a young man - Monty has few lines and action. His entrance into the void is a parable of unbearable loneliness and death, where, according to an absurd decision, it is the outcasts of society who are thrown into open space to meet the incomprehensible.

Life

A successful biopic of the remarkable documentary filmmaker Dennis Stock - the legend of the golden period of the American magazine Life. Like any professional in creative work, Stoke is regularly tormented by topics for the next photo series, when a promising actor and favorite of all women - James Dean, comes into his field of vision.

Having woken up famous after the main role, Dean rushes on a motorcycle along the highway, does not take care of himself and endlessly yearns for his home, rejecting his father and the provincial farm on which he grew up. Stoke travels with Dean to his homeland to find an actor without a blaze of glory in the most familiar and oppressive circumstances. At the same time, Robert Pattinson and his hero are at the center of the story: the actor perfectly captures the image of a laconic, but attentive person, without whose gaze it is impossible to imagine photography as the art of observation. After reading a lot about Stock and Dean's real-life friendship, Pattinson played the legendary photographer, explaining how visual art takes over when words are utterly helpless.

Rover

A meditative road movie about unexpected male friendship at a time when the world is falling apart. In reality, where only rude men and scorched earth are left, one person loses everything that he has: a dusty car is hijacked by petty bandits, leaving one of them behind his brother. He is played by Robert Pattinson.

The laws of "Mad Max" work in their space: a lot of blood, shooting and struggle for survival - all the more surprising is their sudden trust, against which the circumstances and rules of local life are turned. The masculine detective turns into a fraternal drama about affection, in which bonding violence and a common criminal case for two sometimes brings together, then separates desperate people who have become victims of general lawlessness. Robert's first festival appearance at a new stage in his career.

Lost City Z

Again, Robert Pattinson, as a friend of the protagonist, steals the show. The story is based on real events: a young British soldier with a small group sets off in search of the legendary city in the Amazon, where, according to rumors, among tropical diseases and gnats, one can find an ancient civilization, a huge fortune and the inhabitants of El Dorado.

While the scientist is openly laughed at in the geographic community, the support of adjutant Henry Kostin (Robert Pattinson) makes the journey possible. The expedition went missing - neither wealth, nor lifetime fame, nor posthumous fame, its participants received. Pattinson again plays the role that comes out for him almost best of all - a doomed, but devoted to his work, proud and principled, without whose steadfastness and support the embodiment of any brave or even fantastic idea ahead of its time cannot do.
