According to Reuters, the California District Court ordered the German company Bayer to pay a $ 2 billion fine to a married couple who filed a lawsuit after they were diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma as a result of using the herbicide Roundup.

Alberta and Elva Pilliod indicated in the case that the development of the disease could be caused by glyphosate, which is in the composition of the weed control. According to them, they applied the herbicide from 1975 to 2011, unaware that the substance could be dangerous. The couple received their diagnoses in 2011 and 2015, but now they are in remission.

At the same time, Bayer, which bought herbicide maker Monsanto last year, said the product was not hazardous to health. They deny all charges and emphasize that the plaintiffs' illnesses developed long before Roundup was used. In this connection, they intend to appeal and will try to appeal the verdict of the court.

This is not the first lawsuit filed against Bayer, according to BBC News. So, in March of this year, a San Francisco court ruled to pay eighty million dollars to a man who also contracted cancer due to carcinogens in the herbicide. In total, more than thirteen thousand similar lawsuits were filed in the United States against the German concern.
