Calvin Klein is at the center of a scandal after it featured Bella Hadid kissing virtual model Lil Miquela in a new ad campaign. Social media users accused the brand of queerbaiting and offending the LGBT community.
Many noted that using same-sex relationships to sell clothing is unacceptable exploitation and offensive to all members of the community. They also emphasized that the Bella Hadid video was an example of a failed attempt to represent the LGBT community in advertising.
“The campaign was made in order to fight against established norms and stereotypes in advertising. In this particular video, we explored the blurry line between reality and imagination. We understand and recognize that showing someone who identifies as heterosexual in a same-sex kiss can be perceived as queerbaiting,”Calvin Klein said in a statement.
Representatives of the brand apologized to those who might offend the video, and said that their new campaign #MyCalvins is built around freedom of expression for all people, regardless of gender and sexual orientation.
