IN THE RUBRIC "NEW NAME" we talk about promising newcomers: musicians, directors, artists and other creative people - that is, everyone whose name appears more and more often on the pages of magazines, in social media feeds and in our conversations, and who is clearly on the verge of great success.
who is it: 20-year-old transgender model, LGBT activist and star of the new HBO series Euphoria, in which she stars as a transgender teenage girl Jules
The other day on HBO showed the first episode of "Euphoria" - the most anticipated series of this summer. The leading role in the teen drama about addiction, sex, slut-shaming and other difficulties of modern growing up was played by singer and actress Zendaya, who has long become famous both on television (Disney Channel) and in films (new Spider-Man franchise). In Euphoria, she was paired with a previously unseen transgender model and LGBT activist Hunter Schafer (in everyday life she prefers the pronouns "she / her", and in official documents - the neutral "Mx.").
The modeling career of young Hunter, who began the transition at school, can be envied by many: she went to the shows of Dior, Miu Miu, Rick Owens, Helmut Lang, Maison Margiela, Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs, Ann Demeulemeester - and this is an incomplete list. “Given my circumstances and background, I couldn't even imagine that a modeling career would be possible,” Schafer tells The New York Times. In 2016, Hunter spoke out against North Carolina's discriminatory initiative, which effectively prohibited transgender people from using their comfortable latrine. She also published a poignant essay on the i-D website. The bill was rejected, but since then in the state debate around this topic has not stopped anyway, so Hunter continues to engage in activism.
