A new study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, shows that plant-based diets reduce the risk of heart disease in middle-aged people. Scientists have previously concluded that a diet of vegetables, legumes, nuts and whole grains reduces the likelihood of developing heart failure by 40%. A vegetarian diet reduces the risk of dying from heart disease by the same percentage.

The lead author of the new study is Casey M. Rebholz, PhD, assistant professor of epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore. The researcher and her colleagues collected data from 12,168 middle-aged people who participated in the atherosclerosis risk study from 1987 to 2016.

The results showed that the likelihood of experiencing cardiovascular disease (myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure) is 16% less in people who eat mainly plant-based foods. Among those who had the most plant foods in their diet, mortality from all causes was reduced by 25% and cardiovascular mortality by 32%. At the same time, Rebholz noted that it is not necessary to completely abandon animal products.

Mariell Jessup, chief scientist and medical officer of the American Heart Association, was not involved in the study, but also notes that the diet should not only consist of plant foods, but also be rich in nutrients and not high in sugars, sodium (salt), cholesterol, saturated and trans fats. For example, opt for unprocessed fresh fruits, vegetables, and grains over fries and cauliflower and cheese pizza, which, while plant-based, are low in nutritional value and high in sodium.
