According to The New York Times, about thirty people have been hospitalized in the United States in recent weeks with respiratory diseases that have arisen as a result of taking nicotine or marijuana. As doctors suspect, vaping could be the cause of the malaise - perhaps the patients added drugs bought on the street or falsified liquids with substances contained in marijuana to their devices. The publication also mentions that the patients are adolescents.

The incidents took place in the states of Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin and California. Most of the victims had difficulty breathing, some complained of chest pain, vomiting and other symptoms. According to The New York Times, each victim reported using electronic cigarettes or other vaping devices for several weeks prior to hospitalization. But it is not yet clear whether this particular type of smoking was the cause of the disease, and if so, which component was responsible for it.

The publication cites a recent study by Duke and Yale Universities. Researchers studied some e-liquids from the American brand Juul and identified chemicals - so-called acetals - that can irritate the lungs and cause damage if inhaled. The e-cigarette company disagreed with the results, noting that scientists only hypothesized, but did not investigate, how Juul's products affect real people.
