The President of the Recording Academy, which awards the Grammy, Deborah Dugan was fired after six months in office. According to the executive committee, the reason for this was the ineffective leadership of Dugan herself - it was proven through two investigations by persons independent of the academy. In particular, we are talking about the "destructive campaign" in the media, which was initiated by Dugan to "disrupt" the Grammy ceremony. In January, ten days before the event, she was sent on paid leave due to inappropriate behavior at work - allegedly many employees of the academy complained about Dugan. Meanwhile, the woman herself names another reason for dismissal.

According to Dugan, the executive committee decided to fire her due to the fact that she pointed to violations within the organization itself, namely, harassment, dishonest voting procedures and conflicts of interest between members of the academy. In addition, she reported harassment from influential lawyer Joel Katz, who is closely associated with the organization. She also said that her predecessor Neil Portnov was accused of raping the singer.

“I am disappointed with the latest development, but not surprised, considering how the academy works with those who disclose illegal activities. Is anyone surprised that the alleged investigations do not speak to me or address more serious claims of conflict of interest and voting irregularities? " Dugan said.

She added that she was invited to the presidency of the academy to carry out internal reforms and improve the organization. “Rather than trying to change this corrupt institution from within, I’ll try to hold accountable those who continue to do what they do, change the voting process at the Grammy for the worse and discriminate against women and people of different backgrounds.” Dugan stated.

She replaced Portnov as president of the academy in August 2019 - he held this position for about seventeen years.
