HEADING "ROOM" dedicated to the place in which a person spends most of the time. It can be any space: a huge kitchen where the hero works and rests, an art gallery that has become a second home, or just a room in a one-room apartment that turns into a bedroom or an office. The main thing is that here a person is able to focus on business and not feel like a participant in an endless race. In our new issue - Katya Kindras, co-founder of the Mirstores and Beaded Breakfast brands.

We live in the Nagatino-Sadovniki area in a tall new building. This is the apartment of my husband Lyosha, when we met, it was just being renovated. A year later, we created our first brand Mirstores, and a year later we moved into this apartment - almost immediately together. This was in 2016.
The location is convenient if you have a car. Along the embankment along the Moskva River, you can get to the Third Ring Road in five minutes and the Garden Ring in fifteen minutes. Of course, if there are no traffic jams. We don't really like the area itself, although in the last couple of years it has begun to grow overgrown with infrastructure. It is not very green, there is generally nowhere to go. But we like our apartment very much!
The bookcase was made built-in - based on Hitchcock's "Rope": “We love to read, we buy a lot of books on art, history, fashion, investment and finance. There are not enough shelves anymore, so we are thinking about where to go next. We keep the lower shelf empty now, because our daughter sweeps everything off of it. We left only the coasters from LoftDesign and the photographs in the frames - ours and our parents'
Katya's favorite view throughout the apartment is the kitchen island, especially in the evenings.
Lyosha was planning renovations even before my appearance in his life, inspired by his favorite films. For example, Hitchcock's "Rope" - where, if you remember, there was a soft sofa and luxurious panoramic windows in the center of the living room, and cool art hung on the walls. There was also a cool bookcase built into the wall, which looked very neat. And the main reference for the kitchen (which is important, because in our apartment the living room and the kitchen are combined) is the kitchen from the House of Cards. I am very glad that all this aesthetics turned out to be very close to me, I remember how Lyosha and I exchanged screenshots from the series and discussed how beautiful the laconic white panels look in the Underwoods kitchen and what coziness the dim light above the work surface creates. It's great that we managed to implement most of the ideas, and as a result, we got such a bright, elegant and such our apartment.
The difficulties that we had to face were mainly related to the rough work of the repair: for example, in some places the walls were imperfectly made, and the parquet board was laid before the putty and painting of the walls - and as a result, we washed out white dust from the dark wood of the floor six months after the repair. But all this was a long time ago, besides, for sure, everyone who makes repairs themselves, for the first time, is faced with this.
Most of all I like the windows here. Perhaps, as in "Rope", they play the main role in our interior. They are the first to be noticed by everyone who comes to visit us for the first time, and those who come to an already familiar apartment like to stand there. We do not have curtains, and every day, in any weather and at any time of the day, we see a large trolleybus park and behind it a horizon of high-rise buildings, and in winter we glue homemade paper snowflakes to the windows, like from childhood, and they delight us almost to the end Martha. In the kitchen area, along the windows, there is a large dining table, at which I like to work on my laptop. During self-isolation, sitting at this very table and seeing beautiful spring sunsets, I made the first samples for our second beaded jewelry brand, Beaded Breakfast.
Together with the turntable, which Katya had long been given by her father, records began to appear in her life: “Now there are a lot of them. Most often, Alla Pugacheva, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald are sounded. We put them on on weekends when we make pancakes for brunch"
“I painted a picture based on the works of Gunther Forg when we bought a sofa and a coffee table: I wanted a bright spot. Art books live in the closet, but we often take them off the shelves and leaf through them for inspiration. My favorites are about David Hockney, Toulouse-Lautrec and Pollock"
There is no need to talk about what I would like to redo, because it is impossible. We would like the apartment to have one more room - a nursery, but this issue can only be resolved by moving. Now our daughter Pasha (Paul's full name) is only one year old, and she sleeps in a small crib in our bedroom, but when she grows up, she will need her own space. Also in our area there are not very cool schools, but education is important for us. While we are not looking for other options, but enjoying life here. I think everything has its time.
The corner with the turntable is the most secluded in the apartment: “We decorate it with pictures that we liked. Here is a reproduction of Chagall, a shot from "Cylinder" with Fred and Gigi's dance and drawings of our friends"
The most photogenic area in this room, according to Katya, is the corner of the sofa with a piece of abstract painting: "I often torment Lyosha to take a beautiful picture of me here, but so far I have not posted a single photo from here on Instagram."
About furniture and paintings
There are many things with history in our apartment: we have a lot of modern furniture, which we literally hunted for (for example, the Crate & Barrel bar, which we thought to order from abroad, turned out to be the only one for the whole of Moscow in a store in Afimoll). vintage - a TV stand, which I accidentally saw in the Draeznya showroom on Trubnaya and bought it right away; a coffee table with a slanting shelf - from the "Kamorka", which was painted according to our order; the Jindřich Galabala dining table is supposedly from the 30s of the XX century and our latest find is a large Nicoletti Salotti armchair from 1970s Italy, which we at Maison Osin pulled over with a white bouclé fabric. And all the art on the walls was written by me or we together with Lesha.
In general, painting is my hobby. In 2012, as an editor at Buro 24/7, I went on a press tour to Milan and there I met an illustrator, artist and a stunningly charismatic girl Yana Frank. We talked about art, and I shared with her my fear of being misunderstood with my drawings, to which she said to me: “What are you afraid of? Spoil a couple of canvases? " After this conversation, I threw all doubts out of my head and drew a lot at home. When we started dating Lesha and he had his first birthday, I gave him my version of Cy Twombly's red flowers, writing on canvas “Not Cy Twombly. Katya Ukhlinova ". Now we have “Not Gunther Forg. Katya Kindras "(this is my favorite, hanging over the sofa, I call her" Dogs for a walk ")," Not Basquiat. Katya Kindras "(on it Basquiat's signature man, as from a rock painting, Pasha calls him" uncle ") and a couple of my works. Lyosha says that I am engaged in rigid postmodernism, but I like it. We painted one painting - pink, with prints of flowers - together. It is very large, almost one and a half to one and a half, and our guests really like it. We hung it in the dining area and it became the center of attraction for family and guests.
Both me and Lyosha's favorite objects in the house are paintings. Not only large ones: in the far corner of the living room above the curbstone, where there is a record player, there is a small bright abstraction, at from Lyosha's friend, several reproductions, including by Marc Chagall, and several drawings by Lyosha's niece Lisa - when she was still in kindergarten, she drew for we have several beautiful paintings with flowers.
“When we want to change something, we distribute the zones in the apartment and change the decor. My zone is this buffet. I found a picture on Pinterest with a round mirror and trays, I really liked it.I added my grandmother's candlesticks, statuettes from Lesha's grandmother, a few candles in jars - and you're done."
At the end of January, Pasha turned one year old: “On this occasion, they bought a lush bouquet of mimosa, invited loved ones and made several photos on the Polaroid. When the mimosa wilt, they divided a large bouquet into small twigs and kept them in these crumbs-vases"
About the atmosphere of the apartment
I feel so comfortable at home that it seems as if it is pleasant to do everything here, you can work and relax. But most of all, this room - a living room with a kitchen - is suitable for hosting parties. We came up with this tradition in 2016: we began to gather all our friends before the New Year, in order to meet in the most hectic time of the year, have a drink, chat, dance, laugh and just guaranteed to see everyone. Our apartment remembers a lot of such parties: four traditional New Year's Eve, with a playlist on the theme of "Christmas" (as a rule, we do them on the penultimate Saturday of December), an afterparty after our wedding in 2017, our common anniversary with Lyosha (we have him birthdays with a difference of a month, and we somehow gathered friends to celebrate our common 50 under the songs of childhood - Zemfira, Natasha Koroleva and "Disco Crash"). What we just did not do at our parties: played mafia, met friends of friends, learned from my sister who came from Thailand to beautifully cut pineapples and much more - our most grandiose party met 39 guests. In 2019, I met friends with a huge belly, we also laughed that right after the party we would go to the hospital with all the guests. And in December 2020, we missed the covid party for the first time, but hopefully the tradition will resume this year. I love the day of the party: when guests come and follow to the kitchen to the island, everyone already knows each other, hugs and pours champagne into glasses, clink glasses cheerfully and exchange news.
“This graceful chandelier is from Ikea. And the service with an ornament of birds and flowers is from the GDR, it went to Lesha from his grandmother Zina. We love and cherish him very much"
A large table for eight, according to Katya, “the best thing that could happen to our kitchen. We have a large family, many brothers and sisters, and they often come to visit. It's great when there is a place to accommodate everyone."
About inspiration and favorite stores
It's just that we don't "surf" furniture sites, only if there is a specific task. For example, it took us a long time to figure out how the turntable should be positioned: it stood on a pedestal from Ikea, and we didn't really like it. Since the beginning of autumn, we have searched on various sites, on Avito and on Instagram for tall cabinets and dressers - and we found a dresser of our dreams after the New Year in Zara Home, and immediately placed an order. It was the same with the area to the right of the sofa: there was an empty wall for a very long time, and during self-isolation we wanted interior variety and we put a floor mirror from the dressing room there. We liked how it enlarges the space, so we ordered a special oak-framed wall mirror for this area, and placed a vintage table with an oblique shelf under it. When Pasha grows up and stops sweeping everything from horizontal surfaces, we will put there a vase with fresh flowers or albums with photographs.
Sometimes you want to update certain parts of the interior, for example, the surface of a bar or a sideboard in the kitchen - and we distribute the zones among ourselves, everyone looks for references on Instagram and Pinterest and later shares ideas. We buy decor from Zara Home, H&M Home, from some local brands. A couple of years ago we discovered Veter Shop - a fair with small brands, where there is a very cool decor. We also adore vintage vases and tableware and are happy to buy from Sufrazhill and Savello Select. We haven't bought anything abroad yet, but Lesha occasionally stumbles upon amazing vintage furniture stores (the latest finds are from Switzerland and Denmark). We dream of moving into a bigger apartment someday and filling it with objects that we will truly fall in love with.In general, I believe that the secret of a comfortable apartment is that it be made with love.
