The article gives several ideas on how to make many useful things from CD disks: a box, a candlestick, a photo frame or a roof covering.
Many have accumulated old CD disks, which become obsolete or become unusable. Of course, you can throw them away, but it is better to store them, and at one point use them for a global project, for example, to cover the roof. And from a small amount, you can make interesting crafts.
Original roof covering made of discs
If you have a lot of such material, then you can make a roof covering from old discs. It will literally look brilliant, and even will not let moisture into the room due to the correct arrangement of the elements.
The discs must first be attached to a wooden base, such as plywood, and then to the roof. For laying one square meter, 120 pieces are needed. They need to be fixed using this technology.
Place the discs end-to-end in the first row so that there are no gaps. In the second, stagger relative to this so as to overlap the holes in the first. The third row will also be staggered relative to the second, with overlapping holes. This is how a scaly roof is made from old discs.
Those who have accumulated a lot of unnecessary vinyl records can also implement a similar technology, but using them.
However, back to the idea of what can be done from old disks. When laying them, make small holes. Secure the parts with small nails or screws.
Come up with a pattern that will help you lay such an impromptu tiled roof. You can place discs with both matte and glossy side up.
If you do not have enough discs or records, then you can lay them not on the roof of the house, but on the visor.
See how the English artist Bruce Monroe came up with the idea of using old discs. According to him, he wanted to enhance the natural beauty of the garden in this way. It took him 65,000 discs to make the water lilies.
It is unlikely that you will have that much in stock, so you can make small water lilies or decorative elements for your home.
Hard curtains from disks with your own hands
They will not need to be washed, it is enough to brush off the dust sometimes. Such curtains will decorate the room, add positive notes to it.
The manufacturing process is extremely simple. For it you will need:
- CD disks;
- paper clips;
- drill.
Using the latter, punch holes in the two discs, placing them closer to the outer edge. Now join these 2 discs with paper clips, attach the third to the second in the same way, and so on. You can make the curtain rectangular or the way it was made in the photo. For each of the top three rows, 6 discs were used, for the fourth - 5, for the fifth - 4, the sixth took 3, the seventh 2, and the last eighth consisted of only one disc. In total, to make 2 such curtains with your own hands, you will need 66 discs, for one 33 will be enough.
Such curtains can be easily fixed on the cornice, for this you need to walk along the markings of the larger inner circle with a sharp clerical knife, and then squeeze it out with your fingers to enlarge the hole. You can also use a drill for this purpose. In the same technique, holders of curtains for the bathroom are made from old discs.
You can also make curtain tiebacks using the same material.
Place a smaller round object on top of the disc. Holding it, trace it with a knife, then cut along the markings with scissors.
The resulting ring is decorated with a satin ribbon, which just needs to be wrapped around it.
You can decorate the curtain tiebacks with satin flowers made using the kanzashi technique, and attach the rings to the curtains using sushi sticks. They can be painted or also rewound with a satin ribbon, gluing it.
Beautiful crafts from CDs
Even from very old discs, you can make a New Year's toy using fragments untouched by time. Cut out pieces from this material, which then glue to the Christmas tree ball like a mosaic. Wipe off excess glue with a cloth.
In the same technique, you can decorate the collar of a blouse. For him, the disks are also cut into fragments. Then they need to be glued to the fabric.
To make a frame for a photo with your own hands, prepare:
- thick cardboard;
- PVA glue;
- CD disks;
- scissors;
- black paint in a tube with a fine tip.
Make 2 identical rectangles out of cardboard. At the first, draw a circle or a 4-sided inside, cut out. Glue this cardboard with an inner hole onto the second solid one. Glue together only 3 of their sides, leave the top ones free. Through the resulting gap, you will put a photo or painting into a frame.
Cut the discs into separate pieces with scissors. Apply PVA to the photo frame - its small area, attach the resulting pieces here.
Let your art dry, then fill in the gaps with tube paint. When it dries up, then you can use the frame for its intended purpose.
And just one disc can be used to make a candlestick. For it you will need:
- glass balls;
- 1 disc;
- super glue or other designed to work with these materials;
- candle.
The photo shows the stages of work, which clearly show how do-it-yourself candlesticks are made.
Pour balls over the outer contour of the circle. Glue the second row on top of these, placing its elements in a checkerboard pattern. Thus, create 4 chains. It remains to attach a candle with hot wax and you can plunge into the romantic atmosphere.
Jewelry box of own production
It is made from the same material. Here's what it took to create this needed thing:
- 3 discs;
- the cloth;
- synthetic winterizer;
- needle with thread;
- scissors.
Take a piece of paper, compasses. Draw 2 circles. The inner one will be equal to the diameter of the disc with a small margin - 12 cm, and the outer one - 20 cm. In this case, the height of the box is 8 cm, you can change this value at your discretion.
Divide both circles into 16 equal sectors. To make it easier for yourself, first divide in half, then into 4 parts, then into 8 and 16.
Transfer the pattern to the fabric or draw on it right away. You need to make 2 of these blanks from the canvas. Now sew along the markings, making 16 stitches from the outside to the inside. Put a synthetic winterizer in the pockets formed. Sew up the top of the disc box.
If you want to make handles, then weave a braid from three strips of fabric.
To make a lid for the box with your own hands, fold two canvases of fabric in a pile, place on a disc, draw with chalk, cut out with a 7 mm seam allowance on all sides. Place these fabrics over the top and bottom of the disc. If you want the lid to be soft, then cut out two circles of padding polyester and cover the disc first with them and then with fabrics. Stitch around the edges with a blind stitch.

How to make an owl from old discs?
Try to make such a funny owl out of this material. It will become a decoration of the room or an original gift.
To work, you need this:
- several disks (10–12 pcs.);
- simple pencil;
- scissors with soft rings for the fingers so as not to rub the calluses;
- Scotch;
- foil;
- durable glue;
- yellow and black cardboard;
- ball pen.
Take two light-colored discs, cut a fringe along their edges with scissors.
Cut 2 circles out of yellow cardboard; they should be larger in size than the holes in the discs. Cut 2 smaller black circles out of thick black paper, glue these bird's pupils on yellow ones, as shown in the photo.
Cut out the beak, 2 eyebrows and 2 paws of the owl from the dark places of the disc.
Do not discard the remaining pieces. You need to draw leaves on them and also cut them out. These elements are useful for decoration.
Glue the center of each disc over the eye. Glue these two discs together, attach the beak to them. Take another light disc, cut a fringe on it only on one and the opposite side. This is the head of an owl. Glue the blank of the eyes and the beak on it, relying on the photo clue.
To make the owl further, take 5 light-colored discs.
To save energy, do not completely trim the edges with fringe, only use it where necessary. This moment is shown in the photograph. Start gluing them together as follows.
Cut out two wings from a dark disk, arrange them with a fringe, glue them, eyebrows, paws of a bird into place.
Place the pencil on the foil, wrap it in this shiny sheet.
Glue the pre-cut leaves from the discs to the perch. You have got such a wonderful owl, which will certainly bring good luck to the house.
Coasters for cups made of CD discs
These kitchen utensils will keep the tablecloths from staining with tea drops and will brighten the table. They are done very simply.
Take:
- disks;
- the cloth;
- ballpoint pen;
- synthetic winterizer;
- a needle and thread.
For one stand, cut two blanks from fabric and one from padding polyester. Remember to leave hem allowances.
Now put a synthetic winterizer on the wrong side of the fabric, sew two layers together with a basting stitch. Place the synthetic winterizer on the CD, tighten the thread, tie two knots. Put another circle of padding polyester and fabric on top of the disk, sew the blanks, as shown in the photo. You can attach a loop on the side to hang a DIY cup holder from it.
Interesting country ideas from old disks
