Even if you preferred wooden moldings, they still need to be painted or varnished. This will protect the material from mold, mildew and insects.
Materials and tools for painting the ceiling plinth
To choose the right paint for ceiling skirting boards, you must first of all take into account the material from which they are made. For painting polyurethane, foam and polystyrene products, do not use paints containing white spirit and other solvents.
The following compositions are considered the best options for them: latex, water-dispersion, acrylic. In addition, glaze is used to decorate fillets. These are analogs of the stain, which is used to impregnate wood. With their help, you can give skirting boards different textures: gilding, dirty stone, patina, aged wood, malachite.
Wooden fillets are not so finicky. Alkyd or epoxy paint, oil enamel, stain (alcohol, water, solvent-based), varnish (phenolic is recommended) are suitable for their processing.
The paint can be purchased ready-made, and if the desired shade is not there, then in any hardware store, choose the desired color scheme and ordinary white paint. Then you can determine the intensity and saturation of the color yourself.
In addition to paint, you will need tools to apply it. There are a few things to keep in mind here. You will need different brushes to paint the ceiling plinth after attachment. Additional special brushes or tampons may be required to apply glaze.
If you plan to paint the fillet before installation, then you can purchase a coloring composition in a spray can. This will significantly speed up the processing process. However, keep in mind that after fixing the joints will be visible, and in any case they will have to be putty and painted. Consider how confident you can spray paint over the seams neatly. If the walls and ceiling are still to be finished, then you can paint the molding with the same method.
When working, masking tape, rubber spatula, gypsum putty or acrylic sealant may come in handy.
Preparatory work before painting the ceiling plinth
Preparation for staining depends on the fillet material. We prepare foam and polyurethane products in the following order:
- Put putty on a rubber spatula and cover all the joints between the elements and at the walls. Press the tool tightly, but moderately, so as not to damage the fillet structure. Put putty on each seam from top to bottom.
- Using a damp sponge, remove any remaining filler.
- In the corners, cover up the cracks with your index finger. We work with gloves.
- After drying, rub the roughness with fine-grained sanding paper.
For wooden skirting boards, preparation depends on the method of fixing. If they are fixed on self-tapping screws, deepening the caps, then the putty is selected to match the color and the places of fasteners and joints are smeared. It is important to treat the wood before installation with antiseptic compounds to protect it from rotting and insects.
Ceiling plinth staining technology
This process is very easy and fast. At the same time, you do not need to have special skills, but it is advisable to know some of the nuances that will facilitate the work and improve the result.
We paint according to the following instructions:
- We remove dust from the coating with a sponge or vacuum cleaner. It is advisable to prime the coating at this stage to prevent hydrophobicity of the material and improve adhesion.
- If necessary, cover the joint with the ceiling and walls with masking tape so as not to spoil the finish.
- Apply the first layer to the ceiling plinth with a brush and wait for it to dry completely.
- Apply the second layer. This procedure is recommended when, after the first, unevenly stained areas, gaps and darkening remain. Also a second coat is needed for more color intensity.
If the tape cannot be used due to the possibility of damage to the finish, then use a wide cardboard. You can apply it in places of painting.
Creating decorative effects on ceiling plinths
When painting skirting boards for the ceiling, you can give the product the following effects:
- Malachite … This effect is created with green glaze. The best tool for application is a swab made of scraps of leather or leatherette. In the process of painting, we adhere to the following action plan: apply the coloring composition to the fillet with a swab, create streaks with a brush using a feather, paint the resulting streaks with a light glaze. It is not necessary to buy glaze a few shades lighter to color the veins. You can slightly dilute the original composition with water.
- Patina … To give this texture, a glaze of the Tahire color is used. We paint the fillet according to the following instructions: apply glaze to the coating along the edges, and leave the middle unpainted, shade the paint line with a rag or sponge, paint convex elements with a brush using dark Humbert glaze. After such processing, the embossed details will look brighter and lighter, and the deep ones will look more contrasting and richer.
- Dirty stone … For this effect, we use glaze of the same colors as for the previous one - Tare and Humbert. However, in the process of applying, we adhere to a different plan of action. Apply evenly glaze Tare to the ceiling plinth. We shade the paint with a brush in such a way that light strokes are clearly visible on it. Apply dark spots using Humbert Glaze. We shade the paint over the entire surface of the fillet. We make small streaks with a dark glaze, removing the excess composition with a sponge. When the layer is completely dry, bronze glaze can be applied to the embossed contours of the molding for additional decoration.
- Aged tree … It is best to choose brown glaze for this purpose and apply it to the white molding. A brush with short and stiff bristles is ideal for work. We work in the following sequence: we apply glaze on the ceiling plinth with strong pressure to create texture, with a thin brush, using dark paint, draw wood fibers and flaws in the array on the plinth. It is advisable to finish painting individual details for plausibility after the main glaze layer has dried.
- Gold … This texture looks luxurious in combination with the chocolate color of the walls. Also, it will perfectly fit into interior design in Victorian or classic styles. Dip a thin brush in silver, gold or metal glaze. When choosing a shade, be guided by personal preference and combination with individual decor details. Wipe the brush with a rag until it is semi-dry. We apply the bristly part to the convex fillet elements and slowly move along them. With such painting, only the embossed fillet will be "gilded". When choosing a shade of glaze, you need to take into account its combination with the main color so that the "gilded" texture looks appropriate and aesthetically pleasing.
