Advantages and disadvantages of wallpaper for painting walls
Wallpaper for painting walls is made from many materials, their advantages depend on the properties of the ingredients, but there are positive aspects that are the same for all models:
- The canvas is capable of smoothing out small irregularities in the wall (for example, cracks).
- Painting walls with heavy wallpaper is less expensive than painting plastered walls due to the lack of surface finishing.
- The canvas is treated with special substances, so the product is not afraid of moisture. When glued, the sheets do not deform or shrink.
- The material is vapor and air permeable, which guarantees the absence of mold behind the sheets.
- The material contains no elements harmful to humans.
- Heavy wallpaper has sound insulating properties.
- Many models tolerate sunlight well.
- It is easy to replace a damaged blade in a dry state; it is enough to tear off any corner and apply a load to it. Pre-soaking before dismantling the sheets is not required.
- Minor damage can be masked with paint or putty.
- The wallpaper can be repainted many times, the main thing is that the texture remains visible.
- On the construction markets there are models of various colors and textures, the most demanding user will find a product to his liking.
- The paint for the wallpaper is selected to match the color of the furniture or the main elements of the interior.
- Walls with painted wallpaper can withstand up to 2000 wet cleanings.
The disadvantage of wallpaper is its high cost. Some models of glass fiber wallpaper are not recommended to be glued in children's and bedrooms due to the presence of small mineral fibers in their composition.
The main varieties of wallpaper for painting
You can apply paint only on paper, non-woven wallpaper or glass wallpaper, with special manufacturer's marks. After production, the canvas is rolled into rolls, its dimensions usually differ from standard models. The shops have sheets 17x0.53 m, 25x1.06 m, 33, 5x0, 53, 125x0, 75 m. Larger sizes reduce the amount of waste, and the number of joints on the wall decreases. If you do not know how to choose wallpaper for painting on walls, check out the features of the most common types of coatings.
Paper wallpaper
Paper canvases are considered cheap samples. They are made up of two layers of paper and a filler of sawdust in between, so they are thick and dense. Thanks to the middle layer, the sheets have a beautiful embossed surface. Paper wallpapers are produced with or without drawings on the front side. The images are embossed on special equipment. Usually paper wallpaper is white, less often there are models of light pastel shades.
Wallpaper without patterns can be quickly pasted on the wall. After finishing, the partitions become visually seamless and uniform. The wallpaper is impregnated with a special liquid that does not allow steam and water to enter the sheets. Users should be aware that paper wallpapers are fragile and may sag or stretch over time. The coating is painted 5-7 times.
Non-woven wallpaper
Non-woven wallpaper is the most common of all paint coatings. The material consists of a non-woven base and an outer vinyl covering. Flizelin is a non-woven material made of cellulose and textile fibers with a polymer binder. During the production process, the material is heat treated, the front side becomes embossed, and the opposite side remains smooth.
Vinyl is quite fragile, and it crumbles very quickly without protection, so after gluing the sheets must be painted. Another option is to purchase pre-painted items. Wallpaper is available in white or colored. Painted wallpaper can be repainted with a darker shade over time.
The material withstands significant mechanical stress, it is difficult to crush and break. Often, such wallpaper is used to paste over the walls in new buildings, which can shrink and deform - the wallpaper is able to keep cracks. They are more capable of hiding wall defects than paper ones.
The disadvantage of non-woven wallpaper is the fragility of the front layer. It is recommended not to place furniture, which often moves, close to the walls.
A few tips for choosing non-woven wallpaper: do not purchase thin samples, when glued, they can stretch, which interferes with work; an inexpressive texture after several paints will not be visible on the wall.
Glass fiber
The material is made from glass filament, which is smelted from dolomite, lime, quartz sand and soda. Glass wallpaper stands out for its special strength, does not burn, otherwise it has properties similar to other types of wallpaper for paint. The coating is highly wear-resistant, the walls can be washed even with a brush. Recommended for use in offices, hotels and other public places with a large number of people, where walls are often washed.
The width of the panel is wider than that of other similar materials, which reduces the number of joints on the walls. The front side of the canvas has a specific relief surface in the form of matting, cobwebs, rhombuses. Wallpaper can be glued no more than 10-12 times, otherwise the paint will cover the pattern of the panel.
The choice of paint for decorating wallpaper on the walls
The paint for wallpaper is chosen depending on the functional purpose of the room, the type of wallpaper and taking into account the wishes of the person. The paint can be purchased in the original packaging or ordered from the seller in any volume with a shade of your choice. On a special apparatus, the ingredients are mixed, and the customer's favorite color is obtained.
Each type of wallpaper is covered with its own paint. Non-woven and paper wallpapers are painted with water-based paint, glass wallpapers - with latex or acrylic. At the first painting, the surface is covered with two layers, with an interval of at least one hour. After a few years, only one layer is applied.
Water-soluble wall paint products are cheaper than other paint products and can save you a lot of money. However, such solutions are easily erased from the surface and are afraid of moisture.
The most popular paint for wallpaper is acrylic. It is produced only matte, but the number of shades is huge. Acrylic paint is not afraid of water, it is highly resistant to abrasion, so it can be used in any premises.
Latex paint is characterized by high performance characteristics, which provides a high quality coating. It is the only paint that produces a glossy finish. The gloss level is indicated on the mortar box.
When calculating the number of cans of paint, we suggest focusing on the following values: 1 liter of paint covers 10-12 m2 non-absorbent wallpaper and 7-8 m2 absorbent.
A correctly chosen color and texture of paint has a beneficial effect on a person and forms a comfortable atmosphere in the room. When choosing a paint, use our tips:
- Matte paints with a rough texture are used in large rooms and halls.
- Semi-matt paints give a low sheen and look good in bedrooms and areas with few people.
- Walls in children's rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms are painted with semi-gloss paints. They give a good glare and wash quickly. To obtain a quality surface, the walls must be carefully leveled.
- Glossy paints are used in dark rooms. They are extremely reflective, so glare will hurt your eyes in bright rooms.
- Walls in the kitchen and bathroom are covered with satin paint, it is durable.
- The beige and red range is recommended for calm people, cold tones are preferable for people with a mobile psyche.
- White color visually increases the size of the room, erases the corners, but the design can seem boring.
- Blue gives the room a strict look, and also visually expands the space.
- Light green color soothes, lowers blood pressure.
- The dark green color of the canvas and light furniture create a cozy atmosphere in the living room.
- Yellow color has a positive effect on well-being, creates a joyful atmosphere.
- It is recommended to paint the walls in several colors, then the interior becomes stylish.
- Cover small rooms with light colors (white, lemon), they expand the boundaries of the room.
- Vertical stripes on the sheets increase the height of the room.
- Cloths with large pictures reduce the area of the room, with small ones - they increase.
Choose your paint responsibly. It is recommended to buy half a liter of paint first and paint a small section of the selected wallpaper. After drying, see how it looks in different lighting conditions. With a satisfactory result, you can buy material for the entire area.
Types of glue for wallpaper for paint
On the building materials market there is a huge selection of adhesive solutions for wallpaper. At first glance, you can get confused in them, but not everything is so complicated. In most cases, manufacturers produce adhesives for a single type of coating.
Features of the choice of glue:
- The adhesive composition should provide good adhesion of heavy wallpaper to the walls, so the usual one for vinyl sheets will not work.
- Paper wallpapers are fixed only with special vinyl glue. It dries for a long time and allows you to re-glue the sheets with a recent fixing.
- Glass fiber is placed on glass fiber glue. It is designed for heavy sheets and provides a solid wall anchoring even in damp rooms.
- Oscar glue is often purchased for glass wallpapers with colored pigments. Pufar, Kleo Ultra adhesives are frost resistant, they can be used anywhere.
- Some samples, for example, Virtual Aqua Plus, are sold with an adhesive layer, before use, the wrong side is moistened and pressed against the wall.
- Non-woven wallpaper is glued on a special non-woven glue. It is not recommended to use products that do not interact well with interlining.
Please read the properties of the mortar carefully before purchasing. If possible, choose samples with the addition of antiseptics that will protect the wall from fungus.
Usually glue is released dry and sold in packaging or by weight. The amount of material for work can be calculated based on the calculation of 250-300 g of the finished mixture - per 1 m2 wallpaper. The exact consumption is indicated on the packaging.
It is not difficult to prepare the mixture; it is enough to dilute the powder in a certain proportion in a bowl of water. The solution is prepared at the rate of 200 g of dry mixture for 3-5 liters of water. A permissible amount of water is poured into the container and the powder is poured into a thin stream with constant stirring. After pouring out all the mixture, leave the liquid for 5-10 minutes. to swell and then stir again.
Preparatory work before installing wallpaper for painting
It is impossible to obtain a high-quality coating without special devices. Before painting the wallpaper for painting on the wall, stock up on the following tools:
- Find a fur roller for painting, and a brush for drawing.
- Pressing trowel for smoothing wallpaper, with its help squeeze air out from under the sheets.
- Soft roller for smoothing wallpaper seams.
- Wallpaper brush with soft fibers for smoothing sensitive wallpapers.
- A brush for applying glue to the canvas.
- Roller made of synthetic material for applying adhesive to walls.
- Painting knife for cutting wallpaper near floors and ceilings.
Before gluing the wallpaper, check the condition of the walls and prepare the place of work:
- Remove the old wallpaper completely from the wall by dampening it with water and leaving it to soak well. Use a spatula to remove the coating from the surface.
- Wipe the wall painted with water-based paint thoroughly with a damp cloth.
- Oil paint is removed from the wall mechanically, for example, with a drill with a special attachment.
- Fill up deep nicks and cracks on the wall with putty and prime the floor. In damp rooms, additionally saturate the walls with a fungicidal composition.
- On the floor, prepare a flat surface with a length slightly greater than the height of the wall of the room. Such a site can be found in the hallway.
- Thoroughly clean the floor in the selected area of dirt. Cuts of wallpaper for applying glue will be laid on it. You can also assemble a table from two trestles and a sheet of chipboard.
- In the cold season, install heaters in the room and heat it to a temperature of + 18-25 degrees.
- Take care of good lighting to ensure that the sheets fit together.
- Remove sockets, switches and other electrical accessories from the wall. Before work, turn off the electricity on the line that runs along the wall with the dismantled appliances.
How to glue paintable wallpaper on the wall
Decorating the walls with wallpaper for paint does not differ much from working with ordinary wallpaper, but the density and thickness of the sheets makes its own adjustments to the coating technology.
Close windows and doors in the room to avoid drafts. Air movement can cause the product to peel off the wall. Using a plumb line, draw a vertical line on the wall, which will serve as the base for the first cut. The line is best drawn near a window or in a corner.
Measure the distance between the ceiling and the floor on the wall in several places, increase the size by 5 cm. If there are no drawings on the canvas, cut the required number of strips from the blanks. If there are patterns, the stripes are cut off after pasting the previous piece, taking into account the location of the images.
Glass fiber is cut with sharp scissors or a breadboard knife. Care must be taken when cutting, as the fiber can crumble and get onto the body. It is advisable to wear a respirator while working with fiberglass.
Place the first sheet on the floor with the front side down. Brush the solution from the middle of the sheet to the edges, brushing well on the corners and edges. Paper wallpapers do not like a thick layer of glue, the sheets can tear. Fold the processed part in half. Apply glue to the other half of the wallpaper. Leave the panels to soak for the period specified in the instructions.
When gluing paper wallpaper, the adhesive is applied to the wallpaper and to the wall. The width of the area to be treated should not be much greater than the width of the sheet.
When working with non-woven wallpaper and glass wallpaper, the glue is applied only to the wall, which significantly reduces the operating time.
Unfold the top of the wallpaper, press it against the wall, aligning the edge with the drawn vertical line. At the top and bottom, provide a 2 cm stock of wallpaper. Smooth the wallpaper with a soft brush from the center to the edges and blow the air out from under the sheets. Gently lower the bottom of the folded wallpaper and repeat the gluing operation to the wall.
The next sheet is aligned along the edge of the glued one. The canvas is glued only end-to-end, the overlap joint will stand out on the wall. After gluing, go over the joints with a plastic trowel.
Remove the remnants of the glue immediately; after drying, it will be difficult to remove them. The corners of the room are covered in such a way that the wallpaper goes to the next wall by 2 cm. After a couple of days, trim off the excess wallpaper near the floor and ceiling.
When gluing, non-woven wallpaper can be glued parallel to the floor. This arrangement of sheets gives the room the perfect look.
Before wallpapering the walls for painting, check the evenness of the corner.
Wallpaper painting technology on the wall
After the wallpaper dries, a decision should be made on the need to paint the canvases, because many products look good anyway. In most cases, manufacturers recommend painting the walls immediately, with the exception of models that are processed during manufacture.
The most convenient way to apply paint is with a roller. The tool soaked in paint should move along the sheets and distribute the paint evenly. Do not roll over one place several times, wait until the first layer dries within 1 hour. No bubbles are allowed during staining. If they do appear, cut them open, roll them over and paint over the area.
Non-woven wallpaper can be painted in several ways. To obtain an unevenly colored surface, the sheets from the back side are coated with a water-dispersion latex paint before gluing, which will appear on the front side on a non-woven base. After drying, the panel can be glued to the wall in the usual way, and then cover the front side with the main color. As a result, we get a two-color wallpaper.
Another option for decorating walls with wallpaper for painting to obtain a multi-color coating: after gluing the wallpaper, the canvas is painted in the main color, and then the paint is removed from the embossed surface of the sheet with a sponge. The cleaned surface is painted in a different color. You can also paint the base wall in the desired color and glue the wallpaper on top. The non-woven is transparent, and the wallpaper will acquire a light shade of the painted wall.
Painting glass wallpaper is somewhat different from processing other types of paint wallpaper. The material absorbs paint well, therefore, before work, it must be primed with diluted wallpaper glue (50-70 g for 5-6 water). The primer is applied in a thin layer with a paint roller. After priming, the surface is painted in 2 or 3 layers. Paint consumption rate: 500 milliliters per square meter.
Glass fiber in the kitchen is covered with acrylic paint, which is easy to clean. When repainting, you can use paint with a deep texture, in which case the initial layer can not be removed.
