Wall-mounted stained-glass windows are installed in door or window openings, niches, interior partitions or made in the form of a panel. To ensure a long service life of a glass product, protecting it from accidental fall, only the correct installation technology will help. Our today's material is about the methods of fixing stained-glass windows.

Types of fixing stained-glass windows on the wall

The choice of the type of fastening of the stained-glass window depends on its location, weight, dimensions and the purpose for which it is installed. In this case, the possibilities of the existing structure should be taken into account as a basis for the installation. For example, to replace ordinary glass with a stained-glass window, a special groove is made along the perimeter of the door opening, which is filled with silicone, which ensures maximum contact of the new product with the base.

If it is not possible to use the existing structure as a "base", in this case the stained-glass window is installed using a frame, the material for which is selected taking into account the dimensions and weight of the stained-glass window. First, it is attached to the wall with screws, and then stained glass is fixed in its grooves.

In addition to using a frame structure, stained-glass windows can be attached to the wall using thin strips of a segmental section. As a rule, such fixation of decorative glasses is used in wall niches, in window and door openings.

A very simple way to fix stained-glass windows is to use brass strips. For example, if you need to install a product on top of the glass already in the window, in this case, brass strips are installed along the contour of the stained-glass window. After installing decorative glass, they are folded over it, tightly fixing the product and preventing it from shifting.

Another option for fixing a stained-glass window is to install it on "pelicans". This is the name of the special fasteners, which consist of two parts and fix the decorative glass both horizontally and vertically. Stained-glass windows, which serve as interior partitions, are fastened with the same elements.

Stained glass mounting technology on the wall

The preparatory stage of fixing the stained-glass window to the wall should begin with studying the place of its installation. First, it is necessary to make all measurements, determine the type of fastening of decorative glass, and then draw up a plan for installation work. Before installing the stained-glass window, all general construction or repair work must be completed. The place of its planned location should be cleaned of dirt, dust and debris. Then you need to mark the fastening points of the product or its individual elements.

The installation of a stained-glass window in a door block is carried out in two ways. Decorative glass, fixed in the canvas, can form a protrusion or be flush. In addition, the stained-glass window itself can act as a door leaf.

Fasteners are selected for the materials from which both the door block and the stained-glass window are made. When installing decorative glass in a wooden door block, nails and self-tapping screws are used. It is inserted into the grooves cut in the door leaf. The gaps are sealed with a special putty for stained-glass windows or removed with a sealant. In plastic doors, stained-glass windows are installed using glazing beads made of similar materials. Sealing of the structure is made using special materials that are produced for this purpose.

Clamps, pins, springs or profiles are used to fix the stained-glass window in metal doors. If the installation is carried out using a profile layout or glazing beads, then a technology is used that is identical to the installation of glasses in frame windows. The sequence of actions is the same.

The basis for the installation of such stained-glass windows is a double-glazed window, frame or frame structure. The double-glazed window is installed in a frame, which is pre-leveled taking into account its relationship with the horizontal and vertical plane of the wall. For leveling, special equipment is used.

After that, the stained-glass window itself is installed. It is fastened with plastic glazing beads. They are tightly driven into special grooves provided by the design. The denser their filling, the better.

When installing a stained-glass window in a wooden window block, the frame is first installed, and then the stained-glass sheet. It is fixed with glazing beads, and the whole structure is sealed with seals.

In frame-type systems, the installation of stained-glass windows is carried out in the same way. However, there is one difference: the installation of products starts from the bottom rows. If this condition is met, the structure will not sag.

Stained glass in the partition

Decorative partitions can have PVC or wooden insulating glass construction. The technology of installation of stained-glass windows here can be cable, frame or modular.

When using the cable method, anchors are installed on all supporting structures, that is, on the walls, ceiling and floor. Ropes are pulled between them. Then, the stained glass parts are mounted on the cables using clamps, and then they are fixed on the brackets with a locking screw. Using the clamps, holes are made for them in the walls. The tension of the cable system is adjusted with lanyards.

The frame structure is made of steel using welding. In this case, the stained-glass window is fixed using a special profile, which is most often attached to the floor and ceiling, less often to the wall. Sometimes these partitions are made entirely of glass. In such cases, the fastening of the stained-glass window is made using the "pelican" clamps.

Installation of a modular stained-glass structure in the partition is carried out using crossbars. They have a horizontal arrangement and are attached to the embedded parts of the connecting posts using self-tapping screws. The module sections are anchored to the floor or ceiling. Then a seal is inserted into the crossbar and the clamps are installed. After that, a stained-glass sheet is installed between the sealant and the clamps. Clips are installed on the clamps and additionally fixed with self-tapping screws. Caps are put on the racks and crossbars.

This is the best solution for decorating any interior. The method of installing decorative glass in a niche depends on its strength, size and weight. In addition, the operational load on the structure of the stained-glass window is taken into account. Particular care should be taken when installing large-sized stained-glass windows.

Installing decorative glass in a niche includes several stages:

  1. Measurement … At this stage, it is necessary to carefully examine the niche, make the necessary measurements, study its features and draw up a diagram of the installation of the stained-glass canvas.
  2. Preliminary work … They include cleaning the niche from dirt and dust, eliminating its irregularities and distortions, if necessary, painting the cavity or pasting it with wallpaper. Outside and inside the niche, you need to apply the markings according to the drawn up scheme, and when planning the backlighting, lay an electric cable.
  3. Stained glass installation … It should be carried out at the stage of completion of finishing work. At this stage, the frame structure is installed and the decorative cloth is fastened in a suitable way.
  4. Installation of additional elements … It includes the installation of seals to ensure the reliability of fastening glass and lighting fixtures.
  5. The final stage of work … It provides for checking the functionality of the stained-glass window, its compliance with technical requirements and safety. In addition, at this stage, the premises are cleaned and the stained-glass window is cleaned from contamination that appeared in the process of working on it.

The installation of a stained-glass window into a niche can be carried out with a movable and stationary fastening. With a movable mount, it is carried out inside the frame or on hinges. Fastening inside the frame provides for the manufacture of a wooden or metal sash, which is inserted into a wall niche.

In the case of hinge mounting, monolithic stained-glass windows (filler, film or painting) are fixed in the form of sashes by drilling special holes in them for installing hinge mechanisms. In this case, the fittings will experience significant loads during operation. Therefore, when choosing, you should pay attention to its reliability and quality.

Stationary fastening of the stained-glass window provides for the use of holders "pelican", decorative screws or installation of decorative cloth inside the frame. The first option is the most popular. One part of the pelican mechanism is attached to the wall with a dowel, then decorative glass is applied to it and the second part of the fastener is screwed on. When installing a stained-glass window in this way, the most even wall is required.

When using decorative screws, the stained-glass window should be 5-7 cm larger than the niche size. Four holes for fasteners are pre-made in it. With a large size and weight of the stained-glass window, the holes for the self-tapping screws may be larger.

The method of fixing decorative glass inside a frame made of metal or wood is universal. It allows you to mask small flaws in measurements, slight curvature of the walls and give the stained-glass window a finished appearance.

Illuminated stained glass on the wall

With a stationary mount, it is possible to install a backlight that can emphasize the beauty of the glass mosaic. In addition, it can be used as an additional source of illumination.

When installing a stained-glass window on a backlit wall, we recommend that you abandon the use of incandescent lamps or various economy lamps. All of them are not able to provide the necessary lighting, they will distort the shades of colored glass and quickly become unusable. The best option for lighting wall stained glass windows is to use fluorescent, LED, neon and halogen light sources.

Stained-glass window illumination is carried out in different ways:

  • Internal lighting provides for the location of the light source behind the stained glass.
  • Edge lighting illuminates the perimeter wall.
  • Exterior lighting uses light sources located in front of the decorative glass sheet, and is great for embossed and volumetric stained glass windows.
