There are many materials used for cladding a bath, wooden board remains one of the most popular. It performs two tasks at once - insulates the walls and gives them a colorful appearance. It also allows them to breathe, preventing mold, mildew and condensation. In this article, we will look at step-by-step instructions for decorating a bath with a board.

Types of boards for finishing a bath

Boards can be edged and unedged:

  • Edged board … This wood is made from logs, peeled from the sides of the bark and carefully polished. In most cases, its width is twice the thickness. Edged boards are used in almost all types of construction - to create finishes, frames, roofs and other building structures.
  • Unedged board … It is a sawn tree with bark on the sides. The surface is uneven and jagged. Edges can be partially sawn off or not sawn off at all. Most often, such wood is used for outdoor types of work, where the appearance of lumber is not important. But it can also be used for the inner lining of the bath - in this case, before installation, you will have to process the wood yourself.

The choice of wood species for bath cladding

Each type of wood is endowed with its own shade, texture and health effects. Deciduous and coniferous trees are used for the production of boards. It is recommended to trim the steam room with deciduous trees, and the recreation rooms with conifers.

Wood of the following deciduous species is used for the bathhouse cladding:

  1. Linden … Decorating the bath with linden board is the most popular option. This wood is easy to install and retains its beautiful shade in high humidity conditions. Linden can be touched even at high temperatures without the risk of getting burned. In addition, it smells good and has healing properties.
  2. Alder … This breed is characterized by the presence of tannins, which provide clean air in the room and protect it from mold and bacteria. At high temperatures, alder releases substances that have a positive effect on the system of the heart and blood vessels, and also have an anti-inflammatory effect.
  3. Oak … Contains tannins, like the previous wood species. It is very durable and flexible. When heated, it releases useful substances that help eliminate fungi and unpleasant odors. But oak has one drawback - its surface is difficult to polish to the required smooth state, since its wood is a little rough.
  4. Ash … Ash wood is flexible and not very dense. However, it does not crack and has the best health benefits. In addition, ash is one of the most beautiful wood species. In various photos of decorating the bath with an ash board, you can see that this wood is very light, clean and festive.
  5. Aspen … This type of wood is endowed with low thermal conductivity, which prevents burns at high temperatures. It does not crack or dry out. Aspen also has a pleasant color and is easy to process. The only drawback is the rapid loss of natural color.

The bath can be sheathed using the following coniferous wood:

  • Larch … It is very durable and has a low thermal conductivity, which is important for a bath. It emits a subtle and soothing scent even at low temperatures. Larch is distinguished by its beautiful color, but, like oak, it is rather difficult to process.
  • Spruce … Endowed with a pleasant color and smell. Spruce wood is very soft and easy to work with. Spruce boards are recommended to be installed in rooms that are not intended for high temperatures. This is due to the release of a large amount of resin.
  • Cedar … Perfect for decorating a shower or rest room. It has a unique color, specific aroma and antiseptic properties. Cedarwood releases resins and essential oils that help calm and relax. This type of wood is the most expensive.
  • Pine … This wood is the most demanded material for decorating a restroom. It is highly undesirable to install it in the steam room. It also has a pleasant hue and produces volatile substances that eliminate microbes in the surrounding area.

Internal finishing of the bath with a board

The plating process consists of several steps and does not take much time. First, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work, then install the wooden frame, lay insulating materials, and then mount the finishing boards. At the end, the surface of the boards is covered with a protective varnish.

Examine the surface of the walls carefully. If you find large differences (more than 2 mm per 1 m), you will have to level them with putty or plaster. Then treat the walls and ceiling with a special bacteria-repellent agent.

This is followed by the stage of laying communications - electricians, water supply and everything that needs to be hidden behind the panels of the boards. Only after carrying out these works can you start purchasing boards, fasteners, wooden bars, metal suspensions, as well as steam and heat insulation materials. Take all metal parts from galvanized iron, otherwise rust and streaks will appear on the walls over time.

After purchasing the boards, put them inside the bath and leave them there for two days - they should get used to the climate of the room. If you purchased unedged boards, you will have to do a little work with them before sheathing. Finishing the bath with an unedged board involves preliminary cleansing of the bark, which can be done with an electric planer, and requires high-quality grinding of the material. Use 80 sandpaper first, then 120.

For the construction of the lathing, use wooden blocks. Treat them with antibacterial agent before installation. Select the section individually, based on the thickness of the insulation. Cut into pieces 100 cm and 50 cm long.

Place the metal hangers in rows at intervals of 30-40 cm. Pay attention to the distance between the rows - it should be 40-50 cm. Mark the places on the walls for mounting metal hangers. Drill holes, drive in dowels and fix the hangers.

Attach the bars for the frame to the suspensions. Start the first row with a long bar, the second with a short one. The lathing should be flat and in the same plane, so check each row with a vertical level. If you find large differences, place a spacer under the bars.

Fasten the bars of the same row not too far apart. Thus, air will circulate between the rows. Around windows and doors, fasten the bars vertically along the perimeter of the slopes at a distance of 30 mm from the edge.

Installation of boards inside the bath

Before sheathing the bath with a board, you should install heat and vapor barrier. Place thermal insulation material between the rows of the frame. For these purposes, mineral wool is often used, but it rather poorly tolerates conditions of high humidity. Foam glass is ideal - this material is not afraid of moisture, insulates the room well and creates good sound insulation. When using foam glass, a vapor barrier is not needed. But if you are used to doing everything according to the rules, you can install a vapor barrier. Let her canvases overlap and glue together with tape.

If necessary, cut the planks to the desired length. The material should be fixed to the prepared frame using finishing nails or special clamps. The advantage of the latter is that they are not visible. The installation of boards for the bath room must be done vertically or diagonally so that the water does not stagnate with the strips of honey, but flows down. In this case, the frame bars should be perpendicular to the boards.

The finishing starts from the corner. Set the first plank with a cut into a corner and secure. After that, move along the perimeter of the room to be finished. Pick up the finishing board in the docking corner in width and cut to size. At the end, do not forget to apply a protective layer of a specialized composition (varnish, stain, oil, protective wax) to the boards. In the future, take care of the material with care - do not use solvents or abrasives. Over time, it is necessary to renew the protective coating layer.
