Such animals are similar to Spitz dogs. Although there are not many of this type of dogs in the Mediterranean, they are still northern dogs.
The first mention of such pets occurs in the second century BC. They were mentioned by the ancient Greek historian Xenofond of Athens. Presumably, such dogs sailed on the ships of the ancient Greeks.
