What is Jute Filigree?
Some are not yet familiar with it, so let's dwell on this issue in more detail. The poet Vladimir Sergeev dedicated a beautiful poem to this art. He calls the patterns openwork, similar to those that frost sculpts on glass.
The word "filigree" comes from two words. The first filum stands for "thread", the second granum stands for "grain". This name reveals the meaning of an ancient art form. Then the silver, gold or copper wire was cut by craftsmen into threads, from which individual elements were twisted to make a beautiful ornament.
No wonder the second name of filigree filigree. After all, this is exactly how the word "twist" sounds in the Old Russian language. And now there are workshops in which objects are created using metal filigree. But not everyone has a thread made of precious metals, so jute filigree is very popular.
After all, the main source material used in this fine art is jute cord. Not everyone knows that it is made from a plant of the linden family. Jute grows in eastern countries, in:
- China;
- Bangladesh;
- Egypt;
- India;
- Algeria.
Even in ancient times, people learned how to get jute fiber, weaved a rope from it, made rough clothes, and young shoots and leaves were eaten.
The jute fiber itself is obtained from the root of the stem. With the help of sickles, this part of the plant is cut, the raw materials are extracted and soaked in the river. Until now, manual labor is used here, since a mechanized device for this type of activity has not yet been created. After soaking in water, the fibers must be dried in air for several days, after which the technical material is taken to the factory, where it is processed.
Now that you know how the original product is made, you can appreciate the jute cord by creating fishnet objects from it.
Jute filigree - patterns patterns
If you do this needlework for a long time, you will be able to come up with various patterns. For beginners, it will be useful to learn about the basic elements of filigree.
Here they are:
- The ring is created by giving the cord a rounded shape.
- A half ring is a half of a ring.
- To make a cucumber element, you need to evenly pull the ring to the right and left, press here with your fingers to mark sharp corners.
- A pear is made in much the same way as a cucumber, but one of the sides should remain rounded.
- The tooth is similar to the English letter V.
- You will make a checkmark as follows. Cut the thread to the desired length, fix its lower end with the finger of your left hand, and make a small loop on the upper one.
- Do the wall in much the same way, but twist the top loop several times to create a beautiful curl.
- The double curl is similar to the English letter S, but both ends are more curled.
- The grass lives up to its name, it consists of two stems and two twisted tops.
- The rattle looks like a bird hovering in the distance.
- To make a curl, find the middle of the thread and fold it to the right and left, and twist the ends slightly.
- The snake is obtained by sequentially bending the thread, while making turns up and down.
- The petal really looks like this part of the plant.
- The tee is made from three elements. The right and left are identical, and the central one is executed strictly vertically, has a rounded shape.
- Greens are made from a piece of jute thread, which must be tightly twisted in turns.

Jute filigree for beginners
Salad bowl
To make such an openwork salad bowl, take:
- jute rope;
- transparent glue and PVA;
- scissors;
- form for the template;
- plastic wrap;
- knitting needle.
For beginners, it is better to print the weaving pattern you like, put it on the base, place polyethylene on top, use such a template. Perform curls according to the pattern or do arbitrary. In this case, petals in the form of a flower are laid out in the center of the dish. We decorate them with other weaving elements, such as a head, walls, placing them inside and outside the petals.
First, arrange the bottom of the salad bowl, then move on to its sides. Using the elements presented above, create petals, flowers, various curls from a jute cord.
When laying the thread, do not twist it, but place it as it was in the skein. Put one or two smaller sizes inside each petal, make more curls to make the final object denser.
When finished, leave it to dry. If there is a lot of glue, remove the excess with a soft cloth. Now you need to paint the plate with a brush or spray paint. When this composition is dry, you can remove the product from the base and admire it.
You can buy natural jute cord at the store or dyed it to make a box out of it. The next master class will reveal the secrets of this simple work.
Casket
To make a box, take:
- jute cord;
- leaflet in a cage;
- transparent glue such as Titanium;
- wide tape;
- transparent file;
- awl;
- tweezers;
- small scissors.
Place the tape on a piece of checkered paper and outline this base with a pencil. Put a point in the middle, it is easy to find it with a pair of compasses or cells.
Place this blank in a transparent file and drip some glue into the marked center. Place the end of the thread here, fix it, start rolling it clockwise in a spiral. Decorate a small area, grease the next one with glue, continue this manipulation with the thread.
Thus, close all the space previously outlined on the tape, it will also come in handy for us to make the side of the product. You can draw patterns yourself that will show off on this part of the box or use the presented ones.
It is enough to make a photocopy, cut out and glue it with tape on a reel from it.
When making the bottom of the box, do not cut the cord. Make a few more turns with it and glue to connect the bottom of the product to its side. Now you can cut the thread, wind several rows of the rope at the top.

Apply glue to a small area of the template, attach the beginning of a large cord here, a medium cord on it, and a small one on top. You will have such a pretty curl.
When making elements of jute rope on the side of the box, make sure that they touch the top and bottom at the same time, holding these two parts together. When the whole pattern is completed, make the lid in the same way as the bottom of the box. You can also decorate the top of the lid with beautiful curls.
Leave the product to dry completely.
To make the box more durable, dilute PVA glue in water in a 1: 1 ratio, and cover it inside and out with this solution. You can stick multiple colors at the same time. Roses made of fabric will look beautiful here.
When the PVA is completely dry, you can use the product, gift it or keep it for yourself to store all sorts of useful little things in the box.
How to make a pumpkin night light - master class
We suggest you take a break from creating ornate patterns and start decorating a cozy lamp. It is also made from jute cord, but it is designed in a simple way.
Here's what you'll need to create such a pumpkin night light:
- jute rope;
- PVA glue;
- balloon;
- scissors;
- dye;
- Christmas tree garland.
Inflate the balloon, place it in a container to give stability. Pour PVA glue into another vessel. Dip a jute rope here, wind it around a ball.
A hole must be left at the top. When the glue on the rope is dry, pierce the ball with a needle and remove it through this hole. Color the resulting blank. It is best to use for this car paint in a spray can of gold or silver.
If desired, paint the garland using a darker color. Insert it into the pumpkin, after which you can turn on the night light.

Unwind a little jute cord, bend it in half, put the resulting loop on the work surface. To the right and left of it, lay one more loop.
This is how she is, jute filigree. For beginners, this master class should not seem difficult. Lay one more loop below, but in such a way that the next lower loop goes over the upper one. To do this, the end of the cord must be inserted into the previous loop.
After completing a fragment of the desired size, glue it to the left of the sidewall, the second to the right, glue the edges of this large fragment.
While gluing the jute cord to the top and bottom of the box, make the following weaves to fill this side of the garment with the pattern.
Now decorate the rest of the sides in the same way. To make the product more durable, do not forget to lubricate the jute cord with glue.
To make a casket lid, glue the tin lid with jute rope. Then put a dot in the center of the workpiece, drip glue here. Twisting the rope clockwise, firmly attach one loop to the other. Fill in the space of the tin lid and then the corners.

Wrap a thread on wooden skewers, pre-lubricating it with glue. Connect all these elements in stages to form the base of the lampshade for the box.
Glue the top just made in the center. If you don't have a tin lid, use cardboard.
Decorate the joints with a jute braid.

How to make a bracelet, headband using the jute filigree technique?
To make them you will need:
- jute cord;
- glue;
- beads;
- scissors;
- tweezers;
- plastic bezel;
- old bracelet.
If you do not have a base for the bracelet, then you can use a semicircular object of a suitable shape. It needs to be wrapped in cellophane. Weave a pigtail from the jute cord. Covering with glue, attach it to the prepared base.
