Our ancestors also necessarily equipped the steam room with a small window under the ceiling. The advent of electricity and forced ventilation devices made it possible to do without an opening. However, in our time, many are returning to old traditions. Consider the advantages of using a window in the steam room and its installation.
The need to install a window in a steam room
Despite the fact that there is controversy about the advisability of installing a window in the steam room and some owners argue that it contributes to additional leakage of heat and steam, there are lovers of steam even with an open window.
The equipment of the window opening will allow the room to dry faster after bath procedures, which will significantly extend the operational life of the wooden elements. Volley ventilation is much more effective than gradual ventilation. It is also convenient if you need to quickly reduce the temperature.
In addition, the window in the steam room provides natural light. You can take a steam bath during daylight hours without using lighting devices. The window does not give the feeling of a closed space, and therefore even claustrophobic patients can visit such a steam room.
Sauna window manufacturing technology
Manufactured window designs can be found in their respective stores. However, in order to save money and if you have free time, you can build it yourself. To do this, you do not need to have carpentry skills, you must clearly follow the instructions and adhere to our recommendations.
Selection of material for a window in a steam room
Despite the growing popularity of metal-plastic profiles, the best option for a steam room is traditional wooden structures. They have excellent performance characteristics:
- Environmental friendliness … The tree does not emit toxic fumes when heated. This is a completely natural material.
- Heat and moisture resistance … The window can withstand the effects of high temperature and humidity, as well as their drops.
- Possibility of repair … If the structure is damaged, you can touch up, remove scratches, adjust or change the fittings.
- Aesthetic look … Wooden windows in the frame are in harmony with the overall design of the building.
For these purposes, it is recommended to use hardwoods (oak, birch, linden), since softwood releases resin when heated.
As for metal-plastic products, they simply do not withstand the effects of an aggressive environment. Under the influence of high temperature and humidity conditions, they can deform, emit an unpleasant odor, and crack. In addition, condensation accumulates on the plastic window in the steam room, which leads to decay of the lining under the opening.
Instructions for making a wooden window for a steam room
First you need to decide on the size of the future structure. Usually it is calculated in a construction project according to the principle of 0.025 m2 1 m3 the volume of the steam room. On average, this turns out to be 5% of the area. For example, if the dimensions of the room are 2x3 meters, and the height is 2 meters, then the window will be 30 cm in size.
When making a window to the steam room with your own hands, remember that the window sash must open. The installation of a "blind" structure does not make sense.
We carry out the assembly of the opening window into the steam room as follows:
- We assemble a frame by size from a profiled bar with a section of 12x4, 5 cm. We fasten the elements with waterproof wood glue or PVA using the "joint-to-joint" method with spikes and lugs.
- We make additional fixing of parts in the corners using galvanized self-tapping screws.
- We cut out eight blanks for a window sash from a bar with a section of 5, 5x4, 5 cm with lugs and spikes.
- We connect the parts into two frames using glue.
- We mill a groove in the frame, and a corresponding tenon in the sash, cutting out the cutouts at right angles.
- We process the resulting spikes and grooves using a hand-held router, setting it at a certain angle to cut the same workpieces.
- We make grooves for glass with a milling cutter, one by one on each part. In this case, be sure to monitor the preservation of the cutting angle.
- We carry out the initial assembly of the window frame and sashes.
- We check the evenness, angles and, if necessary, adjust the elements.
- We process butt joints with PVA glue and fasten them.
- We fix the frame parts additionally using self-tapping screws.
- We connect the elements of the sash with clamps.
- We insert glass 4 mm thick into the groove of the doors and fix it from the inside with glazing beads and nails. The external seams between the glass and the frame are treated with silicone sealant.
- We install wooden handles and galvanized hinges.
- We glue a self-adhesive sealing tape around the perimeter of the casement flap.
Please note that there should be no metal handles or latches on the inside of the wooden window in the steam room. Accidental contact in a heated steam room can cause burns. For glazing the inner sash, it is better to choose tempered glass.
Features of installing a window in a steam room
When installing a window, it is imperative to monitor the vertical and horizontal position. At the slightest deviation from the level, insufficient insulation or a breach of tightness, unpleasant consequences will arise. Heat loss will increase, condensation will collect.
Rules for equipping a window opening in a steam room
A suitable opening height in the steam room is at eye level of the person sitting on the shelf. At the same time, it must be equipped further from the heater with an exit to the west. The outer sash should open from itself, and the inner one - towards itself. It is recommended to carry out this procedure after complete shrinkage of the log house. Only then can a hole be cut and the structure installed.
In the process, you should adhere to the following order of actions:
- We mark the window opening using a laser level or a plumb line. Please note that the building level is not accurate enough for this process.
- Cut the hole so that the bottom side is in the middle of the log for the window sill equipment. For this purpose, you can use a hand chain or circular saw.
- We form a spike with a cross section of 5 cm on the lateral surfaces.
- We make markings and cut 5 cm deep, and then two more such cuts five centimeters from the edges of each side.
- We treat the opening with a protective antiseptic in two layers.
- After drying, we fill the jute tape with a construction stapler.
Please note that the heat insulator must be fixed as tightly as possible in the spike, since it is supposed to install a bar in it.
Casing installation technology for a window in a steam room
Before installing the window in the steam room, it is imperative to mount the casing. She will take on all the load arising from the natural processes in the log house.
We carry out work in this order:
- We prepare a beam with a section of 10x10 cm, 2-3 cm in height less than the opening.
- On one side of each part, we make a longitudinal marking, marking a depression 5 cm wide and 4-4.2 cm deep.
- We remove the middle between the cuts, forming a kind of groove.
- We trim the edges with a chisel and a chisel or hammer.
- We treat the surface with an antiseptic.
- We put the resulting casing details on the thorn in the opening. If necessary, tap the structure with a hammer.
- We attach a thick board from above to the sidewalls, which will be a kind of support for fixing the upper part of the window frame.
- At the bottom, we fix the board, which forms the basis for the equipment of the windowsill.
As a result, a gap will remain between the casing bars and the opening from above, which will prevent damage to the window when the frame shrinks.
Specificity of installing a window into a casing in a steam room
This technology is suitable for the installation of a window system in the steam room of a fresh log house. We install the window in the window and check the evenness of the sides, put a roll heat insulator into the gap on top. We attach the window box to the casing block using a galvanized self-tapping screw, making sure that the fastener does not pass through the block and is not fixed in the wall. We make slopes outside and inside, equip the window sill and fix the platbands.
To minimize heat loss, you can treat the back side with a special infrared spray, which will prevent the passage of infrared rays from the room.
It is not recommended to paint the window into the steam room, but it can be treated with antiseptic impregnation in two layers. External painting with acrylic composition of the window is also allowed to increase the operational life.

If you first take into account all the features of the selection of material, assembly of the window, installation of the casing and installation of the structure in the opening, then the work is easy to do on your own. Please note that for the durability of the window system, it should be periodically treated with protective compounds and exterior painting.
