Phototherapy: what is this procedure?
Phototherapy can also be called light therapy. In this case, the light rays are of artificial origin and are created using a special apparatus. Therefore, the light load is applied in certain doses and regularly. During treatment, a specific area of the skin is treated with wavelengths of about 550–650 nm. The rays easily penetrate the cells of the epidermis, the skin heats up and the metabolic processes occurring in it change.
When light rays hit the skin, they have the following effect:
- the feeling of itching is removed;
- the procedure is completely painless;
- the skin is not injured;
- unpleasant and uncomfortable sensations are eliminated;
- the process of skin regeneration is accelerated in the presence of abrasions and wounds;
- there is a lifting effect;
- the body's resistance to bacteria improves;
- the protective properties of the skin are improved;
- the amount of vitamin D gradually increases in the body;
- has an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin.
Application of phototherapy
The main areas of use for phototherapy are neonatology, cosmetology and dermatology. Phototherapy of the eyes is also widely used. During phototherapy, a certain effect is exerted on the retina of the eye. This procedure is recommended for the treatment of sleep disorders, depressive conditions, including some mental illnesses.
Phototherapy is used to:
- skin rejuvenation;
- treatment of various skin diseases - for example, acne, psoriasis, neurodermatitis, eczema, etc.;
- treatment and prevention of skin cancer;
- accelerating the healing process of wounds and trophic ulcers;
- helps the body recover faster after changing time zones;
- helps to improve the condition of the skin - it is recommended for rosacea, age spots, the appearance of premature wrinkles;
- used to remove tattoos;
- recommended for the treatment of jaundice in newborns - it helps to saturate the child's body with vitamin D.
The phototherapy procedure has a lot of positive qualities and is today used as a panacea for a variety of skin diseases, including for solving the problem of premature aging of the epidermis. This is an effective and completely safe way to solve many cosmetic problems.
Today, phototherapy is used in several areas. Depending on the purpose, the specialist must individually select the mode of light irradiation.
Phototherapy for newborns
Phototherapy is widely used to treat neonatal jaundice. In this case, the child is exposed to a powerful source of blue-violet color.
Phototherapy promotes the isomerization of bilirubin in the cells of the child's dermis, facilitating biotransformation for the successful natural excretion of bilirubin (for example, with feces or urine). At the same time, the level of bilirubin in the blood sharply decreases, thereby preventing its accumulation in the tissues of the kidneys and brain, minimizing the likelihood of damage to the central nervous system, as well as the development of renal failure.
The most common phototherapy device used during the treatment of jaundice in newborns is the OFTN-420 / 470-01 phototherapy device. This device is available in almost all maternity hospitals.
Phototherapy for acne and acne treatment
The use of blue-violet radiation supplemented with red light for the treatment of acne and acne is gaining in popularity. As a result of this effect, a photobiomodulation effect begins, antibacterial protection is activated, and the functioning of the sebaceous glands is normalized. After undergoing a full course of therapy, in about 80% of cases, there is a noticeable decrease in the number of acne and acne. But to achieve this result, systematic light therapy will be required.
Phototherapy for the treatment of eczema, neurodermatitis, psoriasis
The development of diseases such as eczema, neurodermatitis or psoriasis occurs in the case of autoimmune aggression of the body's lymphocytes against the cells of the epidermis. We can say that these diseases are allergic and often result from malfunctions in the immune system.
When exposed to ultraviolet radiation, the local immunity of the epidermis is suppressed, the inflammatory process of the skin is removed. During phototherapy of these diseases, irradiation with soft UV A is used when the wavelength range does not exceed 400 nm. Hard UV B can also be used - the wavelength range is less than 300 nm. If the disease is at an advanced stage, a combination of light waves is carried out, therefore, their range will be selected individually in each case, taking into account the condition of the skin.
Phototherapy to remove age spots
The therapy for the removal of ugly age spots is based on the effect of certain light pulses on the skin. As a result, a gradual process of destruction of melanin begins, which is the coloring pigment that provokes the onset of pigmentation.
After the phototherapy procedure is completed, the treated areas darken. Then peeling of the skin begins and its gradual renewal. As a result, its color is leveled.
Phototherapy for rosacea
Recently, in beauty salons and dermatologist's offices, the procedure of phototherapy not only of the face, but also of other parts of the body is increasingly being used in order to get rid of such an unpleasant disease as rosacea.
Thanks to the use of phototherapy, you can get rid of this unpleasant problem after the first session. During phototherapy, the skin is exposed to gentle light pulses of a specific wavelength. It is these outbreaks that remove the manifestations of rosacea even in those areas where there is very sensitive and thin skin - for example, on the cheekbones, lower jaw and near the nose.
Phototherapy technique
Depending on the purpose for which the phototherapy procedure is used, sessions are prescribed strictly on an individual basis.
There are several types of light therapy:
- broadband - a wide beam of light is used;
- narrowband - a narrow beam of light is used.
The phototherapy procedure is performed as follows:
- First of all, a consultation is carried out, the anamnesis, color type and level of the patient's sensitivity to light are necessarily studied.
- An examination of the lesion is performed, after which the specialist prescribes a course of treatment.
- Before proceeding directly to the procedure, the skin is treated, since it is imperative to remove impurities and remnants of cosmetics.
- The patient wears special safety glasses.
- An anesthetic and cooling gel is applied to the skin.
- After all the preparatory procedures are completed, the specialist proceeds to phototherapy.
During phototherapy, the patient experiences a slight warmth and an unusual tingling sensation.
Home phototherapy
To carry out the phototherapy procedure yourself at home, you need to purchase a special lamp. Home phototherapy is usually used in cases where there are frequent acne eruptions or when acne is in advanced form. To improve the condition of the skin, phototherapy procedures should be performed every day. In all other cases, it is not advisable to purchase a lamp and its cost will not pay off.
The most popular for home use are the following devices:
- light therapy ACTIVEBIO;
- apparatus tuning fork;
- Bremed BD7000;
- Minin's reflector;
- phytotherapeutic apparatus Dune-T.
It is important to take into account the fact that phototherapy at home can only be carried out after consultation with a specialist. The fact is that it is difficult to independently determine the correct supply of light waves, even if you carefully study the instructions attached to the device.
Contraindications for phototherapy
Like any other type of therapy, phototherapy has certain contraindications that you need to know about before starting the procedure.
Phototherapy is prohibited in the following cases:
- during pregnancy;
- in the presence of high photosensitivity of the skin;
- with thyrotoxicosis;
- while taking certain drugs that can provoke skin photosensitization;
- with porphyria;
- if tuberculosis has been diagnosed;
- in the presence of various eye diseases.
For a phototherapy procedure to be beneficial, it is best to entrust it to an experienced therapist. After completing a full course of phototherapy, you can get rid of various skin diseases.

I was treated with antibiotics for a long time. As a result, she became very thin, her face became somehow lifeless, gray, dull. Visually very aged. After I began to recover, I began to think about how to regain a healthy look. A beautician friend advised me to take a course of phototherapy at her clinic. I did not take this method of influence seriously. Well, what is it - to shine light bulbs on your face, and everything will become beautiful? But the result amazed me, and I took my words back. Phototherapy really works and helps! I have much fewer wrinkles, the nasolabial fold softened, the pronounced crow's feet in the eye area are gone. I also gave myself a massage. As a result, my skin tightened noticeably. This is not to say that it is similar to surgery, but there is an effect. And besides, it is achieved absolutely harmless and safe for the skin and health in general. I recommend phototherapy to everyone as an alternative to masks, serums and other expensive products. Cheap ones are absolutely ineffective, and expensive ones are not affordable for everyone, and light treatment is both beneficial and useful.
Oksana, 34 years old
My husband gave me Therapy Gold phototherapy device for my birthday. I began to study the apparatus and think about how to use it. I have a fatty T-zone, acne, blackheads, and all sorts of inflammation often appear there. Therefore, I decided to test the device in this place. I used it every evening for a month. This is an important condition - to use the device regularly and on a course, otherwise there can be no question of any results. Over the course of a month, I have achieved certain success: the work of the sebaceous glands in the T-zone has normalized, all rashes have gone, the skin has become more matte and fresh, the pores have narrowed. But phototherapy was not the only one who helped. In the summer, my husband was burnt in the sun, he was also "shone through", the burn quickly disappeared. My daughter has age-related acne - she also uses the device regularly. Even my mom treats age spots and wrinkles with light, and very successfully. Therapy Gold can be used on any part of the body at any age with various dermatological problems. My device has several modes of operation, so you need to carefully study the instructions for use.

I have been suffering from psoriasis for 5 years now, there are often exacerbations, especially in the cold season. Recently I discovered phototherapy using a PUVA device. It's amazing why I didn't know this method of psoriasis treatment before? In just a couple of months of regular sessions, my skin cleared by 90%, which previously was almost impossible to achieve with any drugs and procedures. Now elbows, knees practically do not differ from healthy skin. I did not observe such an effect even after ten days on the Black Sea coast. And even then, at sea, the skin was cleared, but as soon as I returned home to Nizhny Novgorod, there was immediately an aggravation - plaques, itching, peeling, horror in general. And now she has been in remission for two months now, no discomfort. Moreover, obvious improvements occur as early as 3-4 sessions. I am very happy and am thinking about buying myself a home phototherapy lamp, but I am wondering if it will be profitable for the money.
