If yes, then the Korat breed is for you! This wonderful cat, bred in Thailand, is simply made for luck in gambling, and more. To the people who live with these cats, in some unexpected way, happiness and monetary gains are attracted through life.
The origin of the Korat breed
Korat in the world of cats is one of the most mystical, incredible and unknown breeds. Even in the oldest manuscripts found in ancient temples in Thailand, there are references to these wonderful cats. The manuscripts are subsidized by the XIV century. In the distant past, and now, the Thais value Korat as a lucky symbol of luck, and unexpected luck. Animals have another name - shi savat. These words are translated: shi - light, and savat - money, or wealth. The literal meaning is the light of money. Korat got this name thanks to the king of Siam, to whom the animal was presented as a gift.
Perhaps the reason for the success of this breed is their striking appearance. The Korats have luminous, bright, emerald eyes, and a blue and silver coat. In their homeland, felines of this breed are a symbol of wealth for people involved in farming, and long-term happiness for lovers who marry. The newlyweds are given Korats as a gift after the wedding ceremony. The monks of the temples, with the participation of the Korat, perform ceremonies dedicated to rain and fertility.
If you can find this breed in Thailand, then it will be quite difficult to do it outside of Thailand. Even in their homeland, Korats are very popular and are considered a national treasure. They are not sold, but are preferably presented as a gift to highly esteemed persons.
The first Korats were brought to the United States of America, Oregon, by the family of a diplomat in 1960. There the first club of this breed was created outside Thailand. Five years later, it was officially recognized by the philological associations of the United States. It was from this city that the spread of the Korat began across Europe. Then these wonderful cats appeared at breeders in England, and in 1975 they received recognition from local clubs.
The variety is very rare in other countries: Canada, Australia, France, New Zealand. Also, sometimes, you can find Korat in the former regions of the CIS: Ukraine, Belarus. Now there is one nursery in the territory of the Russian Federation. How, at first glance, can you determine that this is exactly that bright and beautiful breed? On the first eye contact with the animal, the eyes immediately stand out. They are like two large saucers, huge, green, brightly glowing. Korat seems to be looking, and permeates you through and through. It seems that some incredible, mystical glow emanates from their gaze.
If you take a representative of this breed in your arms, you will be surprised how incommensurable is the visual perception. How can such a small, compact cat be so heavy? Females and males of the Korat breed have very little body fat, so they are much heavier. And as we know, muscle has more weight than fat. Their dense body can sometimes be compared to a tight spring. And of course, his silky gray fur coat with a blue tint, which shimmers in the sun when the animal moves, will not be left without attention.
Features of the characteristic behavior of the Korat
The Korat cat breed has a flexible, pleasant, but unusual character. Cats will find a way to the soul of everyone, regardless of whether it is a person or an animal. They are curious and cheerful disposition. It is better for the owner to keep everything under vigilant control in his home. Korats love to steal and hide what is bad. So, if you don't want to look for your things, keep order in your apartment. Do not leave an aquarium with fish open - they will definitely get in there.
Animals are very good at relieving stress and cheering up. Korats are active and mobile animals, they like to play with various objects. They are quite trainable, they can even be taught to bring a small ball. They consider the owner a part of the house, and literally follow him on his heels, such an intrusive Velcro. They just desperately need your attention, love, and affection.
These animals are best kept in pairs. When a representative of this breed is alone, he is very bored, and so he will have a brother or sister. Korats are leaders, so it's not important to get along with other animals besides felines. These pussies are very jealous. If they choose a pet for themselves, no one else will be allowed to him. Cats will continuously guard the object of their passion.
Korats have a very delicate and complex nervous organization. They do not like noise and are afraid of sudden movements. If animals are under such stress, they can get sick: become depressed, or meow loudly. Therefore, noisy, large families with very young children are not suitable for them. These cats get along well with single married couples, elderly and calm people.
Among the Korats, there are specimens that are both silent and loving to talk - how lucky you are and what you love. Talkative, they make very interesting sounds from a loud roar-growl to quiet, melodic rumbling and purring. If you accidentally close their brother in the closet, he will definitely find him and report it: "Master, free Vaska!" Korats, very well feel the state of people, know how to find contact with them, and even heal. The cat itself will come to you, and lie down on the sore spot. And what a relaxation their purring creates!
In America, one of the shelters for the mustachioed striped, lives a Korat named Jackie. The cat was incredibly liked not only by the employees of the establishment, but also by many other people of all ages outside of it. Experts noticed the peculiarities of Jackie's behavior, and he became the official healer cat. Its healing qualities are used outside the orphanage.
The cat is brought to the city, and he helps to cheer up its inhabitants. For example: At the local children's library, Jackie is the listener. Little residents are delighted with this, and even those who did not like books diligently read fairy tales to him.
When Jackie visits the retirement home, the room seems to fill with radiance. The elderly are happy, excited, and thanks to the Korat, like children, they rejoice in every new day that comes. The mustachioed purr is called cute, wonderful, and simply handsome. At home, in a shelter, a cat works wonders. He treats the staff and other guest cats. He was even listed on the staff lists on the orphanage's website. Korat became a full member of the specialized institution. Now this is his family and permanent home.
Korat exterior standard
- Body. Not large in size, with developed dense muscles. The sternum is wide. The back is smoothly curved. Externally, the representatives of the Korat breed seem easier than when you pick them up.
- Legs. Medium length, well muscled. In good proportion to the body. Oval feet. The paw pads are colored dark blue or lilac pink.
- Tail. Thicker at the base, tapering towards the tip. Slightly over medium length. Breeds with visible tail breaks are disqualified.
- Head Korat cats are in the shape of a heart, the eye sockets are located quite widely from each other. The head acquires this appearance due to the more convex part of the skull above the eyes and smooth transitions of lines from the muzzle to the end of a well-developed chin.
- Nose. There is a small depression between the forehead and nose. In profile, the bridge of the nose is slightly higher than the nose (like a lion's). The skin on the nose and lips is dark blue or lavender.
- Ears. Large, with a high set. It seems that the cat is listening to something. The auricles are wide at the base, with rounded tips. Outside there is a dense, short hairline, from the inside there are sparse long hairs.
- Eyes. Large, rounded, wide open. When you look at a Korat, this is the first thing you notice. The color ranges from bright emerald to amber with an olive tint. In young krats, yellow or light amber eyes are allowed. The final color of the eyeballs is formed by the age of two or four years of the animal's life.
- Wool. Slightly longer than short, sparse, no undercoat. The hairs are silky to the touch, fit snugly to the skin. The fur is shiny and can break when moving.
- Color. The standard is considered to be only blue with silver hair tips. All other color schemes or spots on the coat in the breed are disqualified. Tipped silver with blue shimmer all over the body is the only permitted standard for corat hair color. At the base of the hair it is lighter, towards the tip it is more gray. Adults should be evenly colored all over the body, without tabby markings. In adolescent kittens, tabby residues are acceptable.
Animal care
- Wool. Korat is easy to care for. A weekly brushing will be enough to keep his silvery coat shiny. Nevertheless, you need to get them used to combing, because difficulties can arise. It is better to comb the fur of the animal with a special thick natural bristle brush. So, she will polish the hair, and the coat of the korat will shine beautifully. Sometimes your furry pet needs to be bathed with special shampoos for shorthair cats. Some do not bathe cats, but simply comb them out with dry shampoos, or wipe them with wet wipes. Felines lick themselves every day - they put themselves in order. To prevent this licked wool from remaining in the stomach, the korat must be helped to remove it from the body. For this, special edible pastes are bought. You can plant the weed in a pot. The cat will eat it - another very good way to solve this problem.
- Ears, claws. The auricles are checked and cleaned monthly. This is done with the help of specialized lotions, or wipes purchased at pet stores. The nails should also be trimmed regularly. If you do not want to do this, get your pet a special claw cutter from a young age.
- Teeth. To prevent tartar formation and gum inflammation once a month, Korat needs to brush his teeth. The procedure is carried out using special toothbrushes and pastes, as well as napkins and sprays. You can give the cat treats that are designed to prevent the formation of plaque.
- Feeding. For an animal to be healthy, first of all, it needs to be properly fed. Everyone knows that natural food is always better, but it doesn't have to be monotonous. The diet should consist of: lean meat (poultry, beef, fish), fermented milk products, cereals, and vegetables. Korat must be regularly given various well-chosen vitamins. If breeders are lazy, or there is simply not enough time to organize such food for their pet, then it is better to buy only high-quality dry food and various specialized canned food. The fact is that the experts "conjured" over these dishes, take into account all the parameters needed by one or another animal. These feeds contain all the food in the correct balance, plus vitamins and minerals. And of course, the Korat must have free access to water. Only boiled or distilled water is used. Dishes for water and food must be separate and clean.
- Toilet training. When purchasing a Korat kitten from a nursery, usually a thoroughbred animal comes to the owner's house, already taught this procedure. If a small fluffy lump for some reason is not accustomed to the tray, then it will not be difficult to do this. It is enough to show the right place several times, and the animal itself will find the toilet tray by smell. If the Korat likes to walk on a sorbable litter, then the tray should have sufficiently high sides. After the cat, you need to clean up on time: the lumps of the sorbent are taken and thrown away with a special scoop, and the tray with the mesh is simply washed off with water.
- Walking. Since the Korats are afraid of sudden movements, loud noises, the street and public places are very stressful for them. You can gradually accustom the animal to being out of the house, at least in order to take it to the veterinarian or to a competitive exhibition without problems, when necessary. For the best convenience and safety of the Korat, you need to purchase a special carrier and a harness with a leash.
Corat cat health
Korat as a whole is a breed with good immunity and health, but there is one "defect". A small percentage of cats of this variety are prone to the genetic disease ganglesidosis - a defect in lipid metabolism. It is a neurological disorder.
In felines, the signs of the disease are manifested as follows: tremors throughout the body and limbs, coordination of movements is impaired, involuntary vibrational tremors of the eyeballs. The disease is practically incurable, and ends in death. If a kitten falls ill at the age of one and a half months, then by eight months it dies. Animals carrying the disease gene can be identified by passing DNA tests.
A small percentage of cats of this breed have gallstone disease. Korats do not like drafts and are susceptible to viral diseases. Every year, animals must be vaccinated to prevent the risk of contracting various ailments. Once every three months, the cat is given antihelminthic drugs. So, when purchasing a Korat kitten, deal only with reliable and decent breeders.
Tips for buying Korat kittens and the price when buying them
In Russia, there is only one nursery for these animals, the rest in the USA, England, France, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and most of all in Thailand. That is why the price of thoroughbred Korat is so high. Culling - animals with flaws in the exterior will cost much less. They can be purchased as friends and pets. Korats that will be used for breeding are very expensive. Cats are always worth more than cats because they can bear offspring. Approximate price for kittens: from 33,158.6975 rubles. up to RUB 66 317.3951 (500 $ –1000 $).

Korat, too sensitive to sudden movements, or loud sounds. This can be very stressful for them, and even lead to a depressive state. In this state, they can make loud, unpleasant sounds.
