Parquet varnishing technology

Parquet priming with a roller
Parquet priming with a roller

Before covering the parquet with varnish, its cleaned and sanded surface must be treated with a tinting or priming compound. It is applied in one layer with a roller or with wide strokes of a paint brush. Drying time for the primed floor is at least one day.

If, after sanding, small defects in the form of dents or fine cracks remain on the parquet, they can be eliminated using the ready-made Sadolin or Dulux parquet putty. Another option: you can buy a liquid for making a tinted mixture, for example, Vidaron or Lega Stucco, and combine it with the sawdust mass. As a result, you will get a putty, the color of which will be in harmony with the shade of the parquet blocks.

After correcting defects and drying the mixture, problem areas of the parquet should be sanded with fine-grained sandpaper No. 320-440 units. for a smooth surface. Remaining dust should be removed with a damp cloth.

The first layer of varnish is applied to the parquet floor using any of the above methods. It should be thin, the drying time is 24-48 hours.

Then the floor surface must be sanded again over a layer of varnish. At this stage, wood fluff is removed, which in the process of work lifted a roller or brush on the parquet. Sanding can be done with a belt sander or by hand with sandpaper. After that, you need to clean the floor from dust and wipe it with a damp cloth.

The next second and then the third layer of varnish should be applied to the parquet at intervals of up to two days, after which the finished coating should be left for 7-14 days to complete the polymerization. After varnishing the floor on the second or third day, walking is allowed on it.

If your parquet floor feels sticky after it dries, you can solve this problem by wiping the painted surface with soapy water. You can use dishwashing liquid to prepare it.

Important! Parquet wood of different hardness requires the application of an unequal number of varnish coats. Soft woods, for example, pine or spruce, it will be correct to cover in three layers, others in two.

Parquet varnishing defects

Elimination of varnish defects by scraping
Elimination of varnish defects by scraping

After applying varnish to the parquet, defects may appear on the finished coating, spoiling its appearance. Here is some of them:

  • The varnish layer does not dry … Possible reasons in this case may be: the remainder of old mastics after poor-quality floor preparation, the temperature in the room is below the permissible level, there is no ventilation, an insufficient amount of hardener in the 2-component varnish, an error in its choice, the floor surface is too cold. There are two main ways to eliminate this defect: in case of residual mastics and problems with the hardener, it is necessary to re-grind the floor. In the rest, increase the temperature in the room and arrange it for ventilation.
  • Whitish influx … Their possible cause may be the low temperature of the applied varnish or the floor surface with high humidity in the room. This defect can be eliminated by raising the floor temperature, then treating the whitish spots with a solvent and reapplying varnish to the parquet.
  • Peeling off the coating … The reason for this may be the incompatibility of materials during their layer-by-layer application, a painting tool poorly washed from a cleaning agent, poor-quality intermediate grinding. Remedy: if delamination is detected on a small area of the floor, the defect is corrected by grinding and applying a new layer of varnish. If the varnish swells on the entire surface of the parquet, the floor must be re-sanded and painted.
  • Small bubble formation … It may be due to such reasons: the varnish was too cold, the varnish layer was too thick, exposure to bright sunlight, a mistake in choosing a painting tool. Remedy: polishing the coating surface and reapplying varnish.
  • Wrinkle coating … It can arise from too fast layering of varnish and an error in the choice of solvent. Elimination of this defect is possible only if it is detected on a small area of the floor. If there are wrinkles on the entire surface of the parquet, the top layer of varnish should be sanded off. Varnishes based on artificial oil resins are most prone to wrinkle formation when they have an excessively thick layer, or there is not enough time between coats.
