Preparing a ceiling for painting is a complex, time-consuming process that consists of several stages. Each of them needs to be given special attention, since an incorrectly prepared surface after painting will not look aesthetically pleasing. After removing the old finish, it is necessary to wash off dust, dirt from the ceiling and assess its condition before further work.
The subtleties of repairing the ceiling before applying paint
If the ceiling has potholes and cracks, then they must be repaired with a special compound.
We carry out work in this order:
- We tap the ceiling to identify places with a fragile layer of plaster that needs to be removed.
- We check the joints with the walls using a screwdriver. If there are voids, we clean them.
- We prime the surface with a deep penetration compound with a brush.
- After drying with a narrow spatula, fill up irregularities up to 1 cm deep with multi-finishing putty.
- For depressions larger than 1 cm, we use a cement-based putty.
- We blow out the largest cracks with polyurethane foam.
Please note that after drying, the putty layer will shrink slightly, and the coating will be uneven. This defect will disappear with further alignment.
Rules for priming the ceiling for painting
In the process of preparing the ceiling for water-based paint or another type of coating, it is imperative to carry out a primer. The selection of the composition depends on the type of ceiling. For concrete, wood and plasterboard surfaces, different types of primer impregnations are used.
We carry out the work in the following sequence:
- With a brush we process the joints and corners in the room.
- Using a roller, apply the first layer of the composition to the ceiling with a slight overlap so that there are no dry areas. An extension bar can be attached to the roller for convenience.
- After drying, repeat the process a second time.
Double impregnation at temperatures from +5 to +30 degrees will improve the adhesion of the coating to the next layer. You need to proceed to the next stage after the primer layer has completely dried.
Specificity of strengthening the ceiling for the coloring composition
This procedure is, first of all, necessary for leveling the complex relief of the ceiling. It involves the use of fiberglass "Gossamer" and the appropriate glue.
The work is carried out in the following sequence:
- We glue the area with a size corresponding to one square of glass cloth.
- We apply and press the first piece. The technique is similar to wallpapering.
- Lubricate with glue the area of the second square with a three-centimeter overlap on the previous one.
- We glue the second piece.
- With a metal ruler and a clerical knife, we make a common cut in the place of overlap.
- We remove the excess canvas, squeeze and roll the edges near the cut.
- In this way, we glue the entire ceiling around the perimeter.
- After the glass cloth is dry, apply a second layer of glue.
The surface putty can be started after the adhesive has completely dried.
The procedure for plastering the ceiling for painting
This process ensures an even coating. To completely get rid of defects, it is advisable to putty the ceiling in a darkened room using a flexible light source. Even an ordinary incandescent lamp is suitable for this. In this case, all irregularities will clearly stand out.
We carry out the procedure in this order:
- If the putty is dry, dilute it in accordance with the instructions and mix thoroughly until a homogeneous mass is formed.
- Apply the first layer of starter compound, spreading a wide spatula to prevent the pit from forming.
- After the coating has dried, apply a second layer using the same technology, but in the perpendicular direction.
- We process the entire ceiling with coarse sanding paper.
- Apply the primer using a roller, saturating the corners with a brush. To improve the effect, we dilute it with white water-dispersion paint.
- After the primer has dried, apply the finishing putty with a wide spatula in two layers.
Provide yourself with free movement by organizing movement on goats or tables. For convenience, it is advisable to carry out work at a height of 15-20 cm from the ceiling, so that the surface to be treated is in the viewing area.
Ceiling sanding technique before applying paint
Preparing the ceiling for painting with acrylic paint or another compound presupposes perfect alignment. That is why it is imperative to sand after the putty. For these purposes, fine-grained sanding paper or a metal bar is optimal. We carry out the work in a circular motion.
After sanding, it is enough to remove excess dust with a vacuum cleaner and apply a finishing primer coat. After it dries, the surface will be completely ready for further finishing.
When grouting, it is important to protect the respiratory system with a respirator and wear safety glasses, as a lot of dust is generated during the process. How to prepare a ceiling for painting - watch the video:
The technology of preparing a ceiling for painting includes many laborious processes. However, the durability of the coating, uniformity and aesthetic appearance depend on the quality of their implementation. All manipulations can be carried out independently, adhering to a certain order of action and taking into account our recommendations.
