Herring and potatoes are a classic Russian hearty snack for any occasion, and especially for a festive feast accompanied by strong alcohol. These products are good both on their own and as an original salad, where they can be transformed beyond recognition. On their basis, we will prepare today a salad with herring, potatoes, eggs and onions. This is a great combination of different flavors of products, boiled potatoes from eggs give tenderness and softness, pickled onions - freshness and light pungency, and salted herring - piquancy and zest. She dressed the salad with vegetable oil, but if you wish, you can pour it with mayonnaise or make an interesting sauce yourself.
The dish is prepared quickly and easily. The process can be repeated by any chef in a matter of minutes. The main ingredient is herring, which can be bought by weight in any store. But inexperienced housewives are sometimes afraid to cook this salad, because the herring needs to be peeled well. However, in order for everything to be done correctly, step-by-step photos will help. Alternatively, you can purchase canned herring, peeled and chopped, at the supermarket. Keep in mind that barreled herring is most often slightly salted, and in a tin or plastic can of spicy salting - with spices. The final taste of the finished dish will depend on the herring chosen.

Ingredients:
- Herring - 1 pc.
- Onions - 1 pc.
- Sugar - 0.5 tsp
- Salt - 1 tsp or to taste
- Vegetable oil - for dressing
- Eggs - 2 pcs.
- Table vinegar - 1 tablespoon
- Potatoes - 2-3 pcs.
Step-by-step preparation of salad with herring, potatoes, eggs and onions, recipe with photo:
1. Peel the onions and chop into thin half rings.
2. Place the onion in a deep bowl, pour in the vinegar and sugar. Stir and pour boiling water over. Leave to marinate until you use the onions in the salad. Stir it several times during this time. Hot water will remove the pungency from it and soften the taste.
3. Wash the potatoes, fill with drinking water, salt and boil in their uniforms until tender. Check the readiness by piercing a long toothpick, it should easily pierce the tubers. Do not use a fork and knife for this purpose, because potatoes may fall apart.
4. Pour the eggs with drinking water and boil for 8-10 minutes until a cool consistency. Transfer to ice water and cool.
5. Peel the herring from the film.
6. Cut off the fins, tail and head. Divide the fish into fillets, removing the ridge and all bones. Wash it under running water, removing the inner black film.
7. Dry the fish with a paper towel and cut into thin slices.
8. Peel the boiled potatoes and cut into slices.
9. Peel the eggs and cut into 4 wedges.
10. Salad can be served in different ways. Served in portions or on one large platter. Put the pickled onions on the selected dish, squeeze them out of moisture with your hands.
11. Top with pieces of herring.
