The holiday on February 14 is more than 16 centuries old. It is named after the priest Valentine, who lived in 269 in the city of Terni. In those days, Emperor Claudius II forbade soldiers to marry. He believed that the family legionnaires fought worse.
Valentine secretly married the soldiers with their brides. Claudius, learning about this, sentenced the priest to death. Sitting in prison, Valentine fell in love with the overseer's blind daughter and healed her. Before his death, he wrote a love letter to the girl, which he signed: "Your Valentine."
The letter was read only after the death of the priest. Subsequently, on February 14, 496, he was canonized as a Christian martyr. Since then, this day has become a holiday for lovers.
