Ceiling-dome, its production from a stretched canvas on a frame and gypsum plasterboard sheets on arched curved profiles. A domed ceiling is one of the room decor options. In an effort to make the interior of the house unique, many turn their attention to this particular type of decoration, since it allows many bold design solutions to be realized. Domes can be made from stretch fabric, plasterboard sheets and other materials. The use of any of them creates an amazing optical effect on the ceiling.

How to make a dome from a stretch canvas on the ceiling

You can make a stretch ceiling in the form of a dome. It looks attractive, but requires a certain amount of free space during installation.

It is worth noting that it is not always possible to make a concave hemisphere so that it is perfectly smooth. Stretch domed ceiling is assembled from separate parts, which are interconnected in one solid figure. When connecting elements, joints inevitably arise, but they are not too noticeable and do not particularly affect the overall picture.

In fact, the dome of the ceiling will be made of a large number of triangular pieces of canvas stretched over a frame. The smaller their size, the smoother the surface of the dome will be. However, a large number of individual elements of such a ceiling will inevitably lead to an increase in the cost of finishing it.

The frame of the dome includes mounting profiles, bent in a special way, on which the parts of the stretch cover are attached. In one part, the profiles are fixed in a circle, forming the lower part of the hemisphere, and their opposite ends are connected at the upper point.

The frame is assembled first, and then the covering details are pulled over it. Installation of a canopy dome is much more difficult than installing a traditional flat stretch ceiling. Therefore, the assembly of such a structure requires experience and professionalism.

The simplest design option is a single-color stretch domed ceiling. It can be white, gray, beige, or some other color. In the catalogs, photos of domes of ceilings with various shades are widely presented. However, the monochromatic design will eventually cease to be attractive, as it can quickly get bored.

A multi-colored dome is a completely different matter. Its fragments, which have several colors, add color to the entire structure. Children's rooms can be designed in the form of a circus tent, or just a bright ceiling can be made.

Domed stretch ceilings decorated with photo printing are very interesting. For example, it can be pictures of a starry sky or blue sky with clouds. The visual volume gives the applied images maximum realism, enhancing the visual experience.

The most important circumstance that must be taken into account without fail is the height of the room to be decorated. With a low location of its overlap, a dome-shaped composition will not be the best choice for ceiling decor.

The low location of the edges of the structure can not only reduce the height of the room, but also limit its area. You may get the feeling that the location of the walls has become very close to each other. In addition, the drawings applied to the canvas using photo printing will not look as impressive at close range as at some distance from the images. Also, with a low ceiling, the structures of the joints of the dome elements can become very noticeable.

Proper lighting is essential. The possibilities of a stretch ceiling dome in terms of luminaire placement are rather limited. They can be placed inside the volumetric shape only in two places: on the side bottom edge or at the top point. Therefore, it is necessary to provide free space around the perimeter of the inner surface of the dome for the installation of additional lighting. Very often, a chandelier is used as a lamp for such a ceiling, fixed on a long suspension to the top point of the structure.

The domed ceiling structure, made of plasterboard sheets, is a rather complex system and is often assembled from factory-made elements.

You can make a simple dome yourself according to the following instructions:

  • In addition to the basic materials, i.e. profiles and gypsum board, workpieces made from an arched profile of the required length and curvature will be required. Before calculating the exact number of elements of the arched profile, you need to draw a sketch of the future structure.
  • First, the base of the dome is assembled, which is a circle. Its diameter must be divided into 24 equal parts. In places of the applied markings, it is required to fix single-level connectors - "crabs".
  • Let us assume that the height of the dome is 0.8 m. Based on this, it is necessary to install the first uncut arc and fix the “crab” connector on it at the top point. The rest of the blanks should be cut and assembled in turn, fixing them from below to the connectors. From above, they are connected with self-tapping screws. When working, it is worth constantly checking the verticality of the arcs, otherwise the correct shape of the dome will not work.
  • Then the drywall is attached to the frame. Dome blanks must have significant curvature. Therefore, it is easier to veneer the frame of gypsum board t. 8 mm, soaking it in two steps. Drywall is easier to bend along the length of the sheet. Therefore, it is more convenient to cut dome blanks in the longitudinal direction and monitor their width, which should not be more than 25 cm.
  • The first facing blank will be a circle about 40 cm in diameter and cut in two. The rest of the elements will look like chamomile petals. It is more convenient to do the final trimming of parts when they are fixed to the frame and well moistened.
  • To create a “domed” shape, it is recommended to press wet fragments of gypsum board to the frame for a while with any improvised washers that can be cut from the hangers for profiles. After the blanks have dried, they must be attached to the frame with self-tapping screws.
  • The plasterboard dome ceiling is finished using the usual technology developed for such structures.
