Do you want your favorite hobby to bring income as well? Then learn how to make roses from satin ribbons, and then create bouquets, topiary from them. Satin ribbon is a wonderful material for creativity. Using the kanzashi technique, you can make a swan, flowers, topiary from this material.
The art of kanzashi originated in Japan. They say that it owes its appearance to the geisha. They decorated their hairstyles with fresh flowers, but those quickly faded. Then the girls came up with the idea of using ribbons for these purposes, which were twisted in a special way.
Now, not only flowers are made of this material, but also many other charming things, for example, a swan. But to create this graceful bird, first familiarize yourself with the technique of rolling up pieces of ribbons to turn them into petals. After all, our swan will be pasted over with just such blanks.
Satin Ribbon Kanzashi Petals
Start by preparing the essentials. You must have:
- satin ribbon;
- pin;
- tweezers;
- lighter.
First, let's learn how to make round petals. Cut the ribbon into 5x5 cm squares. Take the first one, fold it diagonally, and then clamp it with tweezers on the left side.
Now put 2 opposite corners of the triangle on the third one, which is at the bottom.
To make the round petals further, turn the workpiece the other side and lay 2 new opposite corners towards each other. Their junction can be soldered with a lighter flame, or simply sewn together.
A burning candle can be used instead of a lighter. Also, to connect the elements, they are sometimes glued together with nail polish.
Now bend the workpiece in half, pin it in this position with a pin.
Singe the bottom edges to join them together. During the final procedure for creating a round petal, hold the workpiece with tweezers, holding its edge until it cools.

If you want to make a flower from ribbons, then make several of these petals, sew them together and this is what you get on the seamy side and on the front side.
And here is how sharp kanzashi petals are made. After cutting a 5 x 5 cm square, fold one and then a second time diagonally in half. Holding the tweezers closer to the edge, trim off the frizzy parts and solder those edges over the flame.
Now cut the raw corner off the workpiece and solder in this place with a flame.
By studying how sharp and round petals are made, you can make flowers from satin ribbons. For beginners, mastering kanzashi begins precisely with the creation of such simple petals and flowers. Here's what a spectacular product you will get.
You can decorate a postcard with such a flower, and if you pin a pin on the back side, then you will turn it into a brooch.
How is a swan made from ribbons?
You will craft such a proud white-winged bird using the skills obtained above and the following materials:
- pliers "nippers";
- glue;
- wire;
- scissors;
- lighter;
- a thread.
To make a swan frame, twist the wire as shown in the photo. And, starting at the top, wrap the frame with white thread to the bottom of the neck. Roll it around your head thicker.
If you want to make a swan of a different tone with your own hands, then take a thread of the corresponding color. The ribbon must be the same color. To shape the bird's beak, wrap a narrow red ribbon around its nose. And for the eyes, use 2 squares of black satin, folded into petals. Glue the eyes into place.
Now make a round petal from a white square, glue it on the bird's forehead, and next to it, on one side and the other, 2 smaller round petals. In the same way, glue the head and neck of the graceful bird further.
When you reach the torso, finish this part of the work and start making his wings.
To do this, roll 2 wires as shown in the photographs and wrap them with thread of the same color that you used to decorate the head, neck, torso.
To make the swan further, glue the wing blanks with sharp petals turned to the opposite side.
Attach the free ends of the bird's wings to its body and glue its back with sharp petals. To complete the tail, glue them in this place in a checkerboard pattern in 3 rows.

Bouquets of satin ribbons
Unlike fresh flowers, these will not fade and will delight for a long time. They can be presented to a person for any special occasion, and the bride will be even more beautiful with a wedding bouquet made using the kanzashi technique. For the newlywed, they are made in light colors. You can use white, pink, blue ribbons. You also need to work:
- white organza;
- beads;
- textile glue;
- pins;
- wooden stick;
- newspaper;
- twine;
- needle with thread;
- pencil;
- scissors;
- ruler.
First, we will make a circle, to which you will then attach the flowers. Give this shape to one or more newspapers by creasing. Then wrap the twine around them. On the one hand, between the wound threads, make a hole, pour glue there and insert a wooden stick.
While the base is drying, read on how to make satin ribbon roses and start doing this part of the enjoyable job. For the first type of flowers, only a 2, 5 cm wide ribbon and pins are needed.
Bend the corner of the ribbon towards you and start twisting the core of the flower. You can fix it with glue or by sewing with a needle and thread. Continue twisting the tape further. When the top folded corner becomes small, make 1 turn of the tape back and continue twisting, remembering to fix the curls with glue or thread.
When the top corner is small, turn the tape over again. In this way, craft the rose to the end. When the satin ribbon runs out, sew the inside of the flower with a needle and thread. But how to make a rose in a different way: cut out a circle 4 cm in diameter from dense fabric. Determine its center, draw 2 identical segments from it to the arc of the circle. Cut out this corner. Sew the 2 cut sides of the circle together to create a short fabric cone.
Such a flower is good because it can be created even from narrow stripes. Such roses are used to decorate not only bouquets, they are used to make brooches, decorate hair bands.
Place the edge of the tape on this cone and sew to it. Lay the tape on top, then fold it back so that 2 triangles lie on half of the square. Moreover, their larger side is located on the diagonal of this square.
Take the next turn so that the large side of the new triangle lies snug against the second diagonal. Thus, making turns and sewing them to the fabric, as shown in the photo, complete the entire cone.
Make some more flowers. You will end up with ribbon roses like this one.
Sew both flowers to a round base of newspaper and thread. Fill small gaps between them with beads, and large ones with organza flowers. For the latter, fold a strip of this material 8 cm wide and 50 cm long, fold in half. You have got a tape 4 cm wide. Piercing both its edges along the length with a needle, gather on a thread, tighten, tie a knot. Sew these airy chrysanthemums between the roses with the same thread.

DIY topiary from satin ribbons
Roses from satin ribbons will also help to create it. This kind of creative work looks great on the desktop, adding a touch of comfort to it. The bouquet will decorate your home and will be a great gift. And if you like the kanzashi technique, it will turn out well, it can become your profitable business. You can negotiate with flower shops, supply them with these things, or sell them online.
But first you need to master this handicraft and "fill your hand". To make a topiary, you must have:
- satin ribbons in two colors;
- glass or flower pot;
- silver fabric;
- white tape;
- wooden stick;
- alabaster;
- tennis ball;
- synthetic winterizer;
- awl;
- decorative material.
Poke a hole in the ball with an awl and insert a wooden stick into it.
Add water to the alabaster, stir, you should get a solution similar in consistency to sour cream. Pour it into a glass, pot, or other suitable container and place a stick in the center.
While the solution is solidifying, we will make flowers from ribbons. To do this, take a tape 2.5–4 cm wide, fold back its corner, start twisting the rose.
Continue further tinkering with the flower, periodically tucking the edges of the ribbon back.
To prevent the elements of the rose from untwisting, sew them with a needle and thread. Do this so that the threads are not visible on the front of the flower.
Sew the remaining free edge to the already lush blooming bud.
In the same way, you need to make the rest of the roses from satin ribbons.
Next, you need to make leaves using the kanzashi technique. To do this, cut a small strip from the tape to form a rectangle. Bring the two top edges down, sew everything together here with a thread and a needle. Now connect the 2 bottom corners, also fix them with a thread. Turn the resulting petal over and sew it to the rose.
Attach 1-2 petals to each flower.
To make the topiary further, you need to make several decorative balls. Cut the silver fabric into small squares, put in the center of each a ball twisted from padding polyester, tie them with a thread.
Make 12 of these balls or as many as you need to decorate the topiary.
By this time, the alabaster has dried up, so you can start decorating the topiary. Glue roses to a tennis ball, and between them - silver balls.
Now you need to decorate the stand. To do this, cut out a circle of such a size from a silver fabric so that it completely covers the bottom, sides of the container and wraps inward. Attach the circle to the container, wrap the edges. Making punctures at a distance of 3 cm from each other, sew the fabric to the pot. For more effect and to hide the stitches, pin circles here made of thick, non-wrinkled fabric (for example, fleece) or thin imitation leather. Place a bead in the center and thus decorate the ribbon topiary.
