Requirements for adhesives for parquet, types of compositions for fixing planks, choice of means for working with different types of flooring material. Parquet glue is a composition for fixing wooden planks to the floor base, ensuring long-term operation of the coating. We will talk about the choice of means for fixing parquet flooring in this article.

Types of parquet adhesives

Depending on the composition of the product, water-dispersed, solvent-based and two-component products are distinguished. Each is used with a specific building material and provides quality coverage in a variety of conditions.

Dispersion adhesive

The substance is made on the basis of an aqueous dispersion of PVA or acrylic, to which synthetic resins are added. The mixture does not contain solvents and hazardous volatile elements, therefore it is environmentally friendly and is especially popular among consumers in European countries.

The tool is intended for fixing waterproof plywood (substrate) to the base, as well as for fixing moisture-resistant wood planks. Only oak and larch have such properties. The solution holds small piece elements well.

It is not recommended to glue sawn timber from fruit trees, beech and alder, they swell quickly under the influence of water.

The quality of water-based parquet glue depends on the percentage of moisture in its composition, the higher the value, the cheaper the mixture.

Solvent based adhesive

Such products contain a very small percentage of water and are used to fix plates from any wood. They are used in cases where water-dispersed mixtures are contraindicated, for fixing planks made of wood, which is afraid of moisture. Substances based on solvents from different manufacturers practically do not differ in quality and cost approximately the same.

The solidification process is accompanied by the evaporation of volatile elements that are harmful to the human body. After complete hardening, the release of toxins ceases. The mixture does not set for more than 15 minutes, which is convenient for installation work. During this time, you can correct the position of the planks. Maximum strength occurs 5 days after laying.

Solvent fluids are explosive and flammable and should be handled with care. It is forbidden to work near an open fire, as well as to smoke in the room where the flooring is being installed. It is necessary to organize constant ventilation in the room.

There are two types of solvent-based adhesives - oil-based (rubber) and alcohol-based. The first type includes liquids that can be diluted with acetone, white spirit, solvent, etc. The second type is made on an alcohol basis.

Solutions Aned A1 and Ancerkol 5-10-15-20 are universal adhesives for oil-based parquet flooring, they stand out for their strength and elasticity, as well as for an acceptable price. They retain their characteristics well in the cold. If the temperature and humidity in the room reached the maximum permissible values, very small gaps formed between the floorboards - up to 0.8 mm. The product can be applied without preliminary priming of the base.

The work is carried out using a significant amount of solvent with a very unpleasant odor. To protect against toxic fumes, the flooring is installed in respirators. After the mixture dries, substances harmful to humans cease to be released.

There are some restrictions on the applicability of this tool. If the floor is underfloor heating, the mortar layer evaporates quickly and after 5 years the floorboards will wobble. With strong heating of the surface, the substance can completely disappear.

The Artelit RB-112 rubber parquet adhesive is produced by the Polish company Selena. Its main purpose is to adhere topcoats and plywood, but it has worked well with all materials. Has excellent initial tack and excellent adhesive properties.

Compared to other similar products, it has a significant advantage - it has successfully passed the toxicity test in Ukraine. Manufacturers assure that it is not necessary to prime the base, however, for reliability, the substrate is impregnated with a special agent Artelit WB-222 or Artelit SB-212.

Alcohol-based adhesives are intended for installation of planks of all types of wood on a substrate that absorbs moisture. They contain a minimum amount of water. The product hardens after 72 hours, the flooring can be sanded after a week. After drying, the solution layer shrinks. The smell of alcohol solvent is not much weaker than petroleum, but less irritating. It is believed that this is the only tool that can securely fix even a massive board.

The disadvantage is the high price, which is why the substance is rarely used. The quality is strongly influenced by the shelf life of the product. If the item was made more than a year ago, do not buy it. Of the alcoholic substances, the most reliable is Utsin MK-73.

Polyurethane adhesives

There are two large groups of polyurethane products that consumers are willing to buy - one-component and two-component.

One-piece are designed to work with all types of block and mosaic parquet of any size. Curing occurs as a result of the reaction of the contents with moisture in the air. They are often used for assembling a finished prefabricated coating, because mixtures do not destroy the protective and decorative layer.

After drying, they retain their elastic properties and do not shrink. They are used when installing the flooring on a concrete floor. Of the shortcomings, it is possible to note a long solidification period - up to 4 days. Usually, the substrate is not primed before handling such a substance.

Of the one-component parquet adhesives, Artelit HB-820 is popular, it has a rather low price. The downside of the low cost is expressed in the extra time spent during installation work. The substance has relatively low elasticity, low stickiness, weak initial adhesion. For example, after applying glue, the die should be pushed around the solution a little, and then pressed firmly.

For consumers who do not know which glue to choose for parquet, we suggest paying attention to TenaBond 141M universal mortar. There are practically no restrictions on the use of this substance. It can fix plywood and floorboards to concrete, metal with any coating, synthetic materials. It is recommended to use this tool for fastening wide floorboards (up to 130 mm). The price of the product is not much higher than for Artelit HB-820, and the consumption does not exceed 1 kg per m22.

For critical objects, it is recommended to use Kilto Flex Silan polyurethane parquet adhesive. It securely fixes even large oiled and varnished items. It is used for gripping a plywood base intended for laying solid boards with a width of more than 130 mm. The product expands well and does not crack even when the coating size is increased above the standard, for example, after a strong wetting of the wood. After a while, it regains its size.

The disadvantages include the high cost of the product, as well as the release of toxic fumes during solidification. After about 24 hours, the mixture is safe for humans.

Two-component products are considered the best adhesives for parquet flooring. They are sold in buckets. The container contains the base, the lid contains a powder of a certain composition. To obtain a solution, the dry component is poured into an emulsion and mixed thoroughly, after which a chemical solidification reaction begins. The mixture dries completely in a day.

The substance is many times stronger than other mixtures. It can be used to attach materials to any kind of substrate - wood, concrete, metal. The bond strength is not affected by the type of wood and the size of the sample.

Glue Uzin MK 92S is considered the most reliable and durable in the world, which is confirmed by many years of operating experience. It quickly adheres boards of any size to a variety of substrates. When installing, it is recommended to use another solution with it, which hardens more slowly. This is due to the fact that during long-term production of the extreme cut dies, the product may harden, and the installation of parquet near the walls will be of poor quality. The disadvantages of the tool include toxicity.

Two-component glue for parquet Uzin MK 92S is made of two ingredients supplied in the kit, one of which is very toxic. Skin contact causes severe pain, therefore protective gloves are sold with the product. Chemical burn marks on the affected skin disappear after three weeks. The mixture remains dangerous throughout the entire installation process, but then it loses its aggressiveness. When they talk about the environmental friendliness of Uzin MK 92S, they mean its state after hardening.

In the latest development Uzin MK 92+ took into account the wishes of consumers and increased the curing time, which allows you to get a beautiful coating in high temperature conditions.

For laying flooring elements, buy mortars with the following properties:

  • Parquet adhesive must securely fix the coating for a long time, because the wooden surface has not deteriorated for more than 50 years.
  • Once cured, the product retains its elasticity, which allows the floorboards to expand freely with changes in humidity and temperature.
  • The substance does not shrink over time, which leads to subsidence of the flooring and the appearance of a squeak.
  • The water content in the solution should be kept to a minimum to avoid swelling and deformation of the dies. A composition with a large amount of liquid cannot fix planks from exotic woods, which are rich in essential oils.
  • The product should not contain elements harmful to humans, released during the operation of the coating.

Criteria for choosing parquet adhesive

When choosing an adhesive solution, many factors are taken into account - the type of planks, their dimensions and characteristics, the type of base and its properties, etc. To choose the right product for the base-substrate and parquet-substrate pairs, follow our recommendations.

We suggest that you familiarize yourself with the features of the choice of solutions for some materials:

  1. If you do not know which adhesive for parquet and backing is best, buy a substance with high adhesion to lumber and cement.
  2. After drying, a strong elastic layer should remain, which dampens the stresses between the two materials.
  3. Lower requirements are imposed on the connection of plywood to concrete, if the material is additionally secured with self-tapping screws. In this case, the fasteners will hold the shape of the web, and the glue will only fix the material in a stationary state. You can use a water-based substance that costs much less than comparable floor formulations.
  4. Single-piece oak or ash elements less than 70x420 mm in size without stable wood coating are glued to the plywood with dispersion glue.
  5. High quality pre-finished hardwood parquet (oak or ash) is recommended to be laid on plywood with one- or two-component polyurethane adhesives. Such compositions allow avoiding wood warping, which cannot be eliminated on already painted samples.
  6. The fully varnished plates are glued with the agent having the highest peel strength. Before work, it is necessary to conduct a test - fix the bar on the glue and, after drying, try to tear it off. The lacquer coating must not peel off after applying a load.
  7. Uncoated piece pieces that absorb water well (from fruit species, maple, beech) are attached to the plywood with a minimum amount of water.
  8. Wide planks with a locking system of connection are afraid of moisture. Under the influence of water, dimensional lumber noticeably warps. The glue for such elements should retain elasticity after hardening, which makes it possible to reduce stress in long samples. Also, the composition must have sufficient strength to reliably fix the coating.
  9. Solid boards up to 120 mm wide are glued to plywood with products that create an elastic layer of high strength and withstand the expansion of the lumber. It is forbidden to fix large elements with water-dispersion solutions.
  10. Wide specimens (more than 120 mm) are fixed with compounds that have good resistance to vertical separation. This is due to the fact that in the connection of parquet flooring with the substrate, much higher stresses arise than in other cases. The elasticity of the adhesive for wide boards is irrelevant.
  11. In the case of gluing wide dies (from 120 mm) to a fragile cement screed, it is necessary to use a compound with high adhesion properties. In this way, high adhesion to the base at the molecular level is ensured.
  12. If the boards are more than 120 mm wide and you plan to mount them on a solid base, use Adesiv two-component adhesive, which has a high level of strength. A more expensive option would be to lay the material on a woven material (multimolar), which forms an intermediate layer between the screed and the flooring and relieves stress between them. In this case, you will need 2 times more glue, because multimol is also laid on glue.
  13. Large-format boards from 120 m are glued to a solid cement base with polyurethane compounds. The connection is obtained elastic, having a high peel strength.
  14. For fixing industrial parquet, you can use any type of glue that is suitable for a specific type of coating. The main selection criterion is the strength and elasticity of the joint.
