With the correct installation of the chimney in the bath, combustion products will be efficiently removed outside, and you can save on fuel. Choose the best design option and install it yourself, guided by the recommendations below. Content:

Stoves in the bath are electric, gas or solid fuel. The first option does not involve installing a chimney. But in the last two cases, it is worth thinking about the installation of this structure. The outlet of the exhaust gas to the outside, the speed of warming up the room, fuel consumption, and fire safety depend on this.

Chimney types

These structures are classified according to the material of manufacture and the type of installation. On the first basis, there are:

  1. Brick chimney for a bath. The process of its installation is more time consuming, but the structure is distinguished by a relatively high strength and durability. The disadvantages include the unevenness of the inner walls. Because of this, the brick chimney has to be cleaned more often.
  2. Ceramic … It is popular among builders due to its convenient and quick assembly. For such a design, it is not necessary to make a fire cut in the floor. A feature of the installation is the need for an additional foundation. The best option for solid fuel boilers.
  3. Asbestos-cement chimneys for a bath. They are characterized by ease of use and ease of installation. They have high weather-resistant and fire-resistant properties. The disadvantages include toxicity when heated and the need for additional thermal insulation.
  4. Metal … The main advantages are ease of installation and relative cheapness of materials. However, when installing it, special attention must be paid to thermal insulation and to exclude the possibility of condensation on the inner walls.
  5. Sandwich Chimneys for a bath. A high rate of thermal insulation, reliability and ease of installation are the main characteristics of this structure. The market offers many factory-made models, but making it yourself is also not difficult.

General recommendations for installing a chimney in a bath

As for the method of installing a chimney in a bath, there are two types:

  • Internal … They are distinguished by ease of maintenance, good traction, heat saving. They do not need additional insulation. However, such models are considered fire hazardous and, if a crack occurs in the pipe, they can smoke the entire room.
  • External … Suitable for small saunas. Less fire hazardous. The disadvantages include the need for insulation and a relatively high fuel consumption.

Improper construction can cause poor heating of the bath, as well as lead to fire and accumulation of carbon monoxide in the room. Before installing a chimney in a bath, pay attention to the study of general recommendations:

  1. The section of the pipe and its diameter are selected in accordance with the indicator specified in the stove's passport. Otherwise, the exhaust gases will either enter the room or be discharged too quickly and will not heat the steam room. The optimal shape of the chimney is considered to be cylindrical. It removes combustion products as efficiently as possible.
  2. We mount the pipe near the inner wall. This will create reliable thermal insulation.
  3. We take into account that the length of the entire structure should be more than 4.5 meters, and the length of the horizontal sections should be less than one meter. Otherwise, waste will accumulate in one place.
  4. We install a reduction adapter if the diameter of the outlet hole on the boiler and chimney does not match.
  5. If a brick chimney is being built for a gas boiler, then we must mount a sleeve inside it. Without it, the brick will be exposed to acids.
  6. We observe the technical clearance between the chimney and the masonry.
  7. We equip the structure with a gate to adjust the traction intensity.
  8. We mount the pipe at least 50 cm from the roof ridge. At a height of 1.5 meters, we install braces with a fastening bracket.
  9. We increase the thickness of each chimney wall at the joints with the ceiling by 5 cm or more. This will increase the level of protection against spontaneous combustion.
  10. We insulate the walls and ceiling around the structure with additional layers of copper or foil-clad material. Basalt wool is also suitable for this. But the use of zinc sheets is unacceptable. They are toxic when heated.

Consider installing a metal chimney in stages. To get started, purchase the materials you need. In our case, you will need:

  • Identical stainless bends (16/10 cm) - 3 pcs. (about 350 rubles apiece);
  • Galvanized elbows (one - 120/20 cm, two - 120/16 cm each) - 3 pcs. (from 150 rubles apiece);
  • Tees with plug (16 cm) - 3 pcs. (from 310 rubles apiece);
  • Fungus (20 cm) - 3 pcs. (about 50 rubles);
  • Gate - 1 pc. (about 500 rubles).

When installing the chimney, it is important to strictly follow the instructions and perform the work in stages:

  1. We fix chimneys with self-tapping screws.
  2. We make a recess in the tile - about 16 cm. We remove part of the roof insulation in the area of 15 cm from the hole.
  3. We tie the protruding pipe segment with an asbestos cord with a layer of 16 cm. You can also use basalt wool.
  4. We put on a pipe with a diameter of 20 cm upstairs, mount it firmly and cover it with a reinforcing material. Bituminous mastic is ideal.
  5. We fill the resulting space between the pipes with an asbestos cord. For this we make a winding.
  6. We install a fungus to protect against precipitation.

Waterproofing when installing a chimney in a bath

Be sure to waterproof the pipe-roof joint:

  • For the internal chimney, we create a mesh casing around the pipe. It can then be used for laying sauna stones.
  • We wrap the outer pipe with a fireproof, environmentally friendly and heat-insulating layer.
  • We smooth the walls of the structure for the smooth removal of soot. This allows the pipes to be cleaned less frequently.
  • We plaster and whitewash the internal brick chimney. The whitewash will turn black where smoke breaks through.

After installation, heat the sauna stove. Use aspen wood to improve traction. In the future, special attention must be paid to cleaning the chimney. It is best done after rain.
