On the eve of the holidays, each hostess strives to make a rich table with a wide variety of salads, snacks and other goodies. Many people prefer herring. But after all, it can be served in different ways, and it is not necessary to always stick to the usual classic option: cut the fish fillet and mix it with pickled onions. For example, herring snack rolls will certainly quickly disappear from the festive table. This is a spicy, tender and tasty appetizer that will delight all herring lovers. She is perfect for an event, her presence will decorate any table and will make a great impression on the guests.

I made these rolls stuffed with melted cheese. But you can use any other foods like pickled onions, apples, beets with carrots, and more. However, I think that few people do not like herring, so everyone will definitely like this appetizer.

Ingredients:

  • Herring - 1 pc.
  • Sugar - 1 tsp
  • Onions - 0.5 pcs.
  • Processed cheese - 100 g
  • Apple - 0.5 pcs.
  • Black or white bread - a few pieces
  • Table vinegar 9% - 1 tablespoon

Step-by-step recipe for making herring rolls:

1. Peel the onions, wash and cut into half rings. Put in a container, pour in vinegar and add sugar. Pour in warm water, stir and leave to marinate for 15-20 minutes.

2. Peel the herring from a thin film, cut off the head, fins and tail. Gently halve the fillets and remove the ridge. Use tweezers or your hands to remove all the bones. Rinse the fish under running water and remove the inner black film. Blot the finished fillet with a paper towel.

3. Place the herring on a board and cover it with cling film. Use a kitchen hammer to beat it off so that it is even thick on all sides.

4. The fillet should be about 3-5 mm thick.

5. Remember the processed cheese with a fork or grate on a medium grater. Although you can cut it into thin slices.

6. Connect two fillets of herring together, overlapping each other in the form of a rectangle. Apply cream cheese in an even layer on top.

7. Put the pickled onion on the cheese, squeeze it well from the marinade and excess moisture. Top, in the center, put the apple cut into thin strips.

8. Gently roll the herring into a roll and wrap it with cling film. Send the appetizer to cool in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours, or better leave it overnight. The roll should be well formed and take shape.

9. To beautifully serve the appetizer on the table, cut out circles of about the same diameter with the herring from the bread. To do this, use a special serving ring or take any round shape like a glass, shot glass or cookie cutters.

10. You should have nice circles of bread. Instead of black bread, you can use a baguette that you don't have to cut at all or a regular white loaf.

11. Carefully cut the herring roll into rings about 1 cm thick. I recommend doing this in plastic, and then remove the bag from the pieces. So the roll will hold on better.

12. Place herring rolls on the bread and garnish with fresh herbs before serving.
