Research on HMB began almost immediately after the discovery of this substance. HMB has been shown to conserve nitrogen in animal experiments. To date, scientists have not been able to fully reveal all the secrets of the mechanisms of HMB effect on the body. The most popular is the theory of Dr. Nissen.

According to her, HMB can act as a precursor for the immune system and muscles, while having the ability to quickly restore damaged cellular structures. As a result, after the restoration of muscle tissue cells, the processes of synthesis of protein compounds are immediately activated.

There is also a second hypothesis, suggesting that the substance has the ability to maintain a reduced turnover of protein compounds in muscle tissues, protecting them from damage. This helps to accelerate the innervation of the fibers, ensuring their rapid growth.

During all experiments with HMB, the drug was taken in the amount of three grams several times during the day. In only one study, this dose was increased and as a result better results were recorded. This may indicate that efficacy can be increased by increasing the dose of HMB.

Similar results were obtained in studies using dosages of 1.5 and 3 grams. The best results were obtained by subjects taking three grams of HMB. At the same time, this amount of the drug will probably not be as effective for experienced athletes with long training experience. In such cases, optimal doses should be in the order of 5-6 grams. But it all comes down to the rather high cost of beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate.

In many ways, the effectiveness of any drug depends on the scheme of its use. Good results were obtained with one gram of HMB three times a day and an additional two grams after training in combination with a gainer. This is due to an increase in the rate of delivery of the active component to the tissues, due to the high level of insulin. This is the so-called loading phase, which lasts one week. After that, you can switch to the use of three grams of HMB per day. This is best done every six weeks.

HMB can be combined with vitamin C to accelerate recovery. You only need one gram of each of these substances to do this. You can use the substance in a cyclic scheme. After 1–1.5 months of use, a two-week pause should be made.
